Maho.vk'r Ft-ang Mot??h*iit.???In 1864, I
think, the yankeea advanced in heavy force
on the Weldon railroad, near 1???etenbnrg,
Virginia, and thereto were again called out
to checkmate, and ao General Uabone, of
Fetenbnrg, took command of Boke???a dlvia
ion (became he waa acquainted with the hog
patbain that aection) and atarted on a flank
movement. Oar object waa to attack in tbe
rear, and being in a hurry to do aomething
while tbe fun waa going on, we left Fetera-
. burg In tbe morning,^nd taking an eaaterly
direction cut through thoyankee linea, which
had been weakened by the withdrawal o(
troop*, and atruck a bee line for Ream???* Sta
tion, where the firing waa going on, for we
meant bueineta. Well, the country waa
oveigrown with buahea, weeda and briara and
many of tbe bog patha obliterated by the
preceedlng foe, ao that???well, I don't know
how Uahoue got loot or captured, but our
liueeomehow diverged from a baa line, dl
viding in the center, eome bearing to the
right and aome to the left. I auppoao through
their eagernea* te gal Into the hotteit place,
bcciuae there waa conaiderable nolee and
hubbub both to tbe right and left of tbe
coura* we bad dm taken. We knew that
General Lee waa in front, and we wanted to
acare them out of tbe buabea ao he oould get
them, but they didn't acare worth a cent;
but we did, for we all got loet and raized up
wi'h tbe yankeea we bad driven before ua
oat of their weakened linea and camp*. Tbe
wnole dtv.aion aeemed to be divided into
equada. 1 don't know how many men waa
left with each ofllcar, but my command waa
reduced to one man, and ao I marched my
command acroae aome big road, (name un
known) down one of the hog patha, going It
blind, andalao lame, for I had just drawn a
new pair of confederate ahoea, and through
pride, negligence or aome other came bad put

with tbe celerity of our movement* aoon

Dunaldaon, 1 attempted to cut my way oui
I. e., I cut out through the buahea and dlu

fate, or luck or aouetaing elae waa agalnat

came foe, and atill keeping my oommand
prisoner. I grabbed the morale of hie gL..
and we went into a tuaael for lie possession,
but be got the gun away from me, and
threatened to scatter what little brains 1 bad
to the four winds. I apologised by telling
him that 1 had already surrendered, but
didn't like hi* way of pointing a gun, and ao
1 was captured with my whole command.
But my captor waa loatas well aa 1, and with
genuine yankce alrrewdneaa he decided that
instead of dissipating my email stock of
brains, ho would make use of them to guide
him out of the wilderness. Wilderness?
The wilderness, so called, was not a circum
stance tolt. But now cornea the tug of war
between yank and I. Being acouatnmcd to
command obedience I must now render it,
and guldo my commander out of the bushes,
1 wasn't under Maliuuo then, and sons guide
I Started for tlio big road I had crossed,
where 1 had seen a squad of rebs guarding
eome prisoners. My commander wanted me
to bear more to tiro right, but I told him we
bad a brigade in that direction who would
riddle us if they saw ao. many bine coats.
And ao he followed me passively until wo
reached tbe big road, and found th* same
guard aud prisoners 1 bad seen before. Sold
ou , says my yaukee friend of tbe Spencer
rifle. Lay down your arms, said I, in a tone
of authority, which command waa immedi
ately obeyed, and being just at that moment
reinforced by one of my own men he took
one Spenoer rifle and 1 look tbe other, when
this change in atreire increased my c-uumand
to two rebs and three guns, and 83 yanks
without guns. But coming up to our -guard
with ao many yank* ou double quick oon-
fined them, aud th* moat of their prisoners
escaped, Being now in oommand of ao
many men 1 left th* one who was captured
with ma to reinforce the guard on tbe road,
and with the oue who had reinforced me
atarted scrota the Appomattox river by th*
way of lVteraburg wiih our prisoner*, which
I turned over tJ the proper authorities. Un
th* way 1 gave my Speucer ritle to a rebel
scout, and my oomiu.nderaold hit to abaker
for (100 worth of o.ktaand cider, which we
ate and drank bafo.u r< joining ourcomradea.
Aa a result of the iiuvemont I think wa
captured betweeu twenty-seven and eight
hundred yanks, aid lost batween thirty and
forty men. How ,be rest all fared in the
expedition I don't know, but I don't think
that any ofllcar, from General Mahone down
to a fourth sergeant, can abow as n result
tuuro prisoner, for tbe number of men en
gaged or as lane a quantity of cake* and
rider consumed after our return.

???Twaavv Yearns Aoo."???Just twenty yean

Immediately after dark. General Grant, to
bluff General Lee, ordered hie picked band to
tbe front, and bad them to play ???Yaukee-

General Lee, like a game fighting cock,
marched hlseeleet handout and bed them to
play the old familiar lane ???Dixie." Which
ie well remembered by every old soldier. Tbe
boys in blue cheered Yankee doodle, while
tbe boys in gray raised shouts for ???Dixie.???
Karly on the morning of the 12th Inst, wbils

years since that memorlable battle of Spotsyl
