Lynchbcro, Vu., October 13.???The town of
Liberty, 25 miles west of this point, suffered
partial destruction by an Ineebdlary fire yes
terday. Twenty-one business houses were con
tented . There was no fire apparatus at hand,
and the flnmcs were not arrested until the ar
rival of assistance from this city. The loss is
$150,000.

ator Colquitt left for Atlanta via Brunswick
this evening. He made powerful and eloquent

and accomplished much good. At a great
meeting in Fernandinalastnight, Colquitt and
Georgia were cheered to the echo. The sens
tor spoke in company with Dougherty am
Gravea, two Georgians who have gone to the
front in Florida. Florida Will give the nation
al and state democratic ticket a clear majority
and send two democratic congressmen

be made to secure an extension of time. The

Caldwell Marlon Blakely, a prominent stijj popu
lar young cotton merchant of this city, committed
suicide this afternoon by shooting himself through
the head with a pistol. Death was almost Instan

Augusts, Gb., October 18.???[Special.]???This
morning at lour o'clock the entire business
portion of the village of Edgefield, South Caro
lina, was destroyed by fire, leaving only throe
of the sixteen stores standing. Tho fire origi
nated in the atore of 0. L. Marsh, and ia sup
posed to be tho set of a burglar and incen
diary. Thu loss is about one hundred thous
and, with little insurance, and only small
S orts of the stocks in the stores saved. To-
sy???s fire swept the same territory btirnod
three years ago on the thirteenth of Octo
ber. The courtliouso and tho Masonlo
bail escaped both conflagrations,
but with these exceptions, and the stores of
Alvin Hart, Captain Anderson and D. K. Hur
on!, the latter under Masonic ball, the entire
business portion of Edgefield is to-day in
ashes. The office of the Edgefield Chronicle
and the law offices of \V. D. Outs and T. L.
Addison, in connection, were destroyed and tho

horrible accidents occurred at Athens, Tenn.,
near this cily to-day. Colour! Hugh Knox,
a prominent stock raiser, while examining a
horse was kicked to death bytha animal,
His bead was stamped from his body.
Dave Hamilton aud John Foeey, two men
enaged in digging a well, were both suffocated
by firedamp. Hamilton went down to set a
blast. Tailing to give any sigual, Fosey also
descended to ascertain whut was the matter
with Hamilton, when he, too, was overcome.

the Tabord Inn was destroyed by Are this morn-
tog. The hotel was a splendid structure, and was
ImUt under the aupervlatoa of Thesis Hughes
himself. The loss is about twelve thonsaud dol
lars.

patch to the Appeal from Tupelo. Miss., soya:
One of the most terrible wrecks that ever oc
curred on tbs Mobile and Ohio railroad, hap
pened a few miles north of this place l;ut
night. Every coach of the passenger train
due here at 1:30 a. in. was throwu from
tho track ond badly damaged.
The rails bad been taken up
by unknown persons In view of tho wrecked
trail*. There were about fifteen passenger*
on the train, all oi whom were more or less
injured, but none were kille^. The follow
ing five were seriously injured: Itev. J. B. In
man, of Henderson, Tenn; Mrs. Warner, of
Foil Henry, York: Paul Krauz, of St.
Louis; Leo. Groff, of Springfield, Ohio, and a
negro. The attending physicians thinks that
none are fatally injured. They aro being well
cared for at a hotel here.

merly of Missirtippi. but more recently of
Ksntas City, Mo., wos arrested at tho Peabody
late last night and is held a prisoner to await
a requisition ior the alleged murder of Jerry
Gable, in Bolivar county, Miss., three years
ago. Je fie re on was then n youth of 18, in
the employ of John II. Fanner, on Thomas
II. A Items place, in that couuty, and
became itivolvod in a difficulty with Gable,
who was a turbulent negro rough, on account
of refusing to give him whisky. In the course
of the quarrel Gable got possession ot a gun.
when .Jeticraon retreated into tho store, armed
himself and shot hi* assailant dead. Tho af
fair occurred about the last of February, 1881.
Mr. Jefferson will bo taken back to Bolivar
county. He teems to feel lio anxiety as to the
result, and claims that ho acted entirely in
self-defense, Gable being in pursuit of him
when tho killing was done.

block from O'Brien's opera house, which was
jammed with people, witnessing tho minstrel
performance. A stampede would have occur
red. had not Mnunger O'Brien, with perfect
coolness, walked down the aisle and allayed
all fears.

