The Caplain 8am, ti river steamer plying be
tween this pla'-e and Selma, ran on a sand bar
ycrictdiy evening about a mile below Wash
iuglt h ferry, it being about sixteen milos from
Mctlgcmery. While trying to got'off
of tb?? sand bsr it is supposed that
the boilers were neglected, as thor
raised loo much ttesm in trying to bark off.
Aleut 9 p. m. tho boiler exploded, blowing
tlio boat ail to pit res. So great was the forco
of I lie explosion that it threw tho timbers in
the field 100 yards from the water, and scat
tered therrew in all directions. This morn
ing, in summing up, it was found that three
colored men and Captain Kngiish???s little
daughter, aged seven years, wore missing.
Five colored men and tho white
watchman of tho boat were
seriously wounded. Threo colored men were
aligLtly hurt. Dubose McNeill, a very prom
ising young men of Autaugaville, Ala., was
foun) fatally wounded, and died to-day at I
J ??, m. Captain English was blown thirty
ect into the water, but escaped with a'f??*w
bruitet and cuts from the Hying timbers.
One of the captain's little daughters and his son
escaped unhurt. The pilot and Engineer
Fierce alio escaped unhurt. The engineer
was noton duty when tbo explosion occurred.
Tbice doctors from Prattville went to tho
scene of the disaster, and did everything for
the wounded. They wero left ns comfortable
os possible on the bank of tho river, aud will
be removed to Montgomery as toon as expe

A Litter Account.

The steamboat, Captain 8am, commanded by
Captain C. J. English, on her up trip from
Selma to Montgomery, on the Alabama river,
exploded her boiler near Headnot???s landing,
twenty miles below bore, at 10 o'clock last
night. There were twenty persons
almard, lour of whom were killed
outright and missing. The following
are the names of tho missing. Kattie English,
eleven-year-old daughter ot the captain, and
three negro deck hands, named 8am, Jack
and Gus. Nearly all tho others are more or
lees wounded and scalded,some slightly, others
serious. Among the passengers badly hurt is
Dubtse McNeal, of Autaugavilla, Alabama.
Doth his legs were broken and other
wise* injured. No died since, bsforo he
could do niovid. At tbo time of the
accident tho host was close to the bank in
shallow water, with a moderate amount of
strain up, and Captain English was at tho
wheel in the pilot.

Dr. Wilson attcu led him ami pronounced his

fatal. The Montgomery oily authorities
sent Dra. Hill and Simpson with nurses and
ambulances to the scene of disaster, whouce
they will return to night with tho wounded,
who will be properly taken caro of. Hcven
arrived to-night nnd were convoyed to tlra
city hospital. Mott of the above foots were
gathered by your correspondent from Captain
English, who, although suffering bodily and
mental agoniea, described the true facts made
public.

rail to their borne at Lotindcsboro, Ain., this
evening.
The boiler of the boat was almost new and
in good condition, with but a moderate amount
of steam on. The boat wm an old tow boat,
purchased by some Selma merchants and used
lately as a trade boat between there anl here.
The cargo consisted of 60 bales of cotton and
MM) sacks of cotton seed, which wero scattered
broadcast for some distance. The boat is badly
wrecked and the cabin gone.

end collision in a week occurred on the Mobile
and Montgomery raillroad, this time 27 miles
from here, at Calhoun 8tation. Two sectious
of tbo freight collided with the rear section of

front motion bad tour cars badly wrecked, but
nobody hurt.

"I will never forget one engagement we
had in the late war. The Yanka were trying
to blow up onr megatine, which we had under
twelve feet of dirt. Reporta published after

thrown in three hours, and they had got
down to the logs that covered our powder. It
was getting warm about that time, but dsrk-
nedh canto on and protected us. My gun ha l
an arm blown off and not a man was killed.

municipal laborers wero engaged to-day in
fill ng up the incuts around the fortifications,

towards tbo laborers already engaged. The
commissary of police addressed the intruders,
urging them to desist, but his efforts at ap
punting them wero unavailing, And ho wii
umr elnd to summon the Assistance of the
gendarme to eject them. The mon, howover,
reiumed and forced an entry into the works.
A force of ruiraasiera was then summoned,
who charged upon and dispersed tho rioters.

the trouble, it is feared, will bo made to
