A rumor current that the LaGrange Banking
and Tiuit company had I oat lie 000 In the Now
York failures la pronounced untrue.
Dr. IV. a. Morgan, of Troup county, has a pow-
dor gourd which hla great-great grandfather It
supposed to hare uaed forty yeara before string It
to hla grand.lre, who was then twelre year* old
At the latter's death. In 1U9. he willed It to Dr.
' Morgan's father, the late Thomas Morgan, of this
county. In 1877, he died, tearing It to Its prison
owner. The gourd must hare been taken from
the rlne abont 1(97, making it 1(7 yeara old. The
only doubt about Its age arises from the want of
positive knowledge aa to the length of time It was
possessed by the great-great grandparent The
above faelasre reo.rded In the family Bible. The
doctor aaya money could not buy the retie.
Sunday schools In Gainesville are flourishing.
Tho Methodist Sunday school has 3(7 pupils, the
Baptist 3IS and tho Presbyterian M. This is ex
elusive of the colored schools.

acres of extra line wheat, which Is being destroyed
by birds. More than fifty birds bare been killed
in the Held within the last three days.

A nrgro child six years old was burned to death
in a cabin on the farm of Mr. V. W. Matthews, near
???checonnce, Houston county. The father and
mother of the child went out to work that morntrg
tearing the child alone In the cabin sitting on a
stool near the hearth. Ills not known how the
child's clothing caught Are, but U was badly
burned when lta screams attracted the attention of
a negro man. The child was not unconcloua
though burned nearly to a crisp. It lived flvo or
six hour*.
In bis charge to the grand Jury of Wilkes county,
Judge Pottle, referring to the recent events tn Cin
cinnati, declared that the eutbreak there may be
repeated anywhere, The people shculd feel that
the law It supreme. When a great crime bad been
committed, only penial J istlce, In the estimation
of the publle, had been administered. ???Wild
Justice" sought to remedy the failure of legal Jus
tice. Mob violence la no correction for legal wrong
on tho part of Juries. 1 know of no offense for
which the law does not furnish
an ample remedy. Unfortunately, the substantia
men of the country do not throw their Influence
on the side of the law???service on Juries should not
be a burden, but a duty. It Is not to be dlrgulsed,
that the public are becoming dissatisfied with tho
result of criminal trial, and this dlisallalactlon Is
the cause of these popular commotions If a mi-
gautln tho courts, offer bribes to a Juror, or even
extends to him the common rights uf hospitality
during tho time of servlee It l?? made a felony un
der our taw.
The fltewarl county grand Jury rccommouda
that:
???the peep'e of Ibis county should uan their Influr
enco to suppress the great evil of rctalllug spiritu
ous and malt liquors In this ooumy and request
thst that tho oraluary Itsue no more license for
that purpose.

balance of 11,079.(3 sgslnat me couuiy.
Tho charge of Judge Willie, In opening Musco-
gee superior court, deserves lobe claaaod asanlm
portent slalo paper. He touches trenchantly
upon many of the evils by which society lsbeatt
and formulates Ihe lsw In such a manner as not to
be misunderstood. As to tho Importance of the
grand jury ho ssld:
Tho law requires that Ihoy consist of tho most ex-
pcrtccccd, luu-mu--i.t at ,1 upright meu tn theoom
mULliy, for to them wo must look for the suppres
sion of crime and the supervision ot county nova
eminent. A grant! Juror la an t nicer of ihe law,
sworn In Hlturm a rpoetal, ttmlieii nto o ilupl- in-
antduly, and perform ltwltbom fear, favor, affec
tion, roward, or the hops thereof, as wollas without
envy, horrid or mallco lr has been
said, I think with truth, that tho character of the
grand Jury In any particular county can ho ascer
tained tty tho smouut of crlmo and tho nil
clencyot tho officers. Go Into* community where
theHabbath day la not observed, whom parties
oontngatearound drinking aaloona aud drinking
homes, whim the officers at# careless, Indifferent
and Inefficient, and theta you will ffud a county
whose g, end Jurors have not oomo up to tho to-
qurementa ol ihe law,
The carrying of concealed weapons la strongly
condemned, ivtn officer* being compelled to cany
tbrlr weapons so that they may be teen of all men,
???More homicides are committed by reason of tho
violation of this section of tho code," said the
Judge, "ibau almost any section of the law. Pis
tols and whisky ara Ure return of more crime In Uro
state of Georgia than any other two things. Tho
one, whisky, is theoonstint companion of tho vag
abond, The other Is the bosom friend of Ihe cows
srd."
On Runday tippling ha says:
If a man compiles with the law be may
keep a tippling bouse. Hla days In tho
week he may keep It open, but the law
says when the seventh arrlvea It shall he closed
and what It miwna by twins olo*??d la that ovary ae

