THE WEEKLY CONSTITUTION. ATLANTA. GA.. TUESDAY OCTOBER 14 1884. TWELVE PAGES. FARMS AND FARMERS. Wok For October.???Continue nil unfinish ed work of last month, and make preparations for regular fall and winter gardening. Clear away all the summer accumulation of weeds, sticks and worthless trash which is too rank to plow under; then turn in all the grass and vegetable matter loft, and apply over this a good, thick coating of some well- tnodo com post. Work in lightly, anti roke, pulverize and level for the seed you are about to Every thing put Into tho ground and properly cultivated during the last two months will now be growing vigorously, and must have con stant care and attention. Lettuce and Endive may bo planted out for a succession. Radishes, spinach and cress should be sown every ten days. Set out bro- coli, cabbage, etc., if not done last month. Sow Early York, Dutch and other cabbago for later winter planting, trying a new plan of dropping two or three seed where you intend your plant to stand, and saving the largest and strongest, instead of Mowing in a bod, the usual way, and transplanting. Sow, also, beets, turnips, carrots, parsnips, mustard, etc. Onions may now be planted. Try genuine Bermuda; also, some of the fine, mild varieties, such a* "Grant's Red Tripoli, 1 "Early Whito Italian Tripoli,??? etc. Strawberry plants may still be sol, and will, under favorable circumstances, yield a crop in the spring, Celery should bo worked carefully, and tie earth drawn up around it, but not when thegrouud is wet. Asparagus and Globo artichoke beds must now be dressed and manured. Peas of tho earliest and finest kind can now be planted. Irish potatoes planted in September should be worked and slightly earthed up. Corn must be gathered and careful!' and cotton picked, ginned, baled ana market. Sugarcane may also bo out and hausted soils, hence the failures that have brought timothy into disrepute. The soil should be deep and well prepared, and the crop cut for hay when tho blossoms begin to shed. Celery should be earthed up as fast as it grows in order to get it to branch well. Still the operation mast not be commenced too early, ns the growth might be weakened some what thereby. Above all things, allow no soil to get into the heart in earthing, as the crown is apt to rot from this. To keep celery, place a board about nine inches from the cellar wall and pack full of the plants in an upright position. Nine inches from this board place another, and pock full In the same way. Underneath is placed damp moss. Keep the cellar dark and ot as low a temperature as possible to 40 degrees. Excessive acidity in cream before churning causes a partial separation of the butter fair, and the acid also develops glycerine from one of tho oils composing these fats. Souring cream does not add to the quality of butter; i simply creates a strong flavor of unsoure BET. SAM JONES. His Work In Texas???'What n Waco Paper Sajs of Him* From the Waco Examiner.
