LAW AND ORDER
Pursuant to a call, a number of our
citizens met at the Court House
1 hursday night for the purpose of
organizing for the suppression of the
violation of the prohibition law of
this county. The meeting was called
to order bv Judge D. H. Sanford ami
Dr. 1. O. Powell was elected Chair
man, and T. H. Morris, Secretary.
By request, the meeting was opened
with prayer by Rev. Donald McQueen.
Col. Miller Grieve then stated the
object of the meeting, and dwelt with
emphasis upon the necessity for a sup
pression of the violation of this law,
mentioning the fact that opeu and
flagrant violations were going on
g ublicly, and in the knowledge of all.
Ie submitted the following preamble
and resolutions to the meeting:
Whereat., the illegality of the liquor
traffic in Milledgeville has been fully
established by the laws of the State,
the vote of our people and the deci
sion of the Supreme Court, and
Whereas, in defiance of the law and
the popular will, certain parties do
continue the corrupting traffic, se
ducing the unwary and the infirm,
therefore,
Resolved 1. In the name of the law,
before which we are all equal and to
which all right-minded persons arc
cheerfully obedient, we call upon
the official conservators of the peace,
county and city officials, to suppress
this crime against law, virtue and de
cency.
Resolved 2d, We request
lowing worthy citizens
if
committee with or without the co-op
eration of the officers of the law' to
search out and prosecute every viola
tion of the prohibition law, to-wit:
Arthur Carr, M. Hines, T. S. Bagley,
C. G. Wilson and T. H. Morris.
Mr. Grieve was followed in a speech
by Capt. C. P. Crawford, who en
dorsed all that Col. Grieve had said,
and thought it the province and duty
of the officers of the law to suppress
these violations, but if they failed it
was incumbent on each citizen to
take an active part in it. Eaoh mem
ber of the City Counoil Mid the May
or were Justices of the peace, and it
was their sworn duty to suppress
these violations, and restore that
equality between citizens which vio
lations of this law disturbed.
The resolutions were unanimously
adopted.
On motion the Chairman was au
thorized to add five more names to
the committee appointed.
The meeting then adjourned to
meet again Thursday night, two
weeks hence, and resolved to contin
ue their meetings every fortnight un
til these violations were entirely sup
pressed.

A Dangerous Accident-
Vi’e learn from Mr. Win. R. Morris
that on Tuesday last, Miss Sallie Babb,
daughter of Mr. llanse Babb, who
lives in this county, near Morris’ Mill,
sustained a very serious accidental
injury. She is about eighteen years
old and was enguged burning trash
in a field when the skirt of her dress
caught fire. Finding she could not
extinguish it, she, like most women
do under like circumstances, ran off.
Her sister Julia, who was u year or
two younger, ran after her and hav
ing caught ap with her, threw her into
a branch and put out the fire after her
clothing had burned up to her waist.
Though her injuries are of a fearful
character, it is hoped that she may
recover. Dr. Crowley is her attend
ing physician.

Milledgeville Light Infantry.
We are glad to note that the Mill
edgeville Light Infantry are diligent
ly drilling, to prepare themselves to
make a good record in the approach
ing State drill in Macon on the 13th of
May. Excellence in any thing can
only be attained by earnest anil per
severing effort on the part of those
seeking it. We are pleased to believe
that the Light Infantry feel their re
sponsibility as being the representa
tives of the Old Capital of the State
in the approaching contest between
the “crack” volunteer soldiery of
Georgia. They may feel assured that
their fortunes in the friendly strife
for honors and prizes will bo watched
with sympathetic interest by their
fellow citizens here in general and we
will venture to suppose by the young
ladies in particular. If any tiling
should be needed to incite them to do
their very best, surely this latter sug
gestion will accomplish it.
