Maatmaw.???In tba war column of Tn* Wxrkly Cokstiiuiios ap peared an article over the signature of W. U. Meritbew, which, if I am right in my sur mises, contains some very gross errors. The article in question proposes lo give an ao count of the repulse of General Wheeler at UcUiilan???s ford on the 24ih of August. No year Is given by Mr. Meritbew, hut other good and valid reasons convinces rue that he had reference to the 24th of August, 18G4, as General Wheeler crossed the Uoislon river at some forJ, which name is not remembered by the writer, about that time. If I am cor rect in my conjectures, these are the facts in thecise: About 11 o???clock a. m., (day of the month not remembered, butit era* someday between the 2t)lh and 20th uf August, of lHtltJ General W., accompanied by his es.ort, couriers, etc., reached the south bank of tho Molaton river at a ford whose name 1 also fall to remem ber, if indeed I ever heard it, some 12 or IS miles east of Knoxville, where he discovered some federal aoldiersou the opposite or north bauk. In a lew momenta the Tnird Arkansaa cavalry arrived, formed a line, dismounted and formed again on foot in about 76 yards of the river bank. At lliia time General W,. with two or three other persona, win standing on the river bank taking ob-u-rvatiun, the plaes where be stood and where the regiment termed being an old held not then in culti vation. ihitu banks of tbs river wero well lined with greeu trees and underbrush, con aequently aliurued good covering for Doth pirires. As soon as the regiment had farmed on foot ft marched to the river bauk where General W. was standing, and ou reaching mere he ordered them to open and continue a brisk fire along the opposite bauk, as he wanted to aend a company over the river to capture tboae soldiers over there. Ax the sequel will show, the federels were on ibe north bank of the river, we on the south. To crocs the river from the south side it hud to be emered some M yards above where face came out on the norm aide, oonaeqiietuly in mVeiog tho crotsing face travelled from southeast to aouthwest. Upon examination it appeared that iu time, and when the lord wna first mado It hart been made so as to enter the river from the north aldeaud travel down It oouiiug out somewhere below; but for some cause this route had long aince been abandoned, and the ford made to the left and pointing diagonally aoroas tho river lo the ford in the aoutheaai direction, as be fore staled. Now, iu the forka ot these two fords on the north bank, and very near the edge of the water was a sin dl mound about two feet high and sume 10 or 16 foot long, tbo remains of what had evidently been a son of second bauk. Behind this m mini and in the folks of the two roads, lay con cealed three or four of these federal guards Just above the ford were a lew more. On tnu bank Hood a horse hitched lo a swinging limb; just abovu the ford stood another Similarly fastened, Hiid the two horses were all we could see; hut when General W first arrived he had discovered a rqusd ot soldiers, but how many he did not know, hence bin cautloncu. As tooti os Ihs Third Arkansas opened lira a company of tba Eighth Texas cavalry moved ofTin the Ulrceuou of Ihe ford, aud as We all well knew to cross over. Observing tbit one of the Ttitnl Arkansas cavalry re marked ???That thaw rankers over Ihete were lyiug behind that little bauk; that they had pistols, blankets, etc., and that those d???d Texaua would gat it all." In a moment inure be made tbo same observation, aud added: ???I'll be U???d It 1 don't oral tin m this time " In a moment mora he had dlvraied blhirell of tils clolbing, gave them to his brotn.r, and plunged into the river lo awim across. He had, however, been anticipated by other edventurone member of me Third who had done the tame thing and mar ihu same time. The Third Arkansas had been formed ou the south bank aud immediately opposite tbs ford on the north bauk, whare ilia fed eral* sure enough lay cunoealed At tliu race (or the opposite bauk was bring made be tween the two Arkantlana, the nalauca ot tbi r -gluirnlbecanio moreimerrsted In it than iu tha federal guards on tho opfets ts side, and had in consi quence uf it almost ceassd firing. Uy this lime the Texans bad gotteu nearly to me middle of the river, which was about aaddle-ttirt deep, and observing lhai Ibe Third had almost ceased firing, holloed out to them to "lire on, but to sbuot a ilttir higher." in a minute more the Texaut bad reached ahaliow water, when putting spurs to their horses, dashed forward. At they dtti so the