Mr. Blair's educational appropriation bill
was discussed nearly all the week. Senators
Brown, Hampton, Colquitt, Lamar, George
and others spoke in favor of the bill. Sena
tor Colquitt's bill to refund to Georgia the
(22,000 expended by her in the Indian war
was passed, with a proviso preventing said
amount from lielng credited on the land tax
alleged to be due from Georgia to the general
government.
Senator Brown introduced a bill to refund
(36,000 to the state of Georgia.
In tbe house a bill war passed making it _
felony for any person to falsely and fraudu
iently assume to be an officer, agent or em
ploye of tbe United States govorument.
The president has sent a message to can-
' gress recommending appropriations for the
construction of three cruisers and four gun
boats, to coat (426,600. The president inti
mates that delay iu this matter would be im
prudent.
Mr. Bflle, of Louisiana, asked permission
to introduce a joint resolution setting forth
tbe imminent danger of an oveiflow. and ap
propriating (300,000 for relief. Mr. Dunn, of
Aekanuu, called attention So tbe fact that in
bis district the Mississippi was ninety miles
wide, and 70,000 people had been driven
from their homes. Mr. Oates, of Alabama,
doubted the constitutionality of the resolu
tlon, and it was Inst, but by unanimous con
sent was reintroduced and referred to the
committee on appropriations.
