taken place about midnight on Tuesday.
The story wu told lu tlio city yesterday moraine,
by John Motley, a well known farmer at that sec*
tlon of the country, who claims to have witnessed
the beginning of the outrage, and by hla wife and
hla son, who are the parties to whom the whip
ping la alleged to have been administered. The
facta as narrated by these parties are as follows:
On Tuesday night, about it o'clock, John Mot*
ley, Ben Silas, Mary Silas and Manual Silas laft
Motley's, where they all live naarthe Fairfield
Hue, for Columbia, with two bales of ootton,which
they Intended to sell here. Mary 8Uas and her
son Manuel were on tbe wagoa which carried
Motley’s bale of cotton, the boy driving and
Mary sitting on tbe bale. Ben Hilts followed driv
ing a cart in which waa hla own bale of cotton.
Motley followed at a few pace* behind on toot. In
tbla order they had gone about five mlloa, when
they ware suddenly surrounded bya body ot men,
about twenty-flvo or thirty In number, who di
vided into three squads of six and eight, each

lays he went up and laid to them, "gentlemen,
don’t beat them so. they are working for me,"
when one or two of the party made toward him,
