G THE WEEKLY C0NBT1TU'llON: TUESDAY. MAY G 1884 TWELVE PAC3EB. AROUND THE CAMPFIRE. ???larlaa *f Battle*. If .rebel and tlir pin, Incident??? of battli, or in nut fall ubi and addiwa la wb.t ,01 Oixnt Won nr Accidbkt ???I carried a gun iu Ilowles' battilion. We were mounted in f.ntrj, and a part of of General John Moigan???i command from Kentucky. The yankeea called us Morgan?????? horse thieves, while the inhabitants of the mountain districtsof East Tennessee would aak, when they met a squad of us is a bridle path: ???Doesyouena belong to Milter Morgan???s critter-back company?' In the spring of 'G-l Morgan'i command bad just come up from South Carolina, and lied gone into camp at Abingdon, Va , when word came that General Crook, the present Indian fighting hero, with General Averill, was moving with a heavy force on Wytheville. We took up our line of march tor that town, and right well do I remember the happy faces of the old men, the women and chit dren who lined the curbstones of the princi pal streets as wc rode our horses by fours in triumphal entry style before the admiring gaze of these bou-combatanta. There were no able-bodied men in southern towns in those days. On the opposite side of the town, in a beautiful woodland puture, we went Into camp. Most of our hotsee were turned loose to graze while the men were busy building dog houses to sleep in, orbunt ing wood amt water. A sudden change came over the camp. The clear notes of a bugle rang out the familiar but now ominonsorder, 'Saddle up your bones." Nearly 300 men shouting, ilKi ???antly t. "Saddle up! saddle upl ???. "Bill, have you men calling to one another, "Bill, have you ???eeo my mare???? "Bring that bridle back here,"??? Where is i other hubbub of a hurried departure. But here and there could be seen the ecol old sol dier deliberately folding the blanket that an swered for both saddle and sleeping purposes, smoothing out every wrinkle so as not to hurt the hone???s busk, placipg it with great i the wit' old "Tezi precision high upon ??? ??? - is tree" iihers, setting the carefully over it, and draw. ing a deft knot In the bell v band such as only an old hand can make. He mounts with the esse anil graoe bom of four yean' dally prsc ticc in the saddle, and gels into line long be fore bis fussy messmate. We were soon all in line and the orden fol lowed In quick succession, "By two right in te line," "March," "Trot," "Gallop,??? and away we went at double quick to Crockett???s Gave, four miles away. 11 was a hot ride nod just before reaching the Cove we turned ab ruptly to the left through a palrofhirs. Genrral Morgan stood iu the road and shout ed, "Close up, men," as we galloped hy him. it was evident we were making a tlauk move ment on the enemy and now could be liesrd thoso first sad sounds to the practical soldier'i ear???occsslonal shout from tne distant skirm ishers. To my taste there Is nothing so glo riously rzhllaratlng as the burly burly of a brisk fight???the rapid orders, the rattle of small arms, the boom of the big guns, the wild about and rush of the charge. A11 sense of fear is lest and nothing is thought of but winning a glorious victory. But these first picket shots make you realize tint there is death in the air and you think of home and, perhaps, of religion, if you've got any. Fortunately for us there was not muoh time for indulging In these gloomy thoughts. We were soon in ???line of fight,???' as we always called It, and Colonel Bowles rode out In front nf us and at the top of his voice shout- od, "Now, boys, if you want to give 'em the hellyucko, shoot at their knoea.??? We dis- mounted and rapidly movod forward, taking sboltrr bohlud a rail fence. The firing was rapid, hut the distance, some 500 yard*, too gre it to do much execution. Borne one soon raittil our old) oil, "hook out for Morgan' men,??? everybody went over the fenoe, and, to my surprise, the enemy's skirmish line be gan to fall back. It now became a running fight, and kept so until about 5 o'clock in the afternoon, when our Hue brought up against a stake-aud-rider fence. The enemy was equally well posted on the brow of the op posite lilll. The ground, dipped between the two lines ol battle, end a creek lined with alder bushes, ran through the little valley aboutsqul-dlslsnt In tween us. The enemy had made a ' lie d hoapltal" near and on our aide of this ereek, and as we lay bohlud the fence wa canid see a number of dead home, and Home men with clean white baversacka on them. Theee htvenacka werosmall hags, and 1 became very much Interested In them. We bad net bad a mouthful of codec for more than four months, and, turning to the eoldier by my side, 1 remarked: ???Thompson, do you see thoso haversacks down there? ??? A