Eufaui.a, Ala., October 15.???A tragedy une-
qtialcd since the famous riot oi 1871, whs enacted
one and a half miles west of tho city, by a duel to
the death with knives, between Louis Roldnson
and Jack llnrolter, colored. The two were In the
city yesterday, and with several friends drank
freely. There win no good will between tho vic
tims, on account of If inn iter???s alleged illicit Inti
macy with RtAduson's wife, and on their way
homo yesterday afternoon, druuk,
they began abusing each other's family, and
quarreled all the way home. After supper they
renewed tho difficulty, severe abuse was Indulged
In, and the parties were separated by friends sev
eral times, until nothing would appease them but
blood, particularly, ns alleged, since namltcr
twitted Robinson on bis wife's faithlessness, aud
they resorted to knives. Every effort was made to
restrain the combatants, but uselessly, aud Rob
inson, exasperated to frenzy, remarked to hts
antagonist: "If you want to cut I am ready," aud
???libbed I lam I tor twoor three times beforo tho latter
got a blow at him. This was enough, ss Robin ion
received his death wound by a stab tn tho nock,
which severed the carotid artery. It was a weird
sreno, aa during the progress of tho due) tbo
frightened women had assembled with lighted

riated men. After tho blow waa tenefvsd by Rob
inson he walked away about admen yards, tho

Oxanna, A In.,Oetobor 18.???[Special]???Mr. A.
B. Johnson,the president uf tlieCoulburg min
ing company, and a brother of Mr. J. W.
Johnson, president of tbo Georgia Faolfie rail
road, was seriously, if not fatally, stabbed at
(lie hotel at this place yesterday. Ha wont to
Oxford yesterday to ell'eot a settlement for
some cool which had bscn received by
Oxanna parties. Mr. Constantine had
??security for the payment of the debt.
Johnson suggested to tho psrtiea who
w cto brick makers that he would accept brick
in payment ut tho rate of oue dollar per
thousand. They wanted instead one dollar
???ud a half. This led to words between both
parties. Mr. Johnson returned to Oxanna,
epd was followed by the Messrs. Constantine,
lather and son. to the platform of the hotel,
where the subject wae again broached. In
the diacuaaiou tho elder Constantine
called Mr. Johuson a liar, whereuiMtu he was
immediately struck by that gentleman. A
short scuffle ensued, and as the elder Constan
tine was engaging tho attention of Mr. John
son the son came up from behind with a knife,
made a lunge around lilt neck for hit throat.
In doing so ne missed hts neck, but instead
made a frightful gash across his nose.
He turned te meet his new assailant
and aa he did ao the father Constantine attacked
him with a whip. He turned book again at
the last attack, and aa he did so the. young
man came at him from behind and stabbed
him three times???twice iu the face and one
deep cut of five inches through tho lung. Par
ties interfered and further bloodshed waa pre
vented. A call waa made on the marshal of
tnwu to arrest Constantine, but
retused to do so without a
warrant, lla gave himself up to-day r but
was st onee given freedom on bait. President
John W. Johnson, ot thaGeorgia Pacific, cams
for his brother in his private car, and hat
taken him to Birmingham. His wouad is
pronounced exceedingly dangerous. The
Constantines were both formerly residents ot
Atlanta, and are well to do here.

Mxrojr, October 17.???[Special.J???This afternoon
at holt past two o???clock, Mayor Corps I received a
telegram from Mayer Murphy, of BartoMville,
saying that the city was on fire, end s.??kdd for
assistance. He immediately notified the chief of
tho fire department, Mr. Jones, and Ih sent
message to each engine house, telling .the cap
tains to hold their engines In resd
J new. This done, he then caused
a general . fire alarm to
given. When the members of the different
panics had assembled, he notified No. 3 aud No. 5
reel companies, and No. 6steamer to repair to the
delivery freight depot of the Central railroad and
have them placed on n special train, which w
welting for them, furnished )>y the Central railroad
authorities.
COMMUNICATION CUT OFF.
There waa much excitement throughout the
city, and tbo telegraph offices of'the Western
Union and Southern companies were besieged by
citizens trying to learn the news. A mm*go flick
ered over the Houthorn company???s wire* stating
that the hotel, W. It. Morpbey's store, the post-
office and a warehouse with 200 bales of cotl<
were on fire. The operator next added that the
building ho was In was on fire and he would have
to leave. At the Western UuIon office the opera
tor said he would be C3mpelled to abandon his in
struments, and the burning pity was
cut ofl' from Macon.

In tho meantime about 200 citizens had gather
ed around the special tialu, and it stood waiting
ordc r* for the run. It was commanded by Mr. L.
C. Google, while Engineer Barnes aud Fireman
Mike Dairy stood at their posts ready for the sig
nal. The excitement was Intense, and the fire
men and a few others breathlessly awaited tho

The Story of the Fir??.
Darnuville, Ga., October 17.???[Special]-About
half past oue o'clock this afternoon a lot of cot
ton on the wharf of the Central railroad caught
fire from the tparks of a passing engine and tbo
flsmcs, blown by a good breeze soon communi
cated to the-wurebotuo of Messrs. J. T. Hunt Ac
Co., and spread very rapidly to the southward,
until the entire north side, cast side and tho post-
office block on the west lido were a moat of ruins.
The flro was put under control at the bank cor
ntr, and tho western h.!o of the town was saved.
The total number of* build! ngi consumed was
thirty-five.
THK TOTAL DAMAOB.
The aggregate value of property destroyed Is
f 120,OCO; tho total Insurance la $10,000. Much of
the goods were carried to the open square, aud af
terwards burned. Tho fire department of Gridin
came to onr help and placrd onr little city under
lasting obligations.
Tho fire at BarncsvUle on Friday last
laid in ashes four-fifths of tho businoss
portion of that prosperous little city, ami en
tailed upon tho peoplo a lost that would in
moat places be considered frropurablo.
Barncsville is full of grit, however, and is
surrounded by a prosperous country. That
she will rebuild and spring into new

the little city by Atlanta people and doubtless
by all tho peoplo of tho itato. The entire
business part of tho city waa cwnpletly do-

