Our harvesting in over .nil the (raveling
llirnsh hu been along ami for four da;, ha.
been apnimodicall; rattling iu wheel, on our
premises. One good day would have done the
work but when they got fairly begun tho white
capped cloud, would ri.e and then the rolling
rumbling thunder .hook the air and ??oon the
big drop, of rain gave warning to quit and so
we had to wait until everything dried ofT and
it wn?? thi. way every day. But it ia
all over now and I ant glad of it
for I am tired. I thought I had
an ea??y berth U* keep the tally ??heet, and ??o I
planed off a white pine board and ruled .omo
linen and got all ready for figure., hut J toon
found out it waa ea.ie??t to count by .ack>, and
an hand, were Marco they very kindly put me
at holding the ??nck* open hi put the wheat in
from the half bu.hel mea.ure, and when the
sack had a bu.hel and a half meanprcd in I
had to lift it away and get an eninty one quick
for the neat measure, and the first
thing I know they were rolling
out two bu.hel. a minute, and the
aecond thing 1 knew I waa all in a .went of
Iierapiratinii, for I tell you n hundred pound,
of wneal may be light enough at fir.t hut it
kcepa getting heavier and heavier and the
end. of my finger. kept on
getting .orer and .orer, but I
never let on nor .urrendered, for everybody
ctae had a hard time too, except the bo... It
waa nabor Freeman*, tbraali and he
know, how to run one and he known how to
take care of himaelf in the bargain. Ilia good
wife think, lie i. working awml hard ami ex
hausting himaelf every day, and look, away
off dreamily and exclaim., ???poor man !??? How
credulous there good women are
and how en.y it i?? to fool ???em. I've
watched nabor Freeman for four
day. ns he perambulated around
ami all I???ve ever seen him do was to oil the
machinery occasionally and holler at the dar*
Itiea and cut some whang leather to sow up a
broken band. When he gets hungry he
mount, hi. horse and goes to breakfast dr to
dinner, but the rest of u. hud to take it any
way ami sometime. not at all.
Flaying boss ia a popular avoca
tion in this .nbloonary world. I like to play
bom. All the white folk, like it, and that ??
the reason the darkies all cnll us boss. Home-
time. I go out to the field, under great pres
sure or business, to reguluto thing,
and keep things goiug, and Mrs.
Arp think. I am working mighty hard and is
sorry for me, but she don't know that
I am lying down in tho .hade or up
in a mulberry trim, or picking
dewberries ami ao when I got most home you
ought to see how tired I can look, and now
weakly I can walk, and how laiigui.hingly I
recline on the sofa in tho hall. "Car!, go right
to the spring and bring your papa aomo fresh
water. Jessie, gel a fan ami cuol yuur papa
off.???
???Well, there???s nothing like it. It is just
splendid, but nalair Freeman can beat me nl
that game. It rained on us yesterday a lit
tle-nothing to hurt, amt he got his hickory
shirt wet and went home and made out like
it waa honest porspiration, and he
was mighty nijjh dead. I ain
taking leasons from him, I am.
Well, I have handled over 10* sacks of grain,
say thirty thousand pounds. That is to say, 1
have dragged cm off a little ways from the
thrash slid set ein up. ami I swell around
among the family ana talk about "30,000
pounds I??? Just think of It???a man of my
age and Infirmity handling 30,000
pounds. And now I ran real on my laurels
and play hern. Howland lifted it all from the
ground and put it in tho wagon and hauled
it away to the crib anil lifted it out again, but
Howland don???t rare. Kowlaud would do It
every day all the year round and keep lively,
but I???m not that sort of a man. But Ilewland
i?? proud just now. lie has made a brag crop,
eighteen bushels of wheat to Sin- acre la enough
to m.ko a |KNir man proud. We arc all proud
litis time, and vainly imagine we dons ft and
it is all our doings. But |wrhapa we may do
the same way next year aud not make over
half as much.
There was a harvest frolic in the ua-
borhuod last night; a gathering of
the young and tome of the old
and we had a right good time,
with music and tong and social greetings.
Tho young people kept it up lively until a late
hour and some curious things were aaid on the
aly I reckon, for I overheard a youth remark,
"Oh, Mis. Mollio Aim, I've been prayin' a
heap of late???I prayed for

change occurred during the duy other than a weak
