WAR TIMES RECALLED.
AFavrfftanzas From Some Old Confederate
War Songe.
M. M. Folsom, In Valdosta, Ga. Time*
The fresh young lips that wubled the aonga
of twenty years ago have grown withered and
sere; but in the heart of many a dignified
matron atilt lingers the echo of those stirring
strains.
A few of the old “war longa" havo survived,
Euch songs as "Dixie," "Maryland, my Mary
land," and others belong to the immortals.
While flows tbe blood in a southern heart,
their wild melody will esaietbepulse to quick-
cn; snd when the band strikes "Dixie" tha
response is generally the same old "rebel yell"
thatnervedtbearm ol Stonewall Jackson's
“foot cavalry.”
The firat time I overheard "Dixie" it wu
played on an old lime fiddle. I had a dear
uncle who lived on Mud Swamp, in Lowndes
county. Ha wu home on n furlough, and hia
time expired tbe next day. So Uncle Ben took
out his well loved violin and treated us to
matte. He wu n firstrmte performer, end I
•hell never forget the thrill I experienced
when be etruck up Dixie. Tho old fiddle al
most spoke the homely lines:
'In Dixie's land whar 1 wu borit In.

Look away for Dixie's land.”
' The plaintive rythroe of the long as they
rots and fell awoke the echoes, and a startled
mocking bird ottered n few short notes in
"Away down south in Dixie I" The notes
went ringing out through tha dark pine woods
and were rs-echoed Horn n gloomy awatnp
where a greet owl uttered the sombre quergy,
“In who? to whof"
Uncle Ben left next day and never came
beck.
How often have I heard tbe brave boys sing,
with a suspicious quiver that 'sounded almost
like e sob:
•Tin lonely alnce I crowed the hills
For the girl 1 left behind mo.”
And bow often waa it the cue that the brave
laddie never ceme beck, but left tbe deer one
behind forever end for ayo, to weep till her
young heart broke for the aoldier boy whose
form wu left to moulder liy Shenandoah's
bloody torrent.
And how the girlt used to sing:
