Bbooklyk, September 14.???[Special.]???Dr.
Talmage preached to-day to aa immense
throng in the Brooklyn tabernacle. The
crowds of strangers coming to the church are all
the time increasing, owing to the fact that Dr.
Talmoge???s sermons are now regularly published
in seven different languages. A great many
foreigners pass from the European-, steamers,
which land on Sabbath morning directly to the
church doors. Before the sermon to-day Dr.
Talmage explained appropriate passages of
scripture, and gave out the hymn:
??? 'Mid scenes ol confusion
And creature complaints,
How sweet to my soul
Is commuulon of saints.???
which was sung to the tune of ???Home, Sweet
Home." The subject of the sermon was ???The
present epidemic of swindle among trust
funds," and the text was taken from Revela
tions xviii. 17: ???In ono hour so groat riches
are come to naught." Following is the ser
mon in full:
The columns of our custom houses and the
atate capitol swathed???in black, and all the flags
at half mast for tho dead United States treas
urer. A man at CO dies without one spot upon
his name, though the most ot the time passed
amid temptations that have flung flat a great
multitude. Amid all the allurements of tho
legal profession, and amid all the opportunity
for bribe-taking on the judicial bench aud
finally holding the puree of this nation for
three years, yet not a half penny of others
sticking to his hand. And in his dying hour
he asked his attendant to tako from tho left
hand pocket of his coat a check and get it
cashed, so that by his own hand all tho ex
penses of his own obsequies were met, paying
his way all through life by hard work, and
even paying his admission fee at the gates of
the sepulchre. All his accounts square with
the United States government, and squaro
with the world, and square with God. what
a glorious background to the picture of tho
present epidemic of swindle among trust
lands.
There has not been a time in my memory
or yourt when the utter and black irresponsi
bility of so many men having the financial
interests of others in charge has been mado
evident. The unroofing of banks and dis
appearance of administrators with tho funds
of large'estates, and the disorder amidst post-
office accounts and deficits amid United Slates
officials have mado a pestilence of crime that
solemnises every thoughtful man and woman
and leads every philanthropist and Christian
to ask: What shall be doue to stay thopla$uoT
There is a monsoon abroad, a typhoon, a siroc
co. Things in this regard are worse and
worse. I sometimes . ask myself if it would
not bo better for men making wills to boqueath
tbe property directly to tho oxccutorsand offi
cers of the court, and appoint the widows aud
orphans a committee to see that tho former got
all that did not belong to them. The simplo
fact is that thero is a largo number of men
Bailing yachts and driving fast horses and
members of expensive club houses, and con
trolling country scats who arc not worth a dol
lar if tney return to others their just rights.
Under somo sudden reverse they fail and wi h
afflicted air seem to retlro from the world and
seem almost rcadr for monastic life, whon in

having compromised with their creditors, that

S rcdcccMors, and instead of ono country seat
ley havo three. I have watched and 1 have
noticed that nine out of ten of those who fail
iu what is called high lifo, have more means
after than bciore tbe failure, and in many of
tho coses failure is only a stratagem to escape
the payment of honest dobts, and put the
world off the track while they practice a larger
swindle. Thero is something woefully wrong
in the fact that these things are possible.
First of all, I chargo tho blaino on ???careless,
Indifferent bank directors and boards having
in charge great financial institutions. It ought
not to be possible fora president or cashier
or prominent officer of a banking institution
to swindle it year after year without detection.
I will undertake to say that if these frauds aro
carried on for two or three years without de
tection, either the directors aro partners in tho
infamy end pocketed part of the theft or thoy
ere guilty of a culpable neglect of duty for
which Ood will hold them as responsible as
He hol^s the acknowledged defrauders. What
right have prominent business men In New
York and Brooklyn to allow their names to be
published as directors in a financial institu
tion so that unsophisticated pcoplo aro thereby
induced to deposit their money in it, or buy
the scrip thereof when they, the published di
rectors, are doinfg nothing for tho safoty of tho
institution? It is a cue of deception most rep-
jehensible. Many people with a surplus or
money not needed for immediate use, although
it may be a little further on indispensable, are
without friends competent to advise them, and
they are guided solely by the character of tho
men whose names are associated with tho in-
dilution. When tho crash camo and with
overthrow of tbe banks went the small earn
ings and limited fortunes of widows and or
phans and the helplessly aged, tho directors
stood with idiotic stare, aud to tbe inquiry of
lhe frenzied depositors and stockholders who
had lost their all and to the arraignment of
an indignant public, had nothing to say ex
cept: ???We thought it was all right. Wo did
not know that there was anything wrong go
ing on." It was their duty to know. They
stood in a position which deluded the people
with the idea that they were carefully observ
ant. Calling themselves directors they did
not direct. They bad opportunity of audit
ing the accounts and inspecting the book. No
time to do so? Tfeen they had no business to
accept the position. It seems to be the pride
of moneyed men to be directors in a great many
institutions, and all they know about what is
going on is whether or not they get their div
idends regularly. And their names are used as
decoy ducks to bring others near enough to bo
made gsme of. What first of all is needed is
that 5,000 bank directors and insurance com
pany directors resign or attend to their busi
ness as directors. The business world will be
full of fraud just as long as fraud is so easy.
