Twilight Thoughts.
Selfishness is 1110 most fruitful
source of human woes.
So live tlmt, the world will be better
because you lived in it.
The absence of dram-shops uas dis
banded tin* * loafers’ brigade and good
must follow.
There is but one way to increase
vour worldly goods and that is to
spend less than you make.
It requires some self-denial to be a
gentleman. Those who give » loose
rein to all their passions and appetites
sink to the level of the brute creation.
Give us, OLord, the patience, wis
dom and oourage to discharge faith
fully the duties of this Life! Lot not
the pleasures of the world nor the
eares of bread-earning lure us away
from the road that leads to Heaven.
Pleasant memories are the most de
lightful of companions and afford
more solid comfort tliau rich relations
or even a bank account of your own.
If you would have them you must
live right yourself and help others to
overcome evil.

Mu. Editor:
Vv T e have taxed your columns many
times, and perhaps your patience also.
Presuming upon your good nature,
we beg to be indulged once again.
Below we give you the appeal of a
fond and loving wife to, perhaps, a
dissolute and unloving husband. The
appeal is very touching, and ought to
reach the most obdurate heart.. This
most beautiful piece suffers the fate
of many others as beautiful—it is
without paternity. It has been In my
possession for the last eighteen years,
un<l I have not seen it in print, since
the time it fell into my bands. I hope
it may be the means of reclaiming
some wanderer and cause him to re
turn to the loving wife, with the de
termination, never again to wound so
fond a heart. W. H. 8.

There was another terrible railroad
accident on the 14th. This one oc
curred near Boston, Mass., a passen
ger train suddenly falling through a
bridge, and about thirty people being j
killej. Without any premonition the
bridge fell through and live coaches
heavily loaded with passengers, were
precipitated to the ground below.
The bridge was over a wagon road.
Prompt action on the part of those
who were unhurt, prevented a con
flagration. The accident was awful
enough as it was, a number of peo
ple being pierced through with splin
tered timbers while others were crush
ed to death. The engine ami the two
coaches at the rear of the train re
mained on the track unhurt, the mid
dle of the train falling in.

A BURGLAR S BULLET KILLS HIS COM
PANION IN CRIME.
From the Macon Telegraph, 10th.
Dublin, March 14.—On the night of
the 11th Mr. Joseph Perry, an old and
respected citizen of this county, who
resides only four miles from Dublin,
was aroused from sleep by the viol lit
breaking in of bis room door and the
entrance of two men. He was at once
attacked by one of the intruders,
but defended himself so vigorously
that the man called upon his compan
ion to shoot. This demand was at
once responded to, but the semi-dark
ness of the room and the rapidly
changing positions of the struggling
men prevented him from aiming accu
rately, and his bullet, instead of mur
dering a harmless old man, pierced
the heart of his criminal companion,
who loosed his hold of Perry and
staggering out into the yard, fell dead.
Tlie murderer, as soon as he saw tlie
result of liis shot, lied away into the
darkness.
Mr. Perry, unaware that one of the
men was dead, did not venture out of
his house till morning, when tie found
that tlie face of tlie (lead man was
covered by a mask. The coroner wus
notified, and on examination, it wus
found that the dead man was S. T.
Tipton, a neighbor of Perry's, and
who for several years had held the
position of constable in tlie district.
The other party who escaped is be
yond cavil or doubt .Joseph M. Weav
er, the young limn who was convicted
of larceny from the store of ,). T.
Hinitii, a merchant of this place, at
our January term of the Superior
Court and sentenced to tlie peniten
tiary for fifteen years and escaped from
jail the day prior to tlie coming of a
guard to accompany him away. He
made his escape hy boring through
the walls of the jail with a two-inch
auger.
Mrs. Tipton, the wife of tlie man
killed, says that Weaver ate supper at
her husband’s house on the night of
the killing, and that her husband and
Weaver left together. She says far
ther that the father of young Weav
er, S. L. Weaver, of Dublin, was with
the two men during the evening, and
told them to go to Perry and rob him
and, if they could not get. the money
otherwise, to kill him. Tlie object in
getting the money was for young Weav
er to escape with. Mr. Perry, who so
narrowly escaped being robbed and
murdered, married tlie sister of old
man Weaver’s wife, and hence the
young mail Weaver intended to mur
der his uncle. Sheriff Scarborough
at once summoned a posse and began
a search for Weaver, but was unable
to find him. He, however, succeeded
iu finding the hiding place of Weaver.
Tlie Sheriff went to the place of An
drew Hobbs and demanded that they
be allowed to seach liis premises.
Hobbs at first resisted, but finding
Sheriff Scarborough determined, final
ly gave in. In the gin house they
found Weaver's hiding place, such as
bedding, clothes, etc., and among
them some of Weaver’s papers. Mr.
Hobbs has heretofore borne a good
reputation, and is at this time a jury
commissioner of Laurens county.
Warrants have been issued for the ar
rest of Hobbs, old man Weaver and a
man named John Kuflleld, charging
them with harboring Weaver.
Young Weaver is a bad man, and it
is hoped tlmt be will be captured. lie
is tall, of light complexion, with light
early hair and blue eyes, and very
good looking. He lias pretty, white
teeth. The neighborhood is greatly
incensed at the disgraceful act.
APPLICATIONS FOR BLOODHOUNDS.
Atlanta, March 15.—Marshal Star-
tin, of Dublin, Ga., applied here today
for bloodhounds to track a desperate
burglar convict named James Weav
er. Some time ago Weaver was sen
tenced to fifteen years in the peniten
tiary for burglary. He was sent to
the Dade coal mines. He was taken
back to Dublin as a witness in a case
down there and managed to make his
escape.
Mr. Martin Inis heard of the where
abouts of,Weaver and proposes to uti
lize the bloodhounds in capturing
him.
