The indications are that business g*n- crally will be suspended, and tho city gaily decorated. During the past week the arraog ing of exhibits lias progressed rapidly, s ' good work has been aono in getting tbe ni grounds in order. Tho most difficult problem remaining unsolved is tbo question or trans portation. With tbe present limited street car accommodation, not more than 10,000 Hors daily will bo able to reach the park with any degree of comfort. Two steamboats will start Tuesday, making trips from Elysian Fields street to tnc exposition, also taking on passengers at Canal and Jackson street*. To accommodate the increasing applicants for space, an iron building, 400 feet long, was constructed at the south end of tho maiu build ing. Notwithstanding this addition, it was found twelve days ago that more than five hundred exhibitors could not be supplied with room, and tbo management decided to add a building 400 feet long, to tbo other end of tho main building. This addition is now approaching completion. The main building, with it" additions, is nearly a half mile in length. The government building, bHj feet by 603 feet, is found to be too small??? so much larger and more numerous are tho exhibits thou was thought possible a few months sgo. Tbe department of information and accommodations of the World's exposition arc now thoroughly organized under the direc tion of Cajrtsin B. T. Walshe. The central office is at 104 Gravicr street, and has tele phone connection with twenty-eight branch offices. Bat Bo Would Hot???-A Wail From tho Tomba-Otbor Political Fointa Ai.uaxv, N.Y., December 0.???A Washington special to the Press and Knickerbocker relates an interview with Mr. Blaine by a gentleman who holds a high position at the capital, staunch republics!, and a warm admirer of the defeated candidate. Mr. Blaine confessed frankly that bis defeat was Mr. Conkling' victory, and gave the following narrative: ???Tbe coldness," Mr. Blaine said, ???between Mr. Conkling and myselt is of long standing, dating back to tbe time we both were in tho house of representatives. He has opposed my political advancement ever since that time. Of course, I retaliated, but more in a defensive way than otbcrwiic, until Mr. Conkling assumed ou antagonistic position towards *the*^ate Presi dent Garfield, when I took the offensive and apposed Mr. Conkling???s return to the senate after he hod resigned his seat therein. It is a mistake to say that Mr. Garfield opposed Mr. Conkling???s return. lie was entirely care less concerning the matter. He said he cared nothing for any annoyance that gentle man might attempt against the admmistra tiob. The fact js Mr. Garfield intended that his administration should be such as to merit the approval of the country, and he did not believe that Conkling or nny other one man could successfully oppose it. But I could not bring myself to look upon the matter in that light, and brought to bear what opposition I could to Mr. Conkling???s return to tho senate. As ho bad opposed my political advance ment, I had ??? a perfect right to re taliate in kind. Ho was defeated, and thus matters stood until tho approach of the na tional convention. When I was put in tbe field for the nomination by my friends. I had doubts as to tho propriety of my taking the position with so powerful an opponent at large. But I was assured Mr. Conkling had turnod his back on politics, that ho would take no psrt in the canvass for either the nominatioa tho election. In addition to this I was visited by com mittces and written to from ail sections of the country urging me to consent to the use of my noiuo before the convention. I finally yielded. I bed taken pains to learn Mr. Conkling???s feel ings. At first he was reticent, saying he w*i out of |>oliUcs. Later bo said he hoped tho convention would nominato a man. This wes interpreted to me that he had prefer red mo to Arthur. I felt some relief. 1 was nominated. Tho October result Ohio ^ elated us. I desired to visit New York. The announcement was then made that if I did so Mr. Conkling would slump against me. If I wjuld stay out of New York he would make no speeches. Ho said he would submit tho question to the peo ple without argument, but if I wanted to ar gue ho would meet mo. I abided the decision of my friends not to bring any issue in of this kind in the nature of a personal quarrel. This contented Mr. Conkliug and he remained out of politics. ???The ouestion went to the republicans of New York, ns Mr. Conkliug wonted it to, and ho won. lie has had his revenge. I don???t say I kept him out of the senate, but I did ail 1 could^ and ho has prevented my cloction to the presidency. Only Mr. Conkling could have given Now York state to me and ho would not. Perhaps I could have roturned him to the senate, but I would not. But ho has beat en me three times to my once beating him.