When you arrest president an*secretary of a
lank for embezilement carried for many
years, have plenty of sheriffs oub the sama >
3oy to arrest ail the directors. They are
guilty either of neglect or complicity.

debt of England; bank of Scotland, founded
1695; bank of Ireland, 1783; bank of North
America, planned by Robert Morris, 1781,
without whose financial help all tho bravery
of our grandfathers would not have achieved
American independence. But now we havo
banks in all our cities and towns, thousands
on thousands. On their shoulders aro the ne
cessities of private Individuals, and great cor-
porations. In them are tho great arteries
through widen run the currents of tho na
tion's life. They havo been the rescuers of
thousands of financiers in days of business
exigency. They stand for accommodation, for
facility for individual, state and national re
lief. At their head, and in their management
there is as much integrity and moral worth as
in any class of men, and perhaps more. How
nefarious then the behaviour of those who
bring disrepute upon this venerablo, benig
nant and God-honored institution.
Wc also deplore recent events, because thoy
fly iu the face of that divino goodness, which
seems determined to bless this laud. Wo aro
having the fourth year of unexampled nation
al bar rests, the last loads of tho greatest of
them just passing the garner. Tho wheat
gamblers got hold of the wheat, and tho corn
gamblers got hold of the corn, and tho biggest
excitement of last week in Wall street, I am
told, wos in regard to this latter crop, tho fato
of which will be decided by tho next week???s
continued heat or sudden frost. Tho full tido
of God???s mercy towards this land is put back
bv these great dykes of dishonest resistance.
When God .provides enough food and clothing
to feed and apparel this whole nation liko
princes, the scrabble of dishonest mon to got
more than their share, and get it at all haz
ards, keeps everything shaking with uncer
tainty, and everybody asking, what' next?
Every week makes new revelations. How
many moro bank presidents and bank cashiers
have been speculating with other people???s
money, and now many moro bank directors
ore in imbecile silenco letting the perfidy go
on, tho great and patient God only knows.
My opinion is that we have got near tho bot
tom. This has been the most valuable sum
mer for ten years. The wend has been pricked
Irom the great bubble of American specula
tion. The men who thought that the judg
ment day was at least 5,000 years off, found it
in tho summer of 1884, and this nation has
been taught that mon must keep
their hands out of other peoples
pockets. Great businesses, built on
borrowed capital, have been obliterated;
and men who bad nothing havo lost all they
had. At ten o???clock in the morning of tbo
first Wednesday in next November tho com
mercial prosperity of this country will bogin
another ascendant, and for a grander and
longer career than anything ever known or
imagined if, and.if, and if.
If tho first! men, and especially Christian
men will learn never to speculate upot^ bor
rowed capital. If you havo a mind to tako
your own money and turn it all into kites and
fly them over every commons in tho Unitod
States > you do society no wrong, except when
you tumble your helpless children into tho
poorhouse for tho public to take caro of. But
you have no right to take the money of others
and turn it into kites. Thero is ono word that
has deluded more people into bankruptcy and
state prison and pedition than any other word
in commercial lire, and that is tho word ???Bor
row." That one word is responsible for all
tbe defalcations and ctftbezslomonts and finan
cial consternations of tho lost four month*, and
of the last ferty. When executors coneludo to
speculate with tho funds of an estate commit
ted to their chargo thoy do not purloin; they
say they only borrow. When a bankor makes
an over-draft upon his institution ho does not
commit a theft, he only borrows. When tho
officer of a company by flaming advertisement
in some religious paper and gilt certificate of
stock gets a multitude of country people to put
their small earnings into an enterprise tor car
ry on some undeveloped nothing, ho does not
fraudulently take their money; ho only bor
rows. When a young man with easy access
to his employer's money draw, or the confi
dential clerk by close proximity to tho aceonnt
books takes allow dollars for a Wall street ex
cursion, he expects to nnt it back; he will put
it all back; ho will put it back vory soon* Ho
only borrows. What is needed is some man of
gigantic limb to tako his placo at tho curb
stone in front of Trinity church, and whon
that word Borrow comos bounding along, kick
it clean through to Wall street ferryboat, and
it, striking on that, it bound* clear over till it
strikes Brooklyn Heights or Brooklyn Hill, U
will be well for the city of churches. Why,
when you are going to do wrong, pronounce in
such hot weather so long a word as Borrow, a
word of six letters, wheu you can get a shorter
word, a word more accurate, a word moro di-
scriptivc of reality, a word of only fivo letteis,
the word steal.