tmllecrepl over his face as he replied that he did. "I'll bet you they are fll???ed with codec,' said I. "Yon heer all lh-se bullets going over our heads? Now, if on skirt along that fence thst cio aes the cre.k we can slip out and lie down behind those nurses, bs safe and get tome coder." "Alt right," he said; "11 you'll atari I'll fol low." No quicker said than done. Over the fence I weut, with Thotupeon after me. Juat be fore we reaches! the creek, out from behind Uin dense alders marched ol liquely a vegi mem ol Ilia enemy. When half way up the hill and juat before we reached the horaee they gave u< a volley. I sat down with about ???riz inches of bone shot out of tuy leg Tnompion a right arm was taken ofi the next day "Duck" Smith was hit in the bead and heel and was (pinning arouud iu the dust in a death struggle, while I waa rapidly crawl ing infos fencecornsr. Several others were hurt at the same time, but 1 never had an opportunity to Inquire who they were, and for the time oelng I waa thuuderstruck to koow how they got there. Tnat night four eoldiera stumbled ovsr me on the rongb ground. They took me In a blanket to For mer Crocket's house, which was literally fill ed with wounded men. On the next morn ing General Morgan made a hasty visit to Ibis field bo*pital I was well acquaint'd with him, and wben he cauie to the bench that I lav on he took me warmly by the lisnd. "Hardin," said be, ???that wu a mag oidoent charge yon led yesterday." oksdstnii ??? 1 look him in blank amassment, but I was too good a so'dler to deny the statement ol my superior officer. In thinking oyer the matter I remembered there was a rash of men past me just after I was shot, and on in quiry t learned that when Thompson and I went over the fence the reel of the command followed like a flock of sheep, and did not etoi until darkness made an end to the tight. I was afterward told by a stair officer that the general bad remarked that he intended making me a lieutenant on my return to the command; but, alas! the war waa orar befora I got c-fl my crutches, and the general and many of tuy old turn aisles sltep in sildier graves,. while among the myriad surviving generals colonels u.s jora, captains and lieutenants of tha confederacy, I feel lonely, at about the only eoldier on that aide who bore a gun. Editors OoMTtrtmoi: Seeing In Tax CozeriTortog a solicitation for contributions from soldltrs, I will give a short account of the most patient man uader pain and auflar ing that I ever saw. 1 bars often thought of him, and wondered If bis people ever knew what became ol blta. 1 wou'd have written to them but did not know hie postoffiee. He said ha lived in Whitfield county, Georgia. A lady told me that she wrote to his people, t bare forgo-ten her name. She wu a very kind lady, like many I found In Mimisaippi This eoldier wu wounded at tbe battle ol BakeFe Creek, Mississippi, on tht ICth day of May, 1803, and was taken to Raman. Hindu coun???y, that state. Ue wu shot through tbe left shoulder near tbe joint of the arm and shoulder, badly shattering tbe bone. His arm inflamed to his hand and mortified, and all run out to his elbow. He suffered greatly fur want of attention, as moat of our nurses left ua, by tbe yankeea, went home, to tbelr disgrace and shame. I was wounded througk the leg and con fined to my 'sunk for some time before I was able to g-> m crutches. I wu hobbling out one day by a small room in tbe upetairs of tbe hospital wben tbe lady epoken of called my attention to the wounded soldier that am writing of. When I entered tbe room I found nnu lying on hit back, as be could not lav ??ny otherway. There he bad Iain nntil bis se nil) n aim hst rested on his bunk by hts side was ar flat as a board. I tlhoovered at once lie did not have tbe attention be ought to have, so 1 got some clean water and a rag and dressed his wounded arm. When I looked at his arm it wu horrible to b-tho'd I could not understand bow a man coulti ,ive with his srm and shoulder in that condition, yet he never grunted nor com- pla n d. From that day until hedied I done all that I could for him. The kind lady brought thru something to opt u long as Ue lived. At last mortification set In his side and bla shoulder turned black. I saw him tink faster and faster evtry day, until death came and carried off tbe most patient sufferer I ever saw. He did not talk very much. He often spoke of his home and people. I don't think he had much hopes of getting well, and said he was ready to go at the bidding ol the Savior. 1 had him de cently burled, and set up n headboard at his grave with his name cut on it. Ue waa a tolerably Urge man, dark complexion, not very fleshy. His name was Enoch White; aged -15 or 50 years.
