L??wiv:u.i,Ky.,November 2??.???Th?? Courier.
Journal recently sent a staff corrcsiroodent to
investigate the reported ravage* of the dread
disease in eastern Kentucky and western Vir
ginia. The correspondent stnd* the following
from ???Williamsburg, Ky,
W. Lesttt, a prominent attorney of this place,
Lai Just arrived from Mount Pleasant, the county
eeatol Harlan, where be ha'* been too weeks past
at court, as acting prostrating attorney. lister
hit InformsttMi of the prevailing plague, prlnci
pally from Harlan, Letcher, Perry. J<e??Ito and Bell
counties, lie says that In Harlan It appears worse.
It is meet fatal and prevails to the greatest oxteut
up about the headwater of Poor Pe rk and Clover
Creek, in the mountains, about twcuty-flvo miles
from Mount Pleasant Tbls large territory
is being tatrlWy afflicted. TIjo people
arc dying very rapidly, n one ticlghlforhood
twelve penoo?? died In a single day lu the Utter
part of last week, and there were scarcely well poo
pie enough to o ako them coffins and bury them.
On Brown???s creek, which rises In Harlan and
empties Into the Cumberland river, in Bell coun
ty, the disease is raging with frightful Utility,
and there Is no means of keeping a record of the
deaths. All along the banks ol the stream the
people are sick, and physicians and medicines,
ouDIdt-of herta and roots, frith whose curatiro
properties the natives are acquainted, arc un
known and unobtainable. The epidemic is rap
idly spreading In HarUn county. Ih the district
covering thesouibern portion of Letcher and
Terry, tbo whole ol Lcalloand the northwest por
tion of Bell counties, the plague has obtained
foothold. I.ut reports as to lit vloloooe are
very conflicting. Ldter thinks that the
deaths * run op Inlo the hundreds while
the r umber of those attacked cannot beSostl-
mated, llicdbcase docs not prevail at Mt Plots
ant. Lester further says that no one seemed to
know the rial t atnre of the pestilence. Most of
Iho people called It ???flux." aud H is probably a
very aggravated form of tbaidfronte. It begins
with griping pales In the stomach, followed by a
debilitating discharge aud awe! 11 ug of
the Urn at, and if not fatal in
three or four days, tbo patient, as a rule*
record*. All rrports sgreo as lo the cause of iho
epidemic, It being attributed to the use of impure
water by the natives. Thofscason has been tin-
urnally dry. Tho streams, as a rule, consisting
only of narrow threads of murky, foul nfftelllng
and foul-tartlng water. The corn cron In all the
countries named above is good, ami starvation and
want only ??xbt t??ccau*e the people can spare no
time from tbe sick to gather It. No mills arc run
ning on the smaller streams. My liiforiuaut bad
no news except In a general way of the prevalence
ol the plague in Virginia or West Virginia."
A Litter Account.
Lonsviua, Ky., November 2i*.???Arthur A.
I.ooinls, traveling representative for a New
York firm, was in this city to-doy, having just
returned from a trip through the plague-
atrickcn district of eastern Kentucky. Mr.
Loomis ssid he was four days In Manton
county without disposing of a single article.
The people are absolutely c rnzy. They hare
no ure for anything but coffins. In ao inter
view on this subject he describes in pictur
esque languoge the situation os being a groat
deal worse than ha?? been heretofore publish
ed. He describes tho streams, wells urn! cis
terns as having dried up; sheep aud cattle
dead upon parched fields, and every liutuau
being in the entire neighborhood dead. Thou
sands of perrons perished within a few weeks.
Mnmtlion, Mr. I<o<uiiii soy*, has been the
chief agent ot death in the stricken locality.