federal* lying b bind this little mound or bank, for the Hr t time, aa they atated themselves, observed them, and arose and started tin the bank; but I'teT.xana were ton quick foij heoi.cap'.url g ham wllhoi t firing ??? gun. As they n-e-uittn up tint batik 1 no.toed one was a tall man, and had ou a linen duster. Onto! the thir l no iotug it ???aid qtilcklv: ???Look at that d???d fellow with a linen coat on; I'll bet lie la a quarter- metier." The two men who bad undertaken to swim the river tuocredrd admirably, ike one tint proposing it toeing the taller watted more, and oouiiqmn'ly reached the coveted p'ac-gliiti* ahead id Ihe other, and sure enough captured two line pistols, while the other one got two splendid army blanket*. N iw. as it lesards Mr. Meruhew???t state ment of the killing ot ???forty or fifty," I can only say that if one single man was eyer w.'Unded, no one In the whole command evtr knew it There eere not more than 200 of ihe Thlni Arkansas present, and as ???aw the entire command all the time, and for days afterwards. I know tbet not oue man was hurt at this creeeing. Mr Meritbew relates ihe conversation be tween General Wheeler end one of the cap tured guards. Toe part assigned lo General W. does not sound much like Whedfer. is it not likely that Mr Meritbew it lull when in iu befog Wheeler 7 If he end 1 have ref erence to the same time aud ihe earns foul, he ie badly mistaksu in suppealug we tus tained any loss. If, however, we have refer ence to the same dele, but lo ??? difisrem ford, he is again mistaken, (nr be never saw Gen eral Wheeler It was some one of bis sub ordinates whom be taw and not ???Little Joe." After we hail all crossed the river we baited f ir eeverst hours, and dying the time we reuld plainly bear the fire of ran non up the river, and 1 wot told that it was John Morgan lusseling wim the enemy at Straw berry Plains. This might not have been Morgan, boi may have beensoiueof Wheeler'a in lien of my claim agsinat the bankrupt government and awaited (he result. Itcame sooner Hit* I expected. The thoroughly disciplined regiment of veterans which for an hour had surrendered itself to desponden cy and despair was suddenly seised with a senseless, and, therefore, uncontrollable panic. In a moment discipline wax forever at aD end. Virginia cavalry, which bad never faltered before the enemy, had become a hopeless mob. The next day I was many miles sway, fol lowing the southwesterly trend of the moun tains in compsny with two brothers of the beating craft, one a North Carolinian and one areeidentof Nashville. The scenery about us w*< magnificent. Far to the southeast rose Pilot Knob, a mass of bma against the horizon. The trees were beginning to bnd, and here and there great cluster! of pink arbutus peeped irom beneath the dark green leaves Bat little were we thinking of our surroundings. The present was too uncer tain and the future too cheerless to admit of pleasant thoughts. At length Dr. B., our comrade from the old north state, began to show signs of being unsteady in the saddle Poor fellow I Sherman had left hia bouse in ashes and bis forluno had entirely melted away. The shock was to much for film, and 'with the aid of liquor he bed sunk Into a de* spondency frein which we vainly attempted to arouse him. At flret he begged us to leavehim; but when wo still urged him to rise from the roadside where he had seated himself, he drove us from him with threats and cnrscs Bo we left him and sadly con tinued onr way for nearly a week, when mv companion bade me farewell and returned homeward through a gap in the mountalna. Hardly had he left me when I found my self suddenly surrounded lay a troop of des perate looking characters, whom I discovered lo he a party of Georgians who had deesrted in time to avoid the anrrender, and who were now finding their way homewares cautiously in order to avoid Btonemsn'e prowling de tachments. Finding that I, too, was "going south," they received me with ruugli cordial- I'y and treated me with genuine kindness. Upon perceiving that mv horse wes rapidly fagging they stretched their courtesy rsther far, I am afraid, by (-.impelling a gentleman who was driving peaceably along the road to halt while they unhitched his horse and placed mine in itsstcad. They then merrily assisted me to mount my now steed aud I resell IV quieted my conscience in the matter by refloating that the gentleman had un doubtedly gained by tho transaction, for tha find so unceremoniously tnscepUbla ot any such contfrucTon. cannot bt laecewfully attacked In tea- tlment er tone.