There are times when we all borrow, and
borrow legitimately, and borrow with tho do-
vine blcising, for Christ in his sermon on tho
mount enjoins ???from him that would borrow
of thee turn not thou away." A young man
rightly borrows money to get his education.
Purchasing a houso and not able to pay all
down in cash, the purchaser rightly borrows it
on mortgage. Crises come in business, whon
it would bo wrong for a roan not to borrow.
But I roll this warning through all these aisles
and over tbe backs of all these pears, never
borrow to speculate; not a dollar, not a cent,
not a farthing. Young man, as you value
your worldly prospects, and as you value your
Immortal soul, don???t do it. There are on dif
ferent sides of the ocean breakers famous for
shipwrecks, the lines of rocks called ???tho
Manways," the Needles, the Casquets, tho
Douvrcs, the Andcrlot. But there is a reef of
rocks worse then the llatiways, the Needles,
the Casquets, tbe Douvrcs, the Anderlos, all
combined, and they point the sea of commer
cial life, north, south, east, west, with the
white foam of their detraction, and the dirge
of their despair???the breakers of borrow. Ir I
had only a worldly weapon with which to
warn you back, I would tell you what I havo
freah from the highest authority???that 90 per
cent of all who go into Wall street specula
tions fail utterly. But I have a mighty wea
pon, snd that is a religious one. From the
place where so many nave perished, body,
mind and soul, keep off! Our pulpit obstruc
tions must stand aside. Repentance and faith
are no more doctrines of the Bible than ???ren
der to all their dues," ???owe no man any
thing." And while I preach more and more,
as 1 hope to, tbe necessity of repentance and
faith, lam going to stop chasing the Hittitos,
and Jebuaites, and Gergasbites, of olden time,
and give more time to chasing down modern
evils that are drowning men and women for
both world*. Tbe most evangelistic preacher
tbe world ever saw, a man who died for his
evangelism, Paul, the peerless, said to the
Romans: ???Provide things honest in the sight
being liberally
transited means that if your lifo does not cor
respond Mb your profession your religion fa

ds of year;. Two hundred I Saturday and Monday aa on the day between
end not be a mere periphrasis of sanctity. It
ought first to moke clean our heart and then
make clean our life. Religion is not, as many
suppose, a matter of church delectation, a sort
of confectionery, a spiritual caramel or holy
gum-drop, or sanctified peppermint or theo
logical anaesthetic, but an omnipotent princi
ple, all-pervading, all-controlling, nil-con
quering. With something short of that you
may deceive yourself, but you can???t deceivo
God, and you can???t deceive the world. Tho
keen roan o! the world puts on his spoctacjea
and looks clean through the back of your head
and knows whether your religion is a fiction
or a fact. And you cannot hide the deceptions'
of your camples of sugor or coffee, or rieo or
tea with the cloth of a [communion table.
All your, prayers go for nothing.
As long as you misrepresent your banking in
stitution, and put iu your report of its re
sources more specio and more fractional cur
rency and moro clearing houso certificates and
more legal tender notea and more United
Slates certificates of deposit and moro loans
aud discounts than there really are, and
among your liabilities do not make proper
mention of dividends unpaid and national
bank notes outstanding and individual do-
E osits and what is due to state banks and
ankers.
1 have also a word of comfort for all who
suffer from the malfeasance of others, and
every honest mon, woman and child docs sut
ftr Irom what goes on in financial scatnpdom,
Society is so bound together that all the mis
fortunes which good people suffer iu business
matters come from tho misdeeds of others.
