A NOTABLE WORK.

VISIT WORTH HIS WHILE.
The Pendleton Guano Work*-An Interesting Histo
ry of a Great Enterprise-How Pertllisera Are
The Constitution has never failed to place
a proper valuation on all important enterprises
started in Atlanta and Georgia. And this idea
suggests itself most forcibly in making men*
tionof the really meritorious work of the
Pendleton Guano Company. There is not a
parallel to their success in the south, and it is
i like a credit to them and to Georgia that their
entire capital aud officers are strictly Georg
ians. They have worked with Georgia material,
Georgia brains and Georgia pluck, and have
accomplished much that is valuable and inter
esting.
Dr. E. M. Fendleton, who died this year,
experimented more than any agricultural
chemist in tho country, especially in reference
o the chemical requisites of the cottou plant
and their deficiency in tho soils of the south.
He practiced medicine aud planted for over
thirty years in Hancock county, Ga., where
c< miner rial fertilizers were first used in tho
slate. Hence he was called to fill the chair
??>f agriculture in the state university at Ath
ens, where, as there was no such thing in ex
istence at tho time, he wrote tho first tfext
book on scientific ngriciflturo ever written in
the English language. It was
adopted*by a number of agricultural colleges
north and couth, and his publishers, A. 8.
Fames k Co. { New York, said it passed tho
icvcrest criticisms of northern scientists with
out unfavorable comment. While at Athens
he had charge of tho experimental farm, his
annual reports from which, delivered before
the state agricultural society, have perhaps
done more than any other ono thing to place
Georgia in advance of all tho states in tho uso
of commercial fertilizers.
thk formula
for thcPcndlcton Ammoniutcd Superphosphate
was first tested in 1809, and has been used
ever since, with only such variations os be
come necessary, from tho exhaustion of some
of the old ingredients and introduction of new
ones. Dr. Pendleton originated his formula
in the effort to mnko a substitute for Peruvian
gunno???as he foresaw that tho Chincha isle3
would coon be exhausted???and claims to bo
the first to use animol matter on cotton
ns an ammoniate. Tho only secret in
its composition Is the selection of such
nmmoniates, phosphates and alkalies as will
adapt themselves to tho largest diversity of
soils and the greatest variety of seasons in tho
production ol cotton and tho ccrctls. After
ir-orc than thirty years experience in the prac
tical details of agricultural chemistry as aj>

to the former, in that it goes farther, has no
lumps, and is easily distributed. Our Brand
is one of the oldest in tho United 8tatcs, and
the average commercial value or tlio super
phospbote is higher ihan any sold."
In the works, on tho cars, in fact every-
where, as tho reporter wended his way
through the huge building, and other valu-
oblo ingredient, immense piles of
animal and mineral bone wAre seen. It is ono
of the few factories in the United States using
pure animal bone. This is one of tho
reasons that it stands at tho
head , of tho both as to
commercial value and as a fertilizer. They
get more ior it than any other.
The company has an elegant stiito of offices
on tho second floor of the Gate City National
bank building, Mr. Chos. K. Maddox, tho
secretary have charge of the books,
etc. Altogether tho company as
has already bccu stated, is an honor to
Georgia enterprises, standing as it docs, ahead
of everything elso of a similar kind in the
country.

plieable to the productions, climate and soils
of the south, ho oilers theso facts as tho result
of his investigations.
Dr. Pendleton???s textbook was published in
America and Europe, and for years has been
the leading light in agricultural chemistry.
The formula ho used was first manufactured
by contract in Baltimore, but failing to make
a financial success of it tncro, it was proposed
to establish a small factory in Georgia. This
was accordingly done, and the venture proved
a success from the start. Four years ago a
joint stock company was formed. The eapital
is now $105,000, with $38,000 surplus, giving
an actual working capital oi $143,000.
The cfficcrs ol the company are as follows
Mr. Wm. M. Pendleton, presidont and
manager; Mr. Ed. A. Wcrnor, treasurer Chos,
K. Maddox, secretary and Dr.
P. T. Pendleton, chemical director
???the latter succeeding to tho position oc??
cupied by his father. Mr. Wm. M. Pendloton.

