Wichita Falls. The arrest* were made under
New Mexican warrants and a requisite
from Governor Ireland, of Texas, whou the
fact of Courtright???* arrest was discovers _
great excitement and indignation prevailed)
and 1,500 persons assembled at tho

fined and prevented the officers from

ficulty that the crowd were prevented from
rescuing Courtright, but he was Anally carried
to the county jail. A writ of habeas corpus
lias been sworn out. Governor Ireland is se
verely censured for his action, having once
promised the citizens committee thatho would
never sign the requisition warrant.

Jim McIntyre, accuscd'with Courtright,who
was arrested Huturday at Wichita Fails, was
brought to this city last night. There was a
great crowd at tho depot. It now transpires
that tho men wero not wanted for tho murder
of tho Mexicans at Silver City, hut for tho kil
ling of two Americans named XJoestsdt, near
Albuquorque, whom they nro charged 'with
Laving first arrested as officers ot tho law, and

and chaplain at the county alms house,

drover, who hod been furnishing tho alms-
bouio with large consignment* of cattle. They
are charged with bribery and conspiracy in
connection with the slnislifluso frauds, now
being investigated by tbe committee or eiti

former named John Hurchka, living near here,
murdered his aged wife and fled to tho woods.
He was raptured by a farmer and returned to
the villago. It was nt once seen thatho was a
raving maniac. During the night, without
tho least provocation, ho had shot his wife af
ter sending the children to bed. Both barrels
of tho gun wero discharged, and the wife???*
body was terribly mutilated. The man find
in his night clothes nnd was almost frozen
when captured. Ho was rational for a time,
and fhe jailer told him that ho had killed hi*
wife. 3???his was tho first ho seemed to know of
his terriblo act. lie waa almost prostrate-
when ho realized whut ho had done, exclaim
ing in tho German language: *'Groat God in
heaven, what hnvo I done I" The suffering*
of tho |ioor wretch wero heartrending. Whoa
tho jail was opened, his body, cold in denth.

hanged himself, using a suspender for the
purpose. Tho deed was probably done during
tho early part of tho night.

was assaulted by him and beaten to insensi

kerosene oil over her limbs and body nnd
ignited it. Hho was badly burned and was

ing, whilo James L. Clayton, aged 18, was
visiting his friend, John 8. Baker, aged 17, at
tho lattcr'n home, near Seventeenth and Brown
streets, this city. Baker's puronts left them
alone in the dining room, hi* father going out
to the store and his mother starting upstairs.
Bhc had been gone hut a moment when three
pistol shots startled her, and running back to
where tho boys were, sho found both lying on
the floor weltering in their blood and a bull
dog revolver in Clayton???s hands. Baker had
two bullet wounds in his head and hndalroad;
expired. Clayton had ono bullet in his hen*
and died very shortly afterwards. Tho boys

eigu legations, having among her other gifts
