THE WEEKLY CONSTITUTION: ATLANTA TUESDAY, JUNE 10 1884.???TWELVE PAGES. CHICAGO. CnnHnucd from frconilftie platform. Tito thoroughbred youngster on whose arm ho leant Is Komker, who was beaten by HoaiNy. Senator Hoar, with his gray hair escaping front under his felt lmt recalls Horace Greeley, as he rolls carelessly along. The New York delegation, 70??? strong, is greeted with cheers os it enters. At the head is George Willliam Curtis, tho gifted fniud, who after dcnouneing'oOice-holders for interferring with politics, yesterday urged the election of a negro oHicodmldcr as chair* man of the convention. The scholarly young fellow with eye-glasses and boyish face at his left is Hooscreit???a young Harvard graduate???who lias shown amazing capacity in the New York assembly and is even now- spoken of for the vicc-prcsldcitcy, and the most promising figure in the convention. The Georgia delegation files to its seat without exciting applause, tho crowd probably not recognizing the commanding figure of John K. Bryant. In the South Carolina delegation I noted Ed Blodgett. Mr. Hawkins, of Tennessee???In offering that resolution I did It In good faith, mid I trust there Is not n delegate to las found that is not ready uml resolution, and ??? willing tosuppo.. the nominee oi this convention, he surely ought not to be allowed in this convention. J don't rare when* he cornea from, and I know of no harm that can come to a man who Is here for the purpose ol participating In making this nomination. I know* of no hunn that can come of indorsing that reso lution, and saying ho is willing to stand by the nominee of this convention. 1 "** ??? k ??? ???* ^ puxsed. 1 have heard whispers In the air as to tho course through the list. One missed tho faces of < 'onkling, Garfield, Cameron, Logan, and other giants who figured in the con vention of 1880, and concluded that this was rather a meeting of smart politicians. Steve French, Mike I'regan and Johnny O???Brien file post ns I write, ambitious youag fellows rather than real leaders. The convention went to work with a will, the California delegation plumping in a reso lution pledging every delegate to supjiort the nominee of the convention. This was evi dently nlincd nt the reformers, and when the speaker alluded to tho editor of a great pe* riodical as a probable bolter, meaning Curtis, the shouts were deafening and an ugly fight was averted by the withdrawal of this reso lution. III.AIXK ami Ml A PRETTY PLAN. A significant feature of tho address of tho permanent president was tho storin aroused by the allusion to Blaine. Mr. Henderson * a W. T. Sherman man, and after consulta tion with Geo. Wm. Curtis and Murat Hal stead, had agreed to point his speech into an allusion to each candidate, leading up care fully to General Sherman as the climax, when by a few inspiring sen tcnccs it was hoped to fire the old war sentiment and sweep tho convention off its feet, and thus start the Sherman lxxnn Everything worked well for the scheme. The allusion to each candidate brought moderate applause. At length Blaiue was reached. 4 s the words ???whose genius challenges tho ad miration of mankind??? fell from the presi dent*! lips, a most remarkable scene ensued, The California delegates mounted thelrchairs and waved their whito banners. Tho north western delegations responded with a will Pennsylvania came up with terrific yells. Tho bulk of the New York delegation fol lowed; The galleries caught the infection and a sea of kerchiefs andlmts rose and fell against tho outer walls. The press gang???nearly 1,000 strong ??? mounted it*tables and hats, paj??ersaiid canes went into the air. Kvcn the dignitaries of the stage lost their heads, and Joined in tho universal yell. As far as tho eyes could see the tu mult of hats, umbrellas, canes, anything that one could saw the air with was extended. The noise was simply deafening. As it ebbed, fresh voices would take it up again and again. Men cried, cursed and yelled. When It died away finally, the convention looked like a young forest after a wind storm had ravaged it Chairs were' overturned, hats were lodged hero and there, tho fiug-poles were gone. Collars, cravats and even coats were awry. Delegates were mis placed, hugging each other, punting, laugh ing hoarsely, trying to howl once more. In the general tumult tho General Sherman boom was lost. Tho president???s voice sounded thin and childish after the roar of tho con vention. His allusions to Sherman???s march ing through Georgia, to Kcnucsaw, Dalton and Atlanta fell flat. A convention nover re peats a thing like the Blaine hurrah. It ex pended all its force right there, and Uncle Billy???s march through Georgia was a sort of a dead march. In that one five minutes the Blaine men recovered all their uudocity and aggressiveness. Their mistake of yesterday was wiped out by an accident of to-day. Con gressman Hosing, of Pennsylvania, a strong Arthur man, said; ???That looks mighty ugly.??? By general agreement the convention ad journed uftcr this exceptional episode until evening, to see which alone was worth tho trip Chicago. T1IE ATTITUDE OV THE DEMOCRATS. The attitude of the democrats hero is strange. They realize (terfcctly that lllainu will be the hardest nun to beat; that Arthur or Logan, or Kdmunds could be l>eaten, and yet they have caught the general enthusiasm and lioi>e to see their most dangerous antago nist put in the field. A leading democrat said to me to-night, that if Arthur were nominated, Tildcn would not take the stand ard of the democracy, as there are many democrats who could beat him, but that if Blaine is nominated lie will ac cept the nomination, and take the Maine statesman in hand ldmself. An Iowa delegate said to-day, in my hear ing: ???I am for Blaine, but I voted for I.yneh because I could not help, as an old almlitionist, voting for an ex-shire to show his old masters what we mean to do for the negro/' A FAINT rilEKIt FOR GRANT. At an enormous mass meeting to-night an allusion by ex-Govemor Oglesby to the cloud how hanging over General Grant and the hope that it would (miss away, caught special applause, but did not touch the geuerul heart The weather is very much colder Jo-night, and overcoats are in demand.