HlQ^.worUs ot Clifton station, throo milos
???"""from Atlanta on tho Georgia roilroad, was his
own architect, raado his' own drawings and
selected, personally, all tho ponderous ma
chinery.
These works aro, probably tlio most completo
in the country. A few doyi ago in company
with Mr. William M. Pendleton, a Constitu
tion man visited them, and had his oyes
opened at their immensity. Thcro are com
paratively few people in tho stato who know
how extonsive theso works aro. That they
arc a monument to tho enterprise of the pro
motei? needs no further indorsement than tho
mere statement of tho fact. The grounds on-
cdoied cover six ocros, tho main building be
ing 400 by 100 feet, with three stories and c
basement, tho ontiro amouut of floor space be
ing no let3 than 60,000 square feet or noarly
two solid acres.
THE MACHINERY.
Tho moebinery used In manufacturing the
Pendleton fertilizers forms a most interesting
sight. A Babcock A Wilcox eafctyboilcrlSO horso
power is used, and a massive 100 horse (tower
engine. Long lines of shafting and bcltiug
ore connected with tho engine which draws
two immense iron mills for grinding
animal bone exclusively; oue iron and four
sets of 48-inch under-run burr stones for grind
ing mineral bone; an immenso disintegrator,
for disintegrating the guano after it is mixed,
thus getting it tree from lumps, and putting
it in a marketable condition; two largo hop
pers for sacking 1,500 two-hundrca-pomnl
racks per day; one hugo Poolo k Hunt???s
No. 1 iron mixer, for mixing
tie different ingredients of tho
guano, and numberless elevators, belts, etc.,
connecting the most ponderous coinbinatiou
machinery in Gcorgio. Besides All theso
modern labor-saving contrivances there is a
big steam hoist, which lifts ton upon ton of
the material frpin floor to floor. There is also
a pair of Fairbanks's car scales of 80,000
pounds capacity for weighing car-load lots,
and a side track several hundred feet long,
holding 12 to 15 cars, owned by the company.
There is on immenso iron bucket on tho
track, used for depositing the fertiliser on tho
cars, and for depositing the material any whero
in the building. Tho company owns its own
machine shops, where all the repairing is
done, and where much of the machinery,
under the guidance of skilled machinists, was
made.
Thk Constitution man stood and watched
these hugh machines do their work
with the strength of levialhrns. Animal
bone and mineral bone, the latter as
hard as iron ore, are ground
and crushed into powder without the slightest
apparent loss of power or exertion. It is an
tire process of making the fertilizers. The re
porter could but admire the excellent arrange
ment of everything so perfect in detail and to
certain in the accomplishment of results de-
w sired. Mr. Pendleton has only added an ad-
~ ditional section to tho monument commenced
by his father, in the success of theso works.
Ills success is a notable event in Georgia en
terprises, and it will be years before its equal
is erected. The sagacity h: has shown is un
usual in a mon of his years, und it is a pleas
ure for The Constitution to note his triumph.
Air. Pendleton was asked

What Magnus k Hightower, the Live Young
Druggists, re Doing.
It is a fact much noticed of late years that
seme of the strongest firms of Atlanta are run
and owned by young men. Indeed those men
who bnvo done most to make tho city what
she is to-day, who havo lent their energies,
their talents and brain towards building up
her reputation, hove for the most part been
men comparatively young in years.
I.ers thon a year ago Messrs. Magnus k
Hightower bought out Dr. J. II. Br&dfield???s
drug business. It is a pleasure to note that they
have,by dint of hard work and keen business
rapacity, built up a trade of which older houses
might well be proud. They hove made tho
corner of Pryor and Decatur famous. In a
conversation with Mr. Moguus, Thb Consti
tution asked:
???How are you pleased with your outlook????
???Well, wo ore satisfied with our surround
ings and prospects. We commenced hero on
an ample capital and have gradually en
larged our business until now not mnuy dtug

???Do you do a jobbing trade????
???Yes, we have a good jobbing trade which
is constantly growing better. Wo do a very
handsome Lusiness outsido of Atlanta.???

The manufacture of brooms has so seldom
been made a success in the south that Tns
Constitution notes with an immenso degree
of pride the splendid work done at tho factory
of Logan Brothers of this city. It is a remark
able fac|, aud one worth considering
l connection with the work of tho
Messrs. Logan, that no less than a dozen
more broofn factories havo boon started in At
lanta within a few years past, and uono of
them proved permanent successes. However,
by dint oi au immense amount of energy, aud
with proper facilities, the Logan factory has
been made a complete success every way, and
has now established itself as one oi the strong
est enterprises of Atlanta. Aud it becomes
still more important when the fact is known
that tor the space covered, this
tho largest broom factory in tho world. By
this is meant the amount of work dono in tho
f irescnt building. Whilo its capacity is not
nrge it is so filled with men mid hand ma
chines os to render walking through for a look
a most difficult undertaking. The factory is
in tho old No. 4 engino houso, on Foundry
street, near Marietta; many who read this
will remember its size. In this small space
tho factory works over 40 hands and turns out
over 100 dozen brooms per day. This is really
an immense work, everything considered.
To a representative of Thk Constitution
who called at tho factory yesterday on his