Bear up under distress, strong in God. He
will see you through, though your misfortunes
should be centupled. Philosophers tell us
that a column of air forty-five miles in height
rests on every man???s head and shouldors. But
that is nothing compared with tbe pressure
that business life has put upon many of you.
God made up his rninu long ago how many or
how few dollars it would bo best for you to
have. Trust to His apportionment. Tho door
will soon open to let you out and let you up.
What shock of delight for men who for thirty
years havo been in business anxiety, when
they shall suddenly awakoin everlasting holi
day. On the maps of tho Arctic regions thero
arc two places whoso names aro remarkable,
given I supposo by some Polar oxpodition,
???Capo Farewell" and ???Thank God Ilarbor."
At this last the Polaris wintered in 1871, and
tho Tigress in 1873.8ome ships???havo passed tho
Capo, yet never reached harbor. But irom
what I know of manysof you I have concluded
that though your voyage of life may be vory
rough, run into by icebergs on this sido and
icebergs on that, you will in duo time reach
Cape Farewell, and there bid good-byo to all
annoyances and soon after drop anchor in the
darkly impcrturbablo waters of Thank God
Harbor,
THE STATE FAIR.
President Livingston, of the Georgia Agri
cultural Society, Has a Word to Say*
KniTons Constitution: Permit me, through
your extensively circulated Journal, to say a few
things to tho citizens of Georgia in rcfcrcnco to
the approaching fair to bo held In Macon October
27 to November 2.
The officers of the society havo and are doing
all In their power to make tho fair a decided suc
cess. A premium list has been arranged, offering
as liberal inducements ns they can to exhibitors,
arranging their premiums according to the valuo
and importance ol the articles, and will make all
awards on a fair and just basis. These premium
lists have been well distributed, but if nnyouo
wishing to exhibit has not received one. they can
do to by writing K. C. Grier, secretary. Macon, Go.
The grounds and buildings tor cxhibltiou are as
neat and convenient aa any iu the southern states,
and are now being repaired and improved by tho
mayor and council of Macon at tho expenso of
tho city. But when all this shall have been done,
Georgia mourn laacan active interest iu u. uoin
in contributing to the display and by attendance.
Without tbe former than* will not be much to be
I teen, snd without the latter the display would
avail but little. It should take but a small
measure of public spirit to Induce every person
living In Georgia to help in somo way towards
1 making a creditable showing, and whon each and
every one Interested, or to be benefited by the fair,
thus lends a helping hand, It is au cosy matter to
have a successful exhibition. This state fair will
perhaps be the only chance, soon, to advertise
Georgia and her productiveness; for wo wuit ro
man her that our legislature refused to appropriate
money cither for the exhibition at Boston or
Louisville last year, aud neglected to do so for tho
???World???s Industrial Cottou Centennial Exposi

while other southern states did so last your,
nml are doing so on a largo acalo for tho
New Orleans exposition, and unless wo change our
state policy, as to advertising abroad or so display
our advantages, iu cllmutc and productions at
home so that those who come among us may ho
informed, we will very soon no longer lay claim to
bc-ingttbe ???empire atate of tho south.??? Tho re
sults of the state fair will be of tho most benefi
cial character to Georgians in Introducing a nat
ural and healthy competition Jn our industries in
stimulating our people to more careful and judi
cious work, In imparting new Ideas and useful in*
fonnatlon In regard to mattera of tho farm aud
household, Many other benefits Indirectly arUo
from such exposition*, such as tho promotion of
social Intercourse among a class of people wham
occupations too often keep them strangers to each
other. My object In this communication
Is to beg tbe good people of Georgia to contribute
to the display in some department, and feci an In
dividual rtkponidbity for Its success. Kncourago
It at least by your attendance and by a manlfe*lo
tion of interest In the productions of tho Industry
of others. Every tiling that can lie done to obtain
low rates on tbe railroads, Is being done. Tho cit
izens of Macon are doing ail In their power to ac
comodate visitors while In attendance. Every
Now, bt it be ??aid of Georgia, that from whatever
cause she has failed to go abroad with a display of
her industries, she is not too Indifferent to her
own Interest: not void of that state pride, nor too
selfish to gather every evidence of her greatness
and her clergies in tno varied Indus trios within
her limits, concentrate them at her fair and show
to ourselves and the world that Instead of growing
poorer erery day, wean marching on to Independ
ence and success. L. F. Livingston.
