During the time I was five separate timea engiged with the enemy and have once been a prisoner of war, escaping in the darkness of the night. Daring the night of the 18th the enemy, near or quite four hundred strong under Gen' oral Kilpatrick, Sherman's chief of cavalrys attacked and drove in our extreme left pick eta, continued the advance, driving every' thing before them until they came near the West Point railroad where by a rapid move and parallel vroad our brigade, (Ross's, Gen era! Jackson's division of cavalry) or at least a part of them, took position on the railroad and fired volloy after volley Into the enemy as they crossed tbe road, after which we again doubled quick time until we again gained their front, v hen we continued fighting and failing back towards Jonesboro on the Macon mid Western railroad until we got to the head waters of Pilot river about three miles from town, where we made sstanil for two hours or more, during which conslderanle skirmishing anil mi tillary firing took place, wo losing a lew men killed and wounded, eneiny'a loss unknown. We were compelled to fall back into the town, wher the enemy aoon bad a batery planted upon an eminence near the depot and commenced shelling the town. General It ns, who had only four hundred ell. c i men, ordered us to withdraw, which 1 ac knowledge was done with an Indecorous and unnecessary haste and some confusion, but which was caused by our homes, exposure to bunting shells, and to an errontotia idea that we Were bring IIsilked on the left. One citir.eis, a (Mr, Gbristian] was killed. We retreated down the railroad, one mile, met a train with a brigade of infantry oil hood, halt 'd, camped ter tbe night winch was now upon us, at (lie house of a Mr (lump. Daring the night thek7th Texas being on picket duty, continued a desultory light with unimportant results. The enemy's and our pickets stood near midway between otlr camp and Jonesboro hotel. At daylight our hrt gatle and General Reynolds's infantry marched in line of battle Into town, found the tueniy had gone on the Decatur road We then mounted, while the infantry, march ed to novejoy station and took position. We overlook them at bee's mill, fought for two or three hours with our (third Texas reg) killing lllteen or twenty. 'They retreated Inn wo again overtook them on lira McDonough mail, where we all dismounted and formed behind a fence in an o.herwiseopnn aud bold lipid about half way up a long and gradual eminence, the enemy being on the lop and over it in the hollow beyond. Onr horses Wcrs six or seven hundred yards in the rear, in slid hear lira McDonough road and be tween us and them was a cornfield slid an open oue, in the latter of wh toh we were post ed. We were soon ordered to charge the enemy across tbe open field anil take tint fenoerall works upon the eminence. Our regiment ou the lett and the Ninth Texas on loir center charged, took the works driving the enemy to stronger works beyond, an forint tl of fenoerails. Assoon aswereached tint first works the enemy oponed upon us will: grsiH'sbot from the second work, not two hundred yards distant. We were ordered to fail back behind our first and only enlreuoh incut. By this time our auimuultlou was marly exhausted, and the brigade hail not in fine over three iiuudredand fifty orfourlttiu- ???drctl men. We, however, formed at right tha brigade trussing it, with our one piece of cannon on the right. During our lighting the main body of the enemy (all cavalry) It ail gone ou to ti e station where they unexpect, edly run into General Reynold's-brigade of infantry anil were repulsed. The euetiiy be hind the crest of the hill formed into .three caimans, charged our little command at full run, some with drawn aabrea. and soma with pls'ols. We fired until the dllfiirent colonels, awing WO were out numbered about ten to one, Ordered a retreat to the woods In our rear. Our lieutenant of artillery, Voting, of (luluuibiis, Georgia, knowing It was it to retreat, fired Ida piece until lira list charge was m his osuuon, when he fotiud It cracked, tone- r l>a. dotted it, his men all gotto before, This was a grand sight, hut too terrible to Withstand. .Everything, enemy, four ibons ami horsemen, our uwn men, stampeding hones, and our lone place cl artillery all were ill sight in one extended opening.
