THE MODEL.
THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST WAS
SPIRIT OF SELF-SACRIFICE.
There is Nothin* Store Desirable Than a Pleasant
Disposition??Without It We Cannot be Happy
Ourselves and We Cannot Make Others
Happy-What Self-Sacrifice Is.
Brooklyn', Jane 29 [Special].???Dr. Till
mage preached in the Brooklyn tabernacle thi.
morning on the luhject: ???The Model." Before
the sermon Dr. Talmage expounded a pat.ago
of the New Testament. The opening hymn
waa:
"Oh, could I speak the matchless worth,
Oh, could I sound the glories forth
Th.tln mySaviorihlnc!"
The text was Romans viii, 9: ???Now if any
man have not the spirit of Christ he is none
of His."
There is nothing more desirable, said Dr.
Talmage, than a pleasant disposition. With
out it we cannot be happy ourselves, and we
cannot make others happy. When we feel
that we have been vexed and have lost our
temper, or have been impatient under some
light cross, we wake up to new appreciation
of proper equipoise of nature. We wish that
we had been born with self-balance. Wo envy
the bearing of that man who is never thrown
into perturbation. We live under the feeling
that as years pass along our character will be
mellowed and ripened, and we will become
more self-controllable, forgetful of the fact that
an evil left in our nature uneradicated grows
to more offensive proportions, and that a trans
gression not cast out may become the grand-
lather of a great generation of iniquities. It
is possible to have our dispositions alt made
over again. Because we do not believe this
our dispositions do not improve. A man says:
???I am irrascjble and I can't help it j" or ???I am
revengeful and I can???t help it, or ???I am im
pulsive and I cau???t help it.??? You can help it.
We may have our dispositions made over again
I postmorten examination in order that
tbev might know how to meet and arrest that
awful disease. And there was silence in the
. college of surgeons till Dr. Guion rose and
I said: ???I know it is certain death to dissect
one of those bodies; but somebody must do it,
and I shall. In the name of God and hu-
??? inanity I will do the work.??? He went home,
made out his will, then went to the dissection,
accomplished it and in twelve hours died.
That was self-sacrifice 1 that the world under
stands. Ob, the more wonderful sacrifice of
the Son of God. He walked to Emmons.' He

Nbw York, June 20.???I suspect that tho be-
walked from Capernaum to Bethany. He lief prevails only in New York city that Mr.
walked from Jerusalem to Calvary. How far
have you and I walked for Christ? His head
ached, his heart ached, his back ached for us.
How much have we ached for him? Let us
this morning look ovorall the years of our life
and see the paltry list of our self-sacrifices, not
one deed in my life or in your life worthy the
name.
Still further: the spirit of Christ was a spirit
of humility. The Lord of heaven and earth in
the garb of a rustic. He who poured all the
waters of the earth out of his hand???tho
Amazon, tho Epuhrntos, .???the Mississippi, the
Ohio, the St. Lawrence???bending over a well
to beg of a Samaritan woman a drink* He
who spread out tho Canopy of the heavens and
set tho earth for his footstool, lodging with one
Simon, a tanner. He whose chariots the winds
ore walking with sore feet. Jostled as though
he were a nobody. . Pursued as though Tie
were a criminal outlaw. Nicknamed.* Struck
at. Spit on. Hushing the tempests, and yet
setting down without any assumption in the
cabin uy tho disciples as though he had done
no more than wife the sweat from his brow in
his father???s carpenter shop. Taking the foot
of death off the heart of Lazarus, and breoking
the shackles against the grave mouth, and yet
walking home with Mary and Martha ns
though he were only a plain citizen ot Jerusa
lem going out to stay the night in the subur
ban village of Bethany. Omnipotence under
a countryman's garb. Walking in common
sandals, seated with publican* and sinners.
Oh, the humility of tho Son of God! How lit
tle you and I have of it. We gather a few
more dollars than other people have, or we get
a little higher social position than some one
else has, and* how we strut and want people to
know their places, and cry out: "Is not this
Tilden did not mean to withdraw from candi-
, dacy for the democratic presidential nomina
tion when he recently wrote that ho ought not
to be a candidate and could not undergo the
labors of a campaign and an administration;
but the belief is entertained by a great many
persons here, of both political parties,
that he will yet be the .nom
inee aud candidate of the party. You
can hear fears and hopes expressed of this
conclusion among many prominent men when
the subject comes up'in conversation. The fact
is, that the coming convention and the present
slow fever pauic among the millionaires are
about the only topics now discussed here. Re
publicans arc about equally divided as to
whether Tilden is the easier or the more diffi
cult man to beat; while the general argument
of tho democrats who favor Tilden
is that he is the ono man
on whom all factions of their
bo united. Generally speaking,
republicans Tear Tilden's siren,
tween tho two votes does not indicate any per 1
eonnl unpopularity on the part of Slocum; but
shows that ihe disgust which republicans felt
over the methods by which Folger was nomi
nated did not extend to tho laughable nomi
nation of Carroll. Many republicans
who voted for Cleveland voted for Carroll.
The fact, however, is that tho nhcnomennl
majorities of both Cleveland and Slocum were
due to the failure of vast numbers of republi
cans to vote at all. Of those who did not vote
for Cleveland, every oue will vote this year
for Blaine; and of the republicans who, in
their iudignation at tho way in which Folger???s
nomination was brought about, voted for his
opponent, hardly one in a hundred will fail to
vote for Blaine; while the machine vote which
went to Folger in 1882 will go in a body to
Blaine.
Herein will He the weakness of Governor
Cleveland if he is mads the nominee of tho
party at Chicago. These are not my prognos
tications. The three several propositions that
Blaine will get all the Garfield vote of 1880,
and its natural increase, all the Folger vote of
1882 and the vote that stayed at noine that
year, and psrticulsrly the whole republican
vote that went as a protest to Cleveland, Lie
very freely admitted by democrats, and thoso