Dr. James A. Gray,who came up from Barnes-
ville yesterday, whero he had ro.v??\??f'profes

**I have seen nothing before tbnt so re
minded mo of the yld sights around Atlanta
when the city was burned by Sherman. It is
n waste of ruins. Tho walls had crumbled
when I left, tho debris was still smoking
and tho lonely looking chimneys that could
be seen in overy direction told
a story that to me was inexpressibly sad. It
was n very disastrous flro te a great many
people who lost everything they had in the
Danies.'*

The fire started in a lot of cotton on tho dopot
platform about half past ono o'clock in tho
day time, catching from the sparks of a pass
ing engine on the Central railroad. I wont

quiries as to how the firo was getting on.
n hen we got te Griffin a company of firemen
{ [ot on board. It was stated te us that at a
ew minute* post seven from tho top of a drug
store llio Haines could be plainly seen. We
wero satisfied that the firo was still raging,
and the greatest interest continued to exist.
Tho train was pasked. Tho night was d irk,
and when we got te Milner, six mile* from
Barneavillc, wo could see tho lire. From that
time on tho excitement knew no bounds.
Every man was trying to get at a window so
that he could see the lire. Wo had taken on
fifty or sixty passengers nt Grifliu and thirty
or lorty at Milner and when wo ronched the
burning town we found people coming in by
every imaginable conveyance from the coun
try. When we got to Barnesville wo found
that the tire had been gotten undor control,
though the engines Were still playing on the
burning debris."
???There were two or three things of Interest
that 1 saw," continued Dr. Gray. ???Murphy
A Co. had their winter coal stored on their
lot. I saw it burning and it wai getting
down to business in lively style There was
a big idle of salt, too, that a bui ding had
burned down on. Tho salt remained intact,
except that the sacks were burned off. A big
pile of guano was left that way, too. The fire
had completely robbed the guano of its odor,
???ud it waa like so much ashes."

stock amounted to -v 10,000 to$18,000, of which

Bel ley, Duncan k Co., Dr. Smith, J. W. Mc
Millan k Co., Northcutt k Johnson, J. F. Col
lins, J. Q. Tanner, the News end Farmer, and
the Litchfield house, and J. II. Bate k Co., J.
J. Moore, O. Chastain, and others were all
doroaged by moving goods.
The total insurance reaches about $17,009
against $30,000 of losses. Tanner's safe and
Litchfield A Putnam's safe were both open
ed to-day and found to he all right. Leraon???i
safe contains $10,000 of bonds.- It 1ms not
been opened yet, but it is believed nothing in
it is injured.
DURING THE WEEK.

wes completely ruined. His office, including a
new cylinder press, was burned nnd he did
not save a type. A number had no insurance.
One poor fellow rau out with his coat off and
while fighting fire liis place with $S00 in eash
???all he had on earth???waa burned. He ab
solutely didn't have a coat."
Dr. Urey aaya Barnesville will be rebuilt.

Yesterday several of the material men and
contractors of Atlanta received communica
tions from Barnesville looking to an immedi
ate rebuilding of the structures burned Fri
day. This spirit of enterprise was generally
discussed and highly praised in Atlanta. It
will not be long before Barnesville Is better
built and more prosperous than ever.
ACWORTH ABLAZE,
A Thirty Thousand Bolter Flro Stakes a Big

Acworth, October 18.???[Special.]???A fire
broke out here last night about nine o'clock
cud destroyed $30,000 worth of property. It
originated in the store of L. H. Tanner, and
the fronted store house of Litchfield Jt Put
nam ou one aide and the double brick ofS. Lem
on A Co. on the other. The work uf the flames
was checked at the drug store of Dr. Bailey,
thus saving the balsr.ee of the principal busi
ness houses of the place and the hotel.
L. II. Tanner loses his house and almost en
tire stock, lie had $2,000 insurant?? on ths

Tuesday, October 14.
A num her of Irish-American citizens of New
York city arranged for a public reception to Dan
iel HcSweeny, the Irish suspect, who will shortly
visit that city. The health officer of Brooklyn
closed the filth wnrd public school because of tho
prevalence of diphtheria. Ex-President Theodore
D. Woolseley bos resigned from the Yale college
corporation on account of old age. A banquet was
given in Paris by the Sociedan Latino Americans
to commemorate the 382d anniversary of tbo dis