As to selling llqnor to minora:
Another section: "No person or persons, by

met the prosctmUon with Ure defruae that he
didn't know that he was vlolsilug the law: that
the young man told him that ha bad tha content

was u-lllrg him the troth, and them was ne Inlen-

Invariably acquitted on that plea. The legislature
saw the nemelty of a change, and heu

INDUSTRIAL. TOPICS.
NOTES ON CURRENT TOPICS-
Jos bcct-sugar industry In this country does not
get on well. The factory at Portland. Maine,
which wss expected to revolutionize the agricul
ture of New England, has been sold, and Its ma
chinery is to be carried to New Orleans to be need
In working np the cane of Louisiana. The rchemo
of Inaugurating a beet-sugar lndusrry in central
New York has also been abandoned. It la estimated
that abont 94,000.000 has been sunk In beebengtr
experiments In this country. Much Is still written
however, abont the wonderful success of the
beet-sngar Industry In France, Germany, and
other European countries It la certain that
the Industry has become an important one. It
Is estimated that about two mlUlou teres of land
are devoted to the production of sngar beets In the
various countries of the continent of Europe. The
bnilnesa has been encouraged In denMly popu
lated countries for various reasons, hut principally
because It furnishes employment to women and
children whe aro obliged to work In tbe field*.
Hand work is required to thin and weed tbe young
plants, to out off the tops, and to prepare the roots
for Ihe factory. Oecnpttlons that give employment
to many people aro very desirable In countries
where land is high and the population lx dense.
We hive conditions exactly the reverie of there In
this country. Land lx chexp and plenty and the
population la scattered. Little hex ever been pub
lished to show that beat xogar production la very
profitable in the countries where most attention Is
given to 1L In meat countries on the continent of
Europe manufacturers are well satisfied with a bas

Tux Hennepin canal project la again before con-
gram. IU projectors want 1300,000 with which to
begin the work of licking Ihe groat lakes aud tha
Mississippi together with a ship canal. The ultl-
mate oost of the big ditch la put at 84.500,0(0, bnt
it is more likely to be 120,010,000. The route of tbe
proposed canal extends from Bock Island on the
Mississippi river eastwatd to Hennepin on the
Illinois river, a dlstanco of 65 miles. From tho
Mississippi to tho summit level the distance will be
forty mllcc, and nine locks will be required In this
part of the work. From the summit to Hennepin
tho distance will be 29 miles, and In this part of
Ihe work nineteen locks wlU be needed. The cost
wa- estimated ton years sgo at t( 600 00c.
There Is now in me a canal from Lako Michigan,
at Chicago, westward to La Belle, on tbs Illinois
river. Boats using this canal pass from La Salle
down the Illinois river to the 'Mississippi, a few
miles above St Louis. It will be seen, therefore,
that there la already a waterway lo use between tho
Mississippi and the lake at Chicago. The edvocatea

connected with ihe existing canal at La Balls by
means c-f slack water navigation for twenty miles
on tho Illinois river???say that It la noeded for the
accommodation of shippers In tbe upper Mississippi
