rule. Democracy holds to the doctrine of tariff
for revenue with incidental protection. The re
publican party holds to the doctrine of protection
.per se, with incidental revenue. The Morrill tariff
a war tariff. The average duty on fra porta SO per
cent, while the average duty under the Walter
tariff was 2S pei cent. The couutry waa never
more prosperous than under the operation of the
Walker t art IT. 7he revenues of the government
weip ample, commerce, foreign and domestic,
flourished and our currying trade was done by
American vessel*. The tariff commission,' while
It waa a fraud, and gotten up lit the interest of

dent Jefferson Davis wa s being pursued by tho
Vankecshe was tracked to a point about thirteen
miles from the city. He was mounted on a hand
some raddle that hadfbeen presented to him by
admiring friends. It waa handsomely ornamented
with silver work and was valuable. Seeing that
the enemy would secure the saddle he tossed it to
a little boy and asked him if he did not want it
knowing that hi* mother's friends would savo It
for him. Itwaslelt in the boy's.hands and wa*
hidden away. Tho father of the boy afterward
moved to Texas and gave it to Dr. Win. L. Jouo*.

ing was heard of ft until recently tho confederate
chieftain wrote to Judge Howell Cobb, of Athens,
concerning the tracing of It. He wrote to Colonel
John C. Rutherford, of Macon, who placed the
matter In the hands of Mr. Mlnter Wimberly, a
rising ; oung uttorney of this place, who traced it
up and has secured it. It will be in Macon in a
few days and be lorwarded to its owner.
