Mrs. Lambert is a widow lady, aud together with her daughter makes a comfortable living by handling a limited stock ot family grocer ies. Their store is on Peters street, nt tho corner of Leonard street, and their trade it confined to people living in that neighbor hood. Several months ago a negro man named Morrison began trading with Mrs. Lambert. He was then working by the day, end drew his wages once a week, consequently he wav not able to par the money every timo he made a purchase, airs. Lambert could not afford to 8EH. nra noons 05 credit unless she was absolutely certain that she would get her money. This, however, was adjusted to the satisfaction ot both parties by tbe negro leaving his watch with Mrs. Lam bert as a security for what he bought. Daring the week ho would send to the store and what he wanted, and on Saturday night a having drawn bis pay, he would call, settle up end get his watch. The next Monday morn ing he would bring the watch back to Mrs. Lambert, thereby making his credit good for another week. This went on for some time, but about five weeka ago the negro failed to come in and redeem his watch. Tbe noxt week Mrs. Lambert ascertained that the negro had left Atlanta, but as tho watch was worth all ho owed her. sho gave hetself no trouble, believing that Morrison would come lack ar.d take it up. About two weeks ago a negro man whom Mrs. Lambert knew to bo a friend of Morrison???s entered the store and offered to pay what Morrison owed and take up the wnten. At first Mrs. Lambert declined the proposition, but finally delivered the watch to the negro and took ms written itKcr.trr for it. Imme diately after receiving this letter Mrs. Lim ber t sent for tho negro, to whom she had de livered the watch, aud asked him to lot her havo it again, but the negro refused, saying that ho would bo responsible to Morrison for tho watch. Day before yesterday Morrison came back (o Atlanta, and soon after reaching the city, got his watch from the negro man. Last night Tlo entered Mrs. Lambert's store, and pulling out the watch, said: ???Bee, I have got my watch back. You wcrc???nt half so smart as you thought you were whim you sold it.??? This remark was delivered in the most im pertinent manner imoginablc, and wns ac companied by very proianc language. Mrs. Lambert and ber daughter wero afono, and fearing that the negro meant mischief neither ono mode any reply to. him. This at the negro, and he began: I???BIMI THE MOST A!U\SIVK LAXGUAOK to the ladies. If you como from behind that counter I???ll kill you,??? the negro replied as Miss Lambert arcro and started towards the door. His threat, hcwevcr, did not frighten her, but tho instant she stepped from benind tho counter, tbe negro dealt her a terrible blow with his fist. Tho negro's fist was as hard iron and struck the young lady square on the lorohoal, knocking her senseless. This brutal piece of work brought Mrs. Lambert to her feet, but as she approached her daughter, who was lying motionless on the floor, the scoundrel threw a large rock at her which barely missed tho old lady's head. The negro then sprang out the door Into tho street, and picking up stones began throwing them at the house. Mrs. I/nmbcrt began calling for holp aud the negro skipped out. ??? IT WAS A nARD LICK. Tho young lady remained motionless for J ulte a whilo, and Mrs. Lambert began to bc- evo that she bad boon killed; but after a few minutes of painful suspense sho detectod signs of returning consciousness, and when Miss Lambert opened her eyes her first words were: '???Did heliurt you. mother???? The mother then helped her daughter to her bed and began bathing her bruised forehead.
