Lykchburo, April 11.???After everything
had been got in readiness at 1???ocabontas
yesterday evening, the police force was
placed on guard at the main entrance of the
mines In order to keep back the crowd which
had been attracted by the notice posted by
Superintendent Lathrop, annoucing that the
bodies could be reclaimed, and then the
mining engineer in charge of the reacuing
party entered the mine, to note the aitnation
of aflain. When the party emerged from the
mines it waa announced to tbe assembled
crowd that tbe damage was less than bad
been supposed, and that little trouble would
be experienced in recovering the bodies of
the victims.
Two bodies were recovered yesterday in
horribly mutilated condition, those of Boon
Maxey, a white boy, and Jim Crim, a negro.
Tbe work of recovery was then postponed
until this morning, when It waa resumed
under the direcdou of Engineer Moody, A
still larger crowd than that of tbe day pre
vious congregated at the entrance, and ropes
had to be stretched around to prevent too
near an approach the to entrance. Trie crowd,
however, observed proper decorum and,'no un-
due|excltsment was inanlfeated, a spirit of
greatsolemnisition seeming)to^pervade the as
aemblage. The bodies, as they were recover
ed, were placed in boxes on the inside of thn
mine, and several of them were brought out
together on scar.
A number of miners well acquainted with
the victims were placed at the entrance for
the purpose of identifying tbe bodies if possi*
hie, but of sixteen recovered so far only six
bare been identified. These are Jim Crim,
Ialiam Maxwell, George Maxwell, Wm. Shi-
gher, Young Jewell and a German, who was
recognised by his wife. Many of
tbe bodies are horribly manxled. Some
with tbe heads blown oil; others with arms
and less torn from their sockets, and ether
frightful mutilations An arm and a leg were
found in the main entrance, but the body to
which they belonged could not be found. A
thrill of horror passed through the crowd of
spectators in front of the mines as tbe rescu
ing party brought out the charred remains of
a miner with his dinner bucket clasped in his
arms, lie was probably just partaking of his
dinner when tbe explosion hurled him Into
eternity. Beveral miners were found with
picks in hand, and the position of these
bodies indicates that death waa instantanoous
In tbe mines
At 3:30 o???clock tbo announcement was
made that no more bodies would be removed
before M o'clock Saturday morning. The
remainder of the day was occupied
......... being too heavy to be dragged out, had
to be quartered and taken out. Very little
excitement prevailed at the mine at any lime
during the day. A large crowd of men and
women stood near the entrance, hoping hy
some familiar feature to recognise the n-
maina of dead relatives, but as soon as the
announcement was luado that no mure bod lea
would ba taken out until Saturday the crowd
qulet-y withdrew. All of the identifications
today were by clothing or articles in the peck,
els. The bodies were not in any case rec *g-
nixsbleol themselves.
Goumaos 0.. April 11.???An engine and

oars being turned over. The engineer was
killed. Tne llreman was fatally, and the
baggage master and postal clerk were badly
Injured. None of the passengers were badly
Injured. A broken rail caused the accident.
The cause of tbe accideut is said to liave
been the removal of a rail by train robbers.
They made no attack on the train. The p ?????
sengers all escaped injury. Tne fireman and
baggage master are supposed to be fatally
injured. The express mesaeuger was badly
hurt.

a theory which I think oxplalnt the prevalence of
hydrophobia It is well known that marriage be
tween perrons who aro closely related eanics the
offspring to become lussno. Perhaps animals are
similarly affected. By exercising proper care In
the breeding ot dogs and other animals, it Is pots!
