Athens, Dcccmbir 23 ???[Special,]???On Monday
Afternoon, abont2 o???clock, a vcrltablo cyclono
swept over Oglethorpe county, Just above Maxeys,
on the Athens branch. It struck the place oi Dr.
McKee, and blew down every house except his
dwelling, which was outside the track. The storm
blew down all the fences on his farm, and destroy*
cd on orchard and a large lot of timber. A large
tree was blown across a railroad cut. We havo
heard no further news from the cyclone, but ft is
feared that serious damage was done elsewhere In
the country. The track of the storm was pnly 75
yards wide. A fearful rain fell In both Oglethorpe
and Oconee, accompanied by hall. Mr. Mack H.
young rays the cyclone struck his pjace near his
house, but did no damago except to demolish
trees and fenced, and killed a fine cow. There
were _ two .??? jet . black clouds that
In their path. A sweetgum tree was atrucl
twisted off like a straw. A pine thicket below Dr.
McKee???s was leveled with the earth, not a tree left
standing. In fact, everything in Its path wa3
swept clean, but the damage was greater in th
bottoms than on the hillsides. 4
Savannah, Ga, December 22.???[Spoclal.]???A
frightful accident occurred on the Savannah, Flor
ida and Western railroad.-yesterday near the
eighty-second mile post.~ '
As the pnrsenger train was coming to Savannah,
xunnfngatthorcgularspeed, thotinglnecr sudden
ly espied two men, near tho point named, lying
on the track either drunk or asleep He immedi
ately reversed Ills engine and whistled down
breaks, but it was too late. TheQ
gine struck the . unfortunate men
crushing; in their rskulls. The train was
stopped and^thc injured men placed on board and
brought to the city and carried to the hospital.
The best attention was given them but they died
early this morning. Keithe* was apparently over
twenty-three years of age and both were decently
dressed.
Tho name of one was ascertained by letters on
his person to be Gustavo Watchclcr. He had sev
eral letters and pictures and a seaman???s
discharge In his ' pocket. One of
the letters wss from his sister.
Bertha Watcbeler written on tho 27th of May,
1884, from Cincinnati, Ohio. In this letter reft
crenco is made to the young man who was killed
with him. She begs her brother to be a good boy
and let whisky alone. It is thought that tho two
were,under the influence d liquor when killed.
There was also a letter in German
from Pauline Young from Bremen, Ohio, as well
cs one from Henry W. Miller and Augustus Mau-
nen, of the same place.' Among ths [pictures in
his possession was a neatly executed photo of a
well dressed young girl of about twenty years, also
a tin*type of some other girl and a tin-typo of him
self in sailor's uniform. He wore in this picture
a large chain around his neck, connect
ing [with tho watch in his trousers???
pocket Carefully wrapped in a piece of paper
was a little Christmas card, fringed with red silk.
He had another sister, judging from tho contents
of the letter, whose name was Alma.

race for ordinary ofBartdwpcrahty ha* brought out
a curious revelation whlfch is made by It W. Mur
phy, who i<the candidate against J. A. Howard,
who has held the office for years. It Is shown that
when Gcorgo A. Howard, tho son of Ordinary J.
A. Howard, who was also his clerk, married Miss
Anna G. Payne, it was against his father's will. It
Js tho duty of the ordinary to issue marriage
licenses, and after' tho marriage has
been performed it is the duty of the
minister to return this liconse, properly
signed to???the ordinary???s office,where ho is required
by law to record such licenses, to stand forever as
a legal proof of such marriage, for tho protection
and honor of tbo parties conccrnod. Tho llccnso

Payno was returned by Rev. R. B. Hcadden, who
bad married them in tho usual manner, when, in
stead of putting it upon record Ordinary Howard
wrote on tho faco of tho same the following in
dorsement, addressed to his son:'

William Rainey, were out hunting, and about

crossing a fence, Rainey???s gun was discharged and

House???s right leg, just under the knee, tearing it In
a fearful manner. Drs. Humphries and McConnell
were summoned, and decided amputation was
necessary.. Mr. House, the father of tho un
fortunate young man, had Dr. W. F. Westmore-
ation, but the shock was too great for him am

Happenings on tho Farm and in the Coun
tryside???Among the Farmers-
Mr. David Conger, an old and much respected
citizen o! Clarke county, living within two
miles of Athens, lug read the New Testament
through twelve times this year, besides reading
the Psalms of the Old Testament through six
times, and then had tlmo to read and keep up
with the current events of the day. This pious
old gentleman deserves long life and great hap
piness.
A negro woman aged 128 years died tt Denis
station last week.
A little two-year-old child of Mrs. Pat Butler, of
Walton county, was accidentally drowned in a tub
of water one day last week..
The death of .Richard M. Mobley, in Texas, is a
very sad one. His wlfo, formerly Miss Jordan, of
Montlcello/went out to Texas to marry him, his
duties being such that ho could not leave. Re
cently she returned to this state on a visit to rela
tives, but found her husband on his death bod
when sbe reached her western home.
Mr. J. It. M. Wilson, a farmer living near Irwin-
ton had the sum of 81,020 dollars in gold stolon
from him. Tho robery was effeced by boring from
underneath the house, through the floor and Into
a trunk, where ho had bis hard earned savings se
creted. Thero Is no clue to tho burglar.

