The Manufacturer???s Gazette, gives a valuable
rdcipe for building up the system, physically
aid mentally, during the heated term. Take
S bonate of ammonia,one drachm^ loaf sugar,
n arabie, equal quantities; dissolve in
twenty-four ounces of water, let it stand twen
ty-four hours, and then filter. This mixturo
will keep fivfc years. A man who does men
tal labor and feels exhausted will find a wine-
glassful of this mixture two or three times a
day in half a glass of water an agreeable
stimulant. It has more actual stimulating
property than the same amount of French
brandy, and its effects ore permanent, with
out any reaction. It is good for consumptives
and the weakest invalids. Its cost is next to
notbirg, and it Is in itself food and can bo
given in a form more or lets concentrated or
diluted, os tho occasion requires. People who
are in the habit of using liquor prefer this
mixture after they have once used it.
Bows of the newspaper wits speak of the
prohibition presidential nomination as the
Biblical ticket. So far as names go S*. John
and Daniel certainly have a very respectable
sound. It is impertinently suggested by a
malicious opponent of the ticket that the orig
inal St. John was a little remiss in failing to
cbject to the turning of water into wine, and
the point is also made that while Daniel was
saved from destruction in the den of lions
it was his own virtue and not legislative en-
ietmenl that saved him. The prohibitionists,
Recent figures show that tho consumption
of liquor in the United States has far outstrip
ped the growth of population. The number of
gallons of liquor consumed yearly .siuce 1840
lias increased as follows; 1840, 71,000,000;
1850, 04,000,000; 1800, 202,000,000; 1870, 233,-
000,000; 1880, 500,000,000; 1883, 055,000,030.
While the population has only trebled in tho
last forty years, the consumption of intoxicants
is nearly ten times greater than it was in 1840,
and tho amount of money expended in the
purchase thereof is twenty or 'thirty times
greater. Our annual expenditure for liquor
now exceeds $800,000,000.
A newspaper man who has boon studying
tho condition of tho French pays that they livo
on cereals, whereas the English live'on meat.
One*pound of dry wheat or Hour will go ns
far as three pounds of meat. If you feed tho
cereals to cattle, as they do in England, it will
take 8 pounds of grain to make a pound of
meat. One acre of cereals in France will sup
port fivo men, while it takes two acres of
grass to support ono steer,
and in ???the end ouo man ea's
the steer. Tho Frenchman buy millions o
gallons of cotton-seed oil and cats it in his
salads and soups. He refines millions of gal
lons and sells it back to America at two or
threo dollars a gallon. Cotton-seed oil has
been found to be better and cheaper than
peanut and olive oil. Thcro is not a mouth
ful of meat orgreaso thrown away in Frauc3,
and a population of 103,000,000 can bo sup
ported better iu that country than a popula
tion of 25,000,000 can be supported in Eng

A van named Benedick, who has recently
escaped from the Sandwich islands, makes tin
startling statement that fully 80,000 American
citizens are held in bondago on thoso islands.
Benedick says that ho was engaged at 8-jn

at $50 a month. When ho landed ho was
placed in a pen with hundreds of men and
women, and the next day the planters came
In, picked out their laborers and
Ecnt them to tho field under
guard. It was useless to protest. Thoy fouud
that they were expected to go to work at fifty
cents a ???day. They were docked without mercy
and fined every time they took a chew of to
bacco. At- tho end of the month, Benedick
was informed that he was $133 in debt to his
employer, and a contract wos shown him with
his name forged to it binding him to servo two
years. Fortunately Benedick had $503 con
cealed on his person. With $400 ho succeeded
in buyiug his liberty, and at onco returned to
San Francisco. If ho tells the truth, an odi
ous and oppressive system of slavery exists iu
the Sandwich Islands.

A nrsnixc circle has been organized in
Noitb Carolina, composed of intelligent people

Eoutbern educators have been requested to

with suggestive hints and criticisms. Blanks
containing questions concerning tho books in
the course will be furnished, to bo filled out,
so that a board of examiners may tost tho
thoroughness of tho reading. Certificates and
prizes are to bo awarded those maintaining a

the course. This is tho first attempt in t???

income of $240 a mouth, has been .convicted of
vagrancy in San Francisco. Fending an ap

ho be allowed to givo $500 cash bail. Tho re

Tub Chicago papers havo been unable to
ascertain why cx Governor Moses, of South
Coiolino, is wanted in Massachusetts, but the
Boston Advertiser gives the whole story. It
seems that last April a stranger called on
Colonel T. W. Higgiuson, in Boston, repre
senting himself as J. D. Bryan, tho corporation
counsel of Charleston, S. C. Ho stated that
he had been robbed of his pockotbook and
wanted to borrow money to take him homo.
Iligginson let him have $34. Tho stranger
then called on ex-Mayor Green, representing
himself as a South Carolina lawyer, named
Middleton. Making tho same representations
to Mr. A. Williams, bo succeeded iu borrow
ing $10. IIo also in tho same way obtained
$40 from another gentleman. This is why
Moses has been invited to return to Boston in
tho custody of an officer.
A close student of our criiniual statis ica
cannot avoid the conclusion that assassination
has developed into a national crime. Within
less than a quarter of a century two presidents
of tho United States have been assassinated,
and every year swells the number of victims.
Almost every morning tho daily papers con
tain accounts of cold-blooded assassinations
In every section of tho coun
try. Thero ia no exemption
on account of ago and sox or tho rank and
condition of the victims. This brutal crimo Is
as likely to occur in tho moat peaceful rural
region as in the most populous city. Even
hero in Georgia several defenceless women
havo boon murdered within the past month or
two. Tho revival of the worst criiniual meth
ods of tho dark ages suggests much that is
perplexing and inexplicable. Tho old belief
that murder will out is losing ground. Eithor
the i ssassins are shrewder than formerly, or
tho detectives are more stupid. At any rato
it must be admitted that many murderers sue-
coo 1 in remaining not only unpunished but
unknown.
The point is made that if cholera were ni
common ns consumption it would attract as
little notice. Its rare appenraneo and its
mysterious work cause people to regard it with
four. Consumption is morc^destructivo- than
cholera and is always wither, killing annually
its tens and perhaps hundreds of thousands.
Epidemics do not greatly ruise tho rato of mor

c,v< ry year, and during an epidemic thero is
generally n dccrcaso in tho deaths from ordi

Oxr. of the republican objections to Grovor
Cleveland is the fact that he once held th#
office of sheriff???. Without dwelling upon tho
natural dread of a sheriff generally felt by the
average republican, it is worthy of note that
the office of sheriff is highly honorable and of
great dignity. In old times tho sheriff war a

hereditary high sheriffs of Westmoreland and
the office was once held by
Annie, countess of Pembroke. This
noble lady discharged her duties in pefton,

bench. In England the sheriff is responsible
to the crowu. He alone is the custodian of the
"pcsiccomitatus." Formerly all jailers were
