for a few days the refreshing coolncsa of ltv shady
groves and the hospitality of the good citizens, I
give you some impressions formed, and a few
items gleaned from an extended tour of the east
ern portion of North Carolina, from which I have
recently returned.
Asa matter of course, the political situation,
l>oth local aud national, is the all-absorbing topic
of interest in that state just now.
These w ho would class North Carolina among
the doubtful states are certainly misinformed.
From all I saw and learned, and I took the pains
to investigate, that question is not a debatable
one, and as result* will show, North Carolina will
give a good majority to Cleveland and Hendricks.
While in Wilmington, I had the pleasure of bear
ing a very aide addresa of some two
hours length, ' from Gdternor Jarvis,
embracing both local and national issues.
And though a synopsis even of hla speech would
be out of place be-re. Dure was one point of ua-
tionsl interest which may be worthy of mention.

Truths Plainly and Tersely Told???lie Treats
of Patriotism.
From the Southern Cultivator.
Patriotism is a liring principle. It 1* born In a
man and he can't help it. The Ignorant and hum-
Ue have got it as well as the learned and great,
have heard folks say that oar soldiers didn???t fight
from principle or patriotism in the last war, bat
w ere dragged Into it from outside pressure and force
of circumstance*. Well, some of them were, of
course ; for some folks are uot born to fight, hut
all of them wanted the flgbt to saccccd. It is cu
rious bow oar patriotism weakens os it spreads.
How interne is our love of home, the sacred spot
where we live and have shelter and where our cas
tle is; for Black stone rays that a man's home Is
bis castle, and let no man dare
to approach It with evil iuient.
A roan feels braver at home than anywhere, aud
even a coward will fight within his own cuciovure.
From there his patriotism spreads out to bis
naborhcod, bis settlement, his district.' bis boat.
The original Kill Arp used ta say, ???if Ban McGin
nis conus up here outen his beat and into my beat
and dares me to hit him. 1 am gwino to bit bim if
it's the last lick I ever strike.??? Next comcj our
comity pride: and itfs a perilous business fora
crowd of boys to ??o over their county lino
and put on airs and swell arouud in another
county. Then there is a state pride that every
body feels, and It never dies out; for though a
Georgian may move to the far west and adopt a
new mother, he ucver forgets the home of his
youth, end thinks of her with pride and affection.
Then comes the patriotism of the south as
gfon, or of the north, or (he cast, or tho \v??wt

ray with pride and exultation, and his p.itri itlsin
takes in all that region which lies south of Masou