???In Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina,
principally. Wo havo only recently added

very heavy stock of theso goods, with tlio

this line.???
It would bo idling words to speak of tho
popularity of theso young gentlemen. They
???re well known to everybody in
Atlanta, and have deservedly merited tho
confidenre and esteem of all. Their store is
ono of tho hondsomest in the city, and is
stocked always with tho purest drugs, lino
toilet goods, in fact, everything usually kept
in a first- class establishment.
A PECULIAR CHARM.
Wlmfc Constitutes n Chief Item of a Beauti
ful Face.
In society, nt the theater, in privato life, on
the street, In fact any whero and overy whero
pretty teeth attract favorablo attention and
comment. Tho prettiest fnco imaginable is
badly disfigured if the owner is tho possessor
ol cither tnoggled or dirty teeth. In some
eartern countries the greatest sign of a beauti
ful women is black teeth, but among tho peo
ple of n higher civilization, such as inhabit
Europe and America, pearly molars have a
larger sharo of credit in going to
mnko 'personal beauty notiecablq
and attractive than any othor ono item of tho
moke-up of tho toilet.
No Indy???s dressing caso, or for tho inattor
of that,, no gentleman???s is completo without a
???cod teeth cleaner, and to furnish such an ar
ticle tho chemists and druggists of tho world
have worried their icicutific brains for yean,
but it lintt remained for an Atlnntinn to moro
completely till tho desired wont than any
other of tho many manufacturers who have
attempted it.
Decent microscopic examinations havo led
to the discovery that tho matter deposited on
the teeth and gums ot individuals from all
classes of society is an immense -army of ani
mal and vegetable pari.dtcs. This army wages
wor against oil persons at all neglectful with
tho cleanliness of tho teeth. Further re
searches resulted in tho discovery of Jncobs???
teeth dinner, which will effectually arrest tho
destructive work of this army, remove tho
scurf and tartar, harden tho gums and re
store the teeth to their former whiteness and
beauty. This elegantly perfumed preparation
ia refreshingly sgrecablo to tho mouth, and
counteracts tho disagrecoblo odor resulting
from decayed teeth aud the use of tobacco.
Step by step this cleaner has worked
its way to the front among tho
reliable cleaners of tho country
and is being used by thousands in and out of
this immediate district, all of whom express
delight with the preparation and the good re
sults following its use. It is rccommeudcd by
users and by physicians, who know that bail
teeth lead to bad health. If the mouth is full
oi foulness the natural breathing will carry it
to the lungs, which will be affected seriously
end perhaps dangerously, so that it is not only
important from a standpoint of beauty aud
cleanliness, but also from oue of heitlth.
Mr. Jneobs con by the use of his preparation
guarantee oil that ho claims for it, and overy
man, woman and child owes ft
to himtelf to make use of a preparation
such os is hero ottered. The cost is moderate,
only twenty-five cents a bottle and it is for
sale by all druggists' ond fancy goods dealers

Lycett???* Art School.
Although an enterprise started less than a
yenr ago, the Messrs. Lycett have made their
art school an institution which would reflect
credit on o much more pretentious city than
Atlanta. They bare had unusually largo
classes in china decoration, and aro uovr
known ever Georgia almost as widely as in
Atlanta. They havo recently received tho
hundsomest line of fine undecorated china
ever brought south, and cordially invite an
inspection from the ladies of the
city ond those who are visiting
here. Certainly it will repay any ono to visit
their studio. yThey have a beautiful display
of decorated work always on hand. An im
portant fact worthy of note is that they have
their furnace for fixing rhinos adjoining the
studio, something which cannot be found
connected with any studio In the country. It
is a pleasure to note the success of tho Ly-
cetts. end it is only a question when they
will have cue of the finest art schools to be
found in the country.
rounds, gathering information for this great
edition, Mr. Frank Logan, tho originator ot
the work, said:

