I???ri>on Ltrx lit CampChasr.???After we had
been in prisou perhaps three month*, cook
rooms were added to the rear of tho barracks
and ranges placed in them. The men were
divided into messes of about twenty each and
each mess was numbered. One man from the
tness did the rooking, and he wns allowed 4??
hold the position of cook for a month. We
were all like the Ieau kin* of - Pharaoh's
dream from actual want of food to keep u* fat.
A certain amount of food is actually necessary
to keep any animal from growing leau., A less
amount may keep him alive, but there must
be a decrease of flesh. Such was our condi
tion. We were given just sufficient to keep us
alive, but notauflicient to keep us up to stand
ard weight. By the time a man had been in
the cook room a week he began to fatten, and
before his mouth had expired ho looked
bloated. On the same jwinciplo, put a half
starved pig into a pen, give him all he ran rat
and in a mouth he would hardly he recognized
me the same pig. Of course the cook had all
he could eat. Wo could expeat nothing else
In fact the man who would not, under such
circtimstaneees, have filled himself, would
have been a fit subject for the nsylutn. He
was not robbing any one inuu of all bis rn
tious???be was simply cxaotiug slight tribute
from a number of men. Or in other words, bo
was taking pay for his labor in tho cook room
out of the general commiHiwiry fund. Three
times a dsy the cook stood before the little
nqiinro hole cut through tho wall and railed
out, ???mess number ; route up and get your
rations," and then there was a grand rush for
???the hole in the wall.'Each man wasfbandcd his
little piece of meat and little piece of bread,
which he generally disposed oi at about half
a dozen bites, quitting as hungry us be com
menced. Hud it not been for tolmeco I would
have starved. We could buy tobacco front the
auttler???if wo hud the tickets. Me kept blit
one kind in bis shop???little, short, thin, black

lasses, one-fourth tobacco, and the other fourth
sticks, stems, dirt, etc. Mot iiiifretpiently a

ally feathers, hairs, mid some fellow found half

wo could chow the filthy stuff. Well, now, a
man who could sit down and eat his dinner,
all the whilo seeing body lire crawling around
him and on him, had a atoiuaeli to stand any
thing. Nobody over thought^of asking an
other for a chew of tobacco. Hu knew it was
of no use. 1 was fool enough to ask for a chew
once. The man 1 asked had a whole plugin
his hand helping himself a chew. He
looked me straight in the face, hit off his chow,
put tho plug in his (MH'ket and walked oil???
without saying a word. 1 didn't try it any
more. This was n few days aftw 1 went into
the prison, before I had received any money,
and 1 hadn't had n chew in some time. You
wander how tho man who fiAd no friends in
side thoyankee lines could get money! Hov

work, numbing, etc., for those who had money,
(itememher that the word money as I use it,

trinkets of various kinds. Once in n while
some follow would get sick, ami then he would
sell his rations. A man who was not sick,
never had anything in that lino for sale. I
used to wonder if there were no preachers in
that ???0 *1 and morality"country who felt any
