What Young Ladies Should Do. Phillatlelphia Record. l)o be natural. A poor diamond is better than a good imitation. Do trv to be accurate, not onl> for vour own sake, but for the sake of vour sex. The incapacity of the fe male mind for accuracy is a standard argument against the equality of the bo observe. The faculty of obser vation, well cultivated, makes practi- cal men and wamen. . Do try and be sensible. It is not a particular sign of superiority to talk like a fool. , , , Do be ready in time for church. 1 you do not respect yourself sufficient ly to be punctual, respect wie feelings of other people. ...... Do avoid causes of irritation in your familv circle; reflect that home is the plaee to be agreeable. Do be reticent; the world at large has no interest in your private affairs. .. , Do cultivate the habit of listening o others; it will make you an invalua ble member of society, to sax noth ing of tin* advantages it will be to you when you marry every man likes to talk about himself; a good listener makes a delightful wife. Do be contented; “martyrs" are de testable; a cheerful, happy spirit is infectious: you can carry it about with you like a sunny atmosphere. Do avoid whispering: it is as bad as giggling. Doth are to be condemned; there fs no excuse for either one of them. 11 you have anything to say, say it; if you have not, do hold your tongue altogether. Silence is golden. Do be truthful; do avoid exaggera tion. If you mean a mile, saya mile, not a mile and a half. If you mean one, say one, and not a dozen. Do sometimes at least, allow your mother to know better than you do. She was educated before you were born. PATENTS GRANTED. Kv.. S. C. Aches and pains long borne make even the young feel old. The true remedy is Parker's Tonic. It purifies thebiood, sets in order the liver and kidneys, banishes pain and builds up the health. Besides it lias the repu tation of doing what we claim for it. 43 lino. ♦ 1 MP1U >VED COTTON SEED. ■JOCKS' LOXG STAPLE UPLAND PROLIFIC. It is not our custom to call atten tion editorially to particular adver tisements, and do so now not so much in The interest of the advertisers as in the interest of our readers. We have seen a sample of the staple of the above named cotton, which is indeed remarkable as an upland pro duct. We invite, elsewhere, tile at tention of our readers to the impor tance of improving their farm seeds by the purchase of improved varieties and subsequent careful selection. The difference of several cents to the pound in the price of cotton is an im portant matter. Mr. H. P. Jones showed us several letters received from large spinners at the North to whom samples of the lint of this cot ton was sent for inspection. The impression conveyed by these letters was that if this long staple up land could be purchased in large quantities it would supply the place and would be used for the same pur pose as the Sea Island cotton. We will plant a small plat of this cotton this spring by the side of several oth er improved varieties and have the staple priced by experts next fail and report resiflts. If this staple will bring three cents per pound more thau the ordinary upland cotton, its cultivation all over Georgia ’would make a.difference of $<‘>,000,000 in the value of The crop of the State. Those who plant the improved va rieties should have them sufficiently far from other varieties to prevent mixing. What distance will be ne- cessary for this we are unable to say from any practical observation. Will some one who has given especial at tention to tnis matter report in our April number. Dr. W. B. Jones, of Burke, can probably tell us.—Ex change. Wonderful Cures. XV. 1). Hoyt A Co. Wholesale and Retail Druggists of Rome. Terrific storms occurred throughout France. Near Montpelier vineyards have been destroyed. The damage is placed at 1,000,000 francs. A hurricane passed over the town and partial v destroyed j it. Several parsons were killed and a number injured. Severe gales have also been experienced in Germany. Two ships that were lying in the river Oder foundered, and five persons were drowned. A cyclone which passed over Lonado, a town of Lombardy, destroyed a large number of houses. Five persons were killed. * INTRODUCTION OFCATTLE INTO AMERICA. The first herd of cattle known on the continent of America was brought by Columbus on his second voyage. From these, and from other small herds brought by latter Spanish navi gators, tlie wild cattle of South America descended. In 1553 the Por tuguese took cattle and hogs to New foundland and Nova Scotia. The Canadian cattle were introduced in 1(508. In 1620 Virginia had 500 head of cattle. The most stringent laws were passed prohibiting the killing of any domestic animal. In New Eng land cattle were introduced In 1724. It is said that for a time price was regula ted by color, a red calf being cheaper than a black one because it was more likely to be mistaken by the wolves for a deer and killed.—Chicago Times.
