Vfc have passed another milo-ftone in the
jcurUicy oi life. CL rtotmaa baa come again aud
non It has gene. How abort these milea are
gening at we near the end. They used to be
tong, voy long, to me. How that, I wonder!
???They tcy that time pastes swiftly when we are
"happy, and it is so, I know, for an hour or a
day, but it is not to for a month or a year.
Tie flight of years ia measured by our age.
Childhood is happy and bright, and to happy
children the tun "does never rite a wink too
aoen, nor bring too long a day," but the years
rccm almost an age???jm age of pleaaure. Time
abrinka up aa we grow old. Everything
ahrinka. The tree* are notao tall nor the
bills 10 long and atcep. The rivera are not
so wide and the creeks have become branches.
Indeed, the great big world that used to
???train our comprehension and excite our
wonder it not much of a planet now.
A)n Christmas night; that la the night beforo
Christmas, Mrs. Arp and I took our patri
archal stationa in the big arm ebaira by tho
parlor mantel, and with . patient aud serene
dignity prepared ourselves for coming oventa.
We let theyouag folks manage theso things

all 1 ran do is to look on and feast my soul

I were a boy again juat now, not for life, but
ju??t now. 1 would like to feel ae I used to
feel when all was bright and gushing and
exultant, and therh was no apprehension
trouble or grief or dark shadows to come.
Fuch thoughts do romo and go lu apifo
of ua and they mellow ua down and prepare
us to let go onr hold upon earth when our
time comes. 1 thank tho good Lord for so
gently tempering our life that wo becotno
reconciled to the change in duo time. When
wo are young aud buoyant it ia right we should

And now the muiie has begun aud I am
railed to help for they are getting up a family
dance ami firs. Arp and I always make the
music. They 1st ua do that???we are still use
ful and it would ho right hard for theso young
folks logo! along without us. Airs. Arpia fin-
ftra are atlll nimble nod m gracefully touch
the ivoty keys, as when I first worshipped at
her shrine thirty-six years ago aud went into
raptures over Kathleen Mavourncen and her
beautiful base! eyes???not Kathleen's cyea, but
lira. Arp's. And aha juat nearly died over
my soft dove like notes on the flute as I
rsrroled ???The Bweet Vale ol Avcca,??? or ???The
Irish Kmigraut'a Lament.???
But now when the young folks wish to
dance, we cbaerfully rrsiwid ami play a med-
hylhat has neither begtniug nor ending, for
It juat goes on and oif and round and round,
and to a fantastic foutaela that is an original
mixture of Dixie and ltun Nigger Hun, aud
the Bobtail Nag and Come Out of tho Wilder
mss and the Arkansaw Traveller aud High
land Fling and Up in a Balloon Boys, and
acme . others of like lile and
and measure. Oh, we make
aio we do, and the children always
cheer us and thank us to rapturously that we
try U again when tiny call ua and get ready
for the next set.
Aid now tho programme changes again and
we have music with pong.Vmincer liogeca touch
the key and the family choir gets round the
piano and cheers the wee ??? me 11 hours with
melody. The old standard songs are stil l

Oneol the Christmas institutions of Elberton
thirty years ago, waa ???Thomas's negro Insur
rections.??? These occurred usually first or sec
ond night in the Christmas holidays. Major
F. J. Shannon was town marshal, and Thomas
president of tho ???board of commissioni,??? as
tho town council waa then denominated. Tho
day prior to the insurrection Thomas would
hand the marshal a list of names of his personal
ft fends with instructions to notify them that tho
nrgTocs were going to riso next night, and tho
men were summoned to he and appear at
Thomas's law c ilice, over Mr. Vaifo's tailor
shop, at precisely V p. in., to assist in quelling
the uprising. The notice and summons wero
accompanied by an injunction of socrecy that
the negroes might not be forewarned. At tho
appointed hour tho polico force wero
on hand ready for service. When all
wero in tho door was locked and tho koy
C ut in Thomas???s pocket. Then tho men
ere informed that it would require great
courage to fare the foe, and tho first thing in
order was to take something to keep the spirits
up. On n long table in tbo mfddlo of tbe
office ???Bert??? was ordered to place tbo ???need
ful," when the back-door was opened and in
earne glasses, dimijohns of old bourbon, pure
cognac and baskets of champagne. The bour
bon and tho cognac wero old and oily, and
w mellow that in drinking it <fno
wns reminded of the golden
nectar of tbe fabled gods of antiquity. Borne
of those who dronk it used to asy they wished
their throats were a mile long, just to enjoy
the exquisite taste. A tablespoonful would
tingle the very tins of ??ne'e lingers and make
him feel as though bn were in the third story
of his earthly paradise. But in those dayp wo
had no counterfeit men or women; and the
liquors men drank were pure and unadul
terated, and if one got tight on such
drinks, ho did not feel much tho worso for
wear the next day; and no delirium tremens
ever occurred. But great advances have been
made in civilisation since those good old days:
and whisky is now rnado of strychnine and
tobacco stems. Cognac is made of poor alco
hol, arsenic and Spanish flics. Fort wine
is made of apple vinegar and logwood, and
champagne is a mixturo of hard cider aud
???sour mash.??? These flno liquors of this day
of light are far ahead of the old kinds, but
they make mere drunkards, inoro delirium tre-
mens.inore suicides, more ers/y men and moro
cranks, more dithonrat men, moro counterfeit
men, more men iu jail aud less outside, and
more?????????
Well, by order of our chief, the goblets wero
filled to tne brim, and drank standing, after a
suitable toaat. Tbon the social jovial ohat went
round until the order came to fill tho flowing
bowl and drink's second health. Each mau
waa closely watched by the chief and had to
do his ftdl part in putting down tho ???Insur
rection.??? Now, the mighty discussion filled
up the hour, during which ???Bart???
would bo missing. After a space, the
dear would bo opened, guarded by Major
Bhannon and his assistant. George Allen, that
no one might escape, and iu oomes ???Bart" '
with a long server loaded with fat turkoyl,
de ne uplu a style that none but a good soutty-
ern hcusewlie can Imitate. It tnakos my
mouth water even now just to think of the
luscious rooked viands of thoao good old
days. Then came the hoi bis
cuits, and rich cakes, and hot coflee,
tie., till tho table groaned under tho
load. Bnt beforo the feaucommenced another
cheer must betaken from the sparkling cham
I???Sgnc, tho chief always Irading tho van. Then
Joy to and erflpty the table of its rieh edibles.
And thus tho bourbon, cognac, turkey and
rhampsgna were intermingled with jokes and
hilarity until the ???wea short "hours ayont
the twel,??? when all who were able to do so ro-
tlrc??k to thxir homes and tho insurrection
ended. .

Chicago, December 27.???It is learned that an
armed guard was alationed at tho first regi
men! armory on Wednesday night, dcspUo the
assertion to tbo contrary made by oomeofthe
officers. Ob Christmas eve a party waa given
by one of the companies, and in the course ot
??? fc&yepiation it waa suggested that it would
to a ywt easy matter fbr a body of men to
enter the building and capture th?? arms. The
demonstration made by socialists on Thanks
giving day, at which the black dag-was
displayed for Ihe first time in Chieago was
talked ebout, ??? nd some one said that a more
violent demonsU.'Oion might occur that night,
inhere was to be an outbreak it would ha
improvident to have the armory unprotected.
Finally, ten men volunteered to remain on
guard during the nig.M, and the adjutant
ordered ten rounds of ammunition i?? be