will nay a good dividend???at least, wo aro
satisfied to think so, and thoso I havo men
tioned have enough faith in it to dovoto our
intiro timo and energies towards making it a
big succec s.???
???Where do you sell your brooms????
???From Virginia to Texas. Wo travel five
or six men, aud can compote with any broom
lactory in tho country. Jt is tho quality of
our work that has made our brooms fatuous.
We do only first-class work, and our brooms
ore now recognized as tho standard raako
wherever they have been introduced. To our
superintendent, Mr. Cashniau, who carao
licro from Toronto, Canada, is duo
(he success of our mochanical
department. Ho was manager thoro for oi
of the largest broom factors in tho country
Dumber of years, llo thoroughly understands
the business and hot mado our brooms equal to
any mado in the world. Wo will class them
with the brooms of any couutry, and are not
afraid of-tho judgment that would bo passed
on them. Mr. Cashman is a refined gentle
man withal, and ha?? the success of our factory
as his highest ambition. When we com
menced hero wo mado threo dozon brooms
daily. We now make, with forty hands, ono
hundred dozen daily, or 14,400 brooms. This
makes tho yearly product of our factory roach
tho enormous number of 4,308,000 brooms
yearly, or enough to givo every mau, woman
and child in tho statca of South Carolina,
Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi a broom
each.???
The process of broom manufacture is a most
interesting ono. Tho Logan factory usos only
tho Lest Tennessee ond western broom
corn, though they buy somo
Georgia corn. The Tennessco corn,
however, is tho finest in the world, and the
iced is sought by all the western and northern
states that grow broom corn for market. Tho
firtt v.f rk in making a broom is to give it a
dipped water bath. It then goes for anothor
night into tho bleaching house, in which is
impended a pot of brimstone, the funios of
which do the bleaching. About a ton of tho
broom corn is used daily at tho Logan factory.
It next goes to tho sizing department, whero
the straw is assorted. Alter this it goes to tho
shaping machines, all worked by hand,
then the finishes put on tho extra
touches, ond tho broom is ready for market.
In finishing a broom, after tho corn is
shaped to the haudlc, it goes through ten or
more diflV rent hands, each one doing his part
to it, including stitching, striping tho ban
dits, cutting oil'the ends and finally lubolling
and lying up in bundles ready for shipment.
This factory makes 25 different kinds of regu
lar brooms aud 25 kinds of whisk brooms,
fliirty-fivc hand machines aroused, also tho
meet important of which is tho self-separator.
The new hurl cutter docs tho work of four
boys, this meaning the cutting of tho corn for
tho process of sizing. The prieo
brooms here ranges from
rents to $0 per dozen, or
from $9.00 to $72.00 per gross.
It would be impossible in an article of this
kind to give a correct Idea of the importance of
this branch of Atlanta???s industries. It is only
nreesrary to state that with such a wide awake,
intelligent president as Mr. Frank U. Logan,
Mr. Taylor, Mr. Cashman and tho others, the
factory is bound to grow to very largo propor
tions. Thk Constitution wishes it unbounded

A GREAT PLASTERING FIRM.
Gomez and Fine, ami Their Fine TYorh???Ar

Some years ago tho plastering of oven the
finest edifices in Atlanta was comparatively
crude. In a word, it was inartistic.
In (recent years, however, a remarkable
improvement in this important branch of
work has been noticed, and not tho interior
workmanship of our buildings will compare
avorably with that of any city in tho land.
It is not saying too much to assert that this
improvement is greatly duo to such men as

Tho plastering, whether plain or ornamen

ALWAYS TIIK VKRY RKST
of its kind. Plastering is an art. It ia just as
much one of tho fine arts as painting is, and
whether tho simplcst-or the most ornato stylo
is employed, utility, comfort aud tho require
ments of beauty demand that tho work shall
bo well done.
Gomes k Pine, from the beginning have made
it a point to uso the best materials and to em
ploy the most skillful workmen. So thorough
ly do they understand their businoss that their
estimates always give satisfaction. They can
figure to a half penny tho cost of any job, and
aro thus enabled to do justice to themselves
and their patrons.
Such substantial edifices as tho now Consti
tution building and the Unto City Bauk build
ing affords abundant evideuco of tho character
of the work done by this enterprising and
thorough-going firm. Scores of our finest
buildings and residences might bo mentioned
In this connection, but it is enough to say that
it is well understood throughout this section
that tho work of Messrs. Goiuez & Pino connot
bo surpassed so far as beauty, durability and
cheapness nro concerned.
It is always the best policy to tnako a fair
contract and in make the work couio up to the
very letter of tho specifications. On this lino
Messrs. Gomez k Pino havo workod from tho
outset, aud tho result is, that tho pooplo havo
perfect confidence in their judgmont and fair
dealing. When a man makes a confract with
them, whether it is for a throo roomed cottage

work will bo dono

that it will look well, wear well, and not cost
him ono cent more than ho would havo to pay

genuine pleasuro to chroniclo tho succoss of
such men. They odd groatly to Atlcnla???s
