UNION & RECORDER. Tile Stature of Liberty.—The 'French Senate has appoointed Adini- asiral Jaubas and General Pelissier to represent that body at the dedication .*? the statue of Liberty at New York. The Bulgarian Crisis.—The Rus sian Consul, in Bulgaria, has sus pended relations with the Bulgarian tSovernuient pending instructions. It ■as reported that the Russian Govern- wcnt is preparing a note to the pow- which will be the forerunner of decisive measures in Bulgaria. Mineral Springs at Athens.— fbe Banner Watchman: Within and ajorrounding Athens, are a number of die finest mineral springs in the South, and any desired water can be ItskL The sulphur spring at the res **rvoir, is the latest discovery, and its "water has already effected several svonderful cures. Germany.—Germany from all ac counts is putting her army in best trim. The French General, Boulan ger, seems to be in a fighting mood, oat Mr. Grevey, the great and cool- Jaeaded President of the French will sheck anv undue movement towards lareaking the peace. The French will lie apt to follow his wise counsel. Arbitration—The best arbitration us that which results from conferen ces between employers and employed. Both do wrong when they submit their differences to a body called the Knights of Labor, or to any similar organization. If they cannot agree it is far better to submit their differ ences for settlement to some sound "business men who are their neighbors will do justice to both. At a recent lecture delivered in Philadelphia by a prominent scien tist, the gentleman said itlakes a pro- tip-ions amount of vegetable matter -f-o form a layer of coal; that the pres ent growth of the world would make Laver only one-eighth of an inch thick, and that it would take 1,000,000 vears to form a coal bed 100 feet ’thick. Cluverius Re-sentenced. The counsel, for this unhappy young man, failed to obtain a new “rial, the Supreme court of Appeals, of Virginia, having refused a new hearing in liis case. He was found ^rvjiltv of the murder of Fannie Lillian Madison and sentenced to be hanged sometime in September last. The de- i&y, and failure to obtain a new trial, rendered necessary for him to be re- sentenced, and the court, below’, has appointed the 10th of December next, ■for his execution. When asked by Ur? Judrre if he had any thing to say ’why sentence should not be passed sxponhi.n. he replied in a low’ tone. sir, nothing more than I said be- -Jore." .Judge Atkins then, without Asiy preface, pronounced the death the execution to take place cm the day already stated. The pris oner was then remanded to jail. More Shocks in Charleston. A Charleston special of the 9th gives an account of more shocks in that citv and at Summerville. They began on Thursday night, and on Fridav rite 8rh developed much addi tional force. The first occurred at 12:35 a. m.. the second at 1:50 a. m. This was a sharp and distinct shock, -.accompanied by the usual trembling of the earth anil subterranean rumb ling. Another shock took place at :1:40 a. m.. lmt exhibited less violence. Reports of shocks were made from the surrounding country. These occur rences had a very depressing influ ence upon the people, and very rea sonably, for it shows the existence, still, of serious internal convulsions which may at any time increase in violence. A slight increase may en- langer houses that were not injured before, and render useless much of the work of repair which has been so rapidly going on. The situation is very lamentable and distressing. A Terrific Storm. A terrific storm is reported to have .swept over Louisiana, Texas, and other States, Tuesday night. The town of .Sabine Pass, at the mouth of Sabine river, and a little between Louisian and Texas was totally de- -stroyed and more than fifty people drowned. Many lives were lost at -Johnson’s Bayou, another place total ly destroyed. The storm did an im mense amount of damage, which it has been impossible to ascertain the particulars of at this time. In Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky ‘ind Alabama it was very severe. Great loss of property and distress is re ported. the full particulars of which will be horrifying. What True Merit Will Do. ^ The unprecedented sale of Boscliee’s German syrup within a few years, has astonished the world. It is without doubt the safest and best remedy «.ver discovered for the speedy and effectual cure of Coughs, Colds and the severest Lung troubles. It acts xn an entirely different principle from the usual prescriptions given by Phy sicians, as it does not dry up a cough and leave the disease still in the sys tem, but on the contrary, removes the cause of the trouble, heals the parts affected and leaves them in a purely healthy condition. A bottle kept in the house for use when the diseases nutke their appearance, will save doc- 6 bills and a long spell of serious tltoese. A trial will convince you of «hese facts. It is positively sold by all druggists and general dealers in wie land. Price, 75 cents, large bot- 16 eow. ingbain, 472 W. HOW THE NEW YORK KNIGHTS OF LA BOR ENJOYED THEMSELVES IN RICHMOND. A reporter went up there last night to interview Tarrell, but the colored delegate did not wish to be given any newspaper notoriety. After telling about the place and its surroundings the reporter has this to sav; Then a peculiar scene presented it self. There could be seen social equal ity in its richest phase. In the room were several white men and four young colored women. One seated at an organ playing was the source from wliich emanated the soprano notes. Another was seated by her side turning the music for her. In the room, on a sofa, was seated a bright mulatto girl talking and laughing with a white man, while in another part of the room were anoth er colored girl and a white man ehat- ting, the man holding or playing with the girl’s hand. There is a delegate stopping at the St. Charles Hotel named Joseph Ed wards, who is from New York. He was given accommodation in that part of the hotel set apart for colored servants accompanying guests, but it is reported that some of his white col leagues took him in their room last night, and that he peacefully snored there until morning.— Richmond State.