Calhoun, Ga., December' 23'-[8pecial.]???Tho
discovery of silver in Fort mountain, in Murray
county, has created great, excitement in that sec
tion, and men arc .locking there from all ports of
tho country. Tbo most valuable deposit yet
known Is on the land of^Mr. Tyler, seven miles
from Spring Place, Ga., and eighteen from Dalton,
which is the nearest point to the railroad. A shaft
six feet deep, four wide, and twenty.long has been
aunk under the superintendence of an old miner of
seven years experience in the mines of the west

long, being the same that is now worked at Duck
Tow n, tn Tennessee. Here, the old miner says, ore
???was found at five feet from tbo surface as rich as

ton. It ia said to be more advantageously situated
than any mine in the west. It will drain itself to
a depth of 800 feet; has a water supply sufficient to
operate ten amelter stacks and all other machinery,

tinuc, cold, but the signal scrvico report,

here, at 0 o'clock, this morning, was four
degree, below sero, at St. Fanl twelve below,
et Fargo twenty-five below, and Omaha seven
below. At Dubuque it wa. eight

Chariot Smith, was tho man who entered tho

able property, and nearly killed Georgo Ca

was pnrkhcd *tho crime remained a mystery
until^pn^ay. The other man arrested with
Smithhkaa .Henry Davis. Both men wore taken
to Clay tffti for trial by a magistrate. On the
trial pmiUi swore that Davis was an accotn*
plico m .tho crime, and this was the only ov *
dcncc, and against Davis. Tho men were or
dered by the???court to be taken to tho Smith
field jail Wednesday morning. They woro
Jtept at Clayton Tuesday night incliargo of
two guards. Just boforo daylight a party of
masked men sprang out of tho darkness, and,
leveling revolvers at tho heads of tho guards,
demanded tho prisoners and took them in
charge.
It baa not become known that tho maskod
men placed the prisoners on horses and rodo
straight to the Neuso river, threo miles dis
tant. There, according to the testimony of
an eye witness, at tho countv bridge, thoy
wrapped their prisoners with traco chains,
leaving tho handcuffs upon them, and throw
them into tho river. The bodies havo not
yet been recovered,

Chattanooga, December 23.???News of a
frightful wreck on tho Now Orleans and North
eastern division of the Qucon and Crescent
route was received hero to-day. Tho train
wrecked was tho nortb-bound Atlanta express.
Three miles sooth of*Pnrvis, whilo tho train
was thundering down grado at tho rato of 40
miles an hour, it craahod into an obstruction
which had been placed on tho track
by some incarnato fiend. Tho
gino turned an almost completo somersault!

a gentleman named Elder, living in I???eavino dis
trict, Walker county, Georgia,The Constitution???
correspondent to-day learned of a distressing ac
cident which happened to a Miss Eastall, residing
in that section. Ennday morning, whilo standing
before an open hearth, her clothes caught flro and
sho wss so horribly burned that death onsued In
a few hours. No ono happened to ho in tho
houscatthc.timcof tho accident and aho was In
a dying condition when found.
Chattanooga, December 25.???[Special.]-rAbout
three o???clock this morn In:; n wot bound freight
train on tho Knoxville and Ohio railroad was dc-
ruilcd by a broken rail. The accident occurred
tbrcc miles from Carcyvlllc, and was attcndcl
with fatal results. Tho englno turned ovor and
rolled down an embankment. Engineer Tom
Conner and bla fireman remained at their posts
and went down with tho engine. Both tho men
hod Loth legs broken and Conner was severely
bruised. It Is thought they will die. Tho englno
and a number of cars wero badly wrecked.
William Flcss, a miner at 8oddy, met with a hor
rible death last night. Whilo mining under a
bank of slato it caved In, crushing Fleas to death,

from Texts and Arkansas en route to their former

It wss ascertained that hta calf!#had been
killed by tho train.
He had appealed for damages and falling to re
ceive it was embittered against the road and took
this means of wreaking revenge. His son osiriited
him. The popalace wero driven to fury over bis
diabolical deed and to-day at daybreak took him
from Jail and hanged him. Tho wretch confessed
the deed before ho was banged and exculpated his
bob. Uls name has not boon learned.
Knoxville, Tenn., December 27.???A special to

Warm Springs, North Carolina, was burned to-

last night by Joseph and William Ellington .and

for the alleged betrayal of their sister, aged 16.

Shreveport, La., December25.???This afternoon
I'avc Hass was killed and hts brother wounded by
antgronamed Dennis Boyd, at Willow Gbute,
twelve miles abovo here in Bossier parish. Boyd
went into their store and acted so badly that H&ss
was compelled to put him out. Boyd said he
would get his shot-guu, como back and kill
Haas.
Two hours later Haas and hts brother started
out of tho store, when Boyd, who was awaiting
near by, fired ??both barrels of his shotgun, tho
contents taking.cffccL in Haas???s breast and killing
him. His brother received a shot in his leg. Tho
murderer escaped,

Vicksburg, December 22.???Dill Thomas,colored,
was discharged from tho Louisville, New Orleans
and Texas railroad atCoohoma station on Friday.
Ho afterwords ambushed a train, firing at tho
conductor, who was riding in tho englno, and
putting eleven shots in his leg and threo ia tho
loco and head of tho flrcifian. Thomas was pur
sued, and when a party attempted to arrest him,
he attacked them and waa killed.
