While the negroes were talking of matter*

Tlio Story of the Lnte John Phlntzy, the
Oldest Graduate of the University.
From the Augusta. Os., Chronicle.
At the advanced age of ninety-one years,
five months and twenty-seven days,, this
venerable and highly esteemed citizen, who
was born in the county of Oglethorpe, iu this
state, on the 7th day of Jauuarv, 1793, passed
quietlv away from earth on ton 4th inat., at
10 o???cfock a. m., surrounded by his sorrowing
family. The scenes that have so long known
him will know him no more forever! In the
fullness of years, after an active, useful career,
distinguished by unfaltering energy, earnest
purpose, resolute will and great success, he
sleeps with his fathers. It is men of his strong
mould and iron will, l??oru on her soil and
growing up with her, as it
were, that have given to Georgia that
sterling and proud character that has won for
her the renowned niche she occupies in the
temple of the great sisterhood of states. There
was a robustness of personal manhood in all
the qualities of physical activity, intellectual
strength and indomitable will of Mr. Phinizy,
that gave to him a marked individuality that
won lil have made him a man of note and con
trolling in Hue nee iu any community where his
lot may have been cast. Hut nujwrMddcd to
all these personal qualities and elements of
success, Air. 1???hiuizy was a gentleman of fine
education and general culture. He
graduated with distinction at the
Htatc university in the class of 1811,
when be was only 18 years of age. When ho
i eight years old he removed from ( ???
rpe to this city, and here his long and
ntful life has been spent. Few men have
done more for the substantial development of
solid business and financial growth bears
the impress of his energy nnd ever active,

THE BUSINESS OF THE SOUTH.
The Outlook of Iltislneaaaa Reported by

While the failures for the first half of lfrit In the
United States are only 18 percent more than for
the corresponding period of the year before, yet
the liabilities for the same period are nearly dou

steady a strain extend over a period so long, dur

have occurred, accompanied by a depreciation

a purely financial (mint of view, os exemplified
by the operations iu AYall street and their

Ciunuxro.H. s. C.???The prospect In this section,
notwithstanding the present financial stringency,
are cucoureging. Reports from the Interior re-
present the cotton crop In go??Hl condition, though
retarded by the unfavorable sprliiR. There has
been a good yield of wheat, and the oat crop
has been above the average. The rice crop, ex

from present outlook, will be considerably less
than heretofore. Our lumber trade has greatly In
creased, faith In domestic and foreign demand.
Owing to (mrtlal failure of cotton crop last year,
most of the interior merchants have had to ask
accommodations, bnt strict economy has been
