UNION-RECORDER.
“CAUTION NON PROGRESSIVE.
Eimon Unun Uecokuku.
Y our avticlo on cautions men
in a town, wlion the commercial
prosperity of a place is at stake,
was quite to the point. Caution,
is not exactly the right word;
N ON -I’llOG 11EHKI ve is the word.
Caution is more of a personal
characteristic than anything else.
It relates to care, to warning,
prudence, advice, security, etc.
When viewed from the standpoint
of prudence, we have calculation,
deliberation, and discretion; you
nover saw a man of large caution
who was not more or less unen
terprising, unadventurous, and al
ways looking out for failure, where
he should see success.
Shakespeare, puts caution and
doubt in the same category, and
clearly makes n strong point:
“i mr iKuhts are traitors,
Atj.l make us lone the (tool at oft mt|!lt Win.
Ilf feai :ng to attempt
There are two classes of minds
in all communities which should
never bo called in for advice—
the old man, and the young man
too—especially, the old man who
is rich or comfortably off and has
enough to live upon without any
great exertion. The young man
is full of hope, takes a rosy hue
of everything, and thinks that
mere physical onergy can ac
complish anything. He wants
judgment, observation and ex
penenoe. His mind is liko a big
watermelon that looks well on the
outside, but very unripe in-
aide.
There is an isothermal lino in a
man’s life, which when he crosses,
you may cease to look to him for
j>rogressive ideas. Or I may say,
that after a man reaches his grand
climacteric, fill years, the turning
point of his life, when he loavos
the broad road of life, and enters
the lane, you noed not trouble
him. There is an innate feeling
in every heart, a kind of silent
monitor, an invisible thermometer
that says to him, your blood is
not as thick, or warm, or rapid,
or erectile as those who are in
the meridian of life. Tliero is
over before the old man’s eyes,
a dim shadow, that looks liko a
coffin or a grave, and though ho
may try to throw eff the feeling,
it is nevertheless there and over
present. Do not charge such as
too cautious, or too slow, or too
ivftppra’iutivo of their surround
ings.
There is an isthmus in human
life, in which we may look for
good thoughts and good results.
From the ago of 30 to 50 a man
is in his mental glory. He stands
between the rashness of the young
man, and the timidity of old age,
then he is capable of the best efforts
of his life. Ho then has the mind
to conceive, and the physicinl
ability to execute; the mind and
body then act in happy unison
and harmony. After that he be
gins to go slow, but sure, but not
aggressive.
As an illustration of the above
truths, I am prompted to give
tin- accomplishment of the build
ing of the Tybec Railroad to
th" oecuii. It is built f'
gn -it part ’Trough what is known
ns s.id-amrs’i, subject to over- I
How during wry heavy tides and
storms. Our old fathers, and
the "1>1 men of tin- city of Savan
nah -mid that it would be imposi-
bh to build such a road to Tyboe,
and for years it has been an ac
cepted truth and no one thought
of the attempt. Capt. D. G.
Purse, of this city, a man of
brains, force, onergy and originali
ty, in the meridian of lifo—about
45—said it could be done, was
laughed at as a droamer but not
doubting himself, ho went to work
■and to-day there is a tine railroad
to Tybee; it is a success and the
great thing needed to develop
the commercial resources of Sav
va nnah is an accomplished fact.
That it will bo a paying road has
already been demonstrated for in
a waok’s time after opening of the 1
'road, it has taken in about S5,-
0D0 passenger money, and as soon
as the cotton season opens and
warehouses and wharfs arc built,
then tho buisness will bo im
mense. So much for progressive
ideas, but old men would not
have undertaken such an enter
prise, nor could it be expected of
them.
Put when men who should bo
aggressive in ’all enterprises, aro
“pull backs," set them down as
wanting in broad ideas, an ener
getic spirit, and a narrow idea of
development. Some men cannot
see a project outside of their im
mediate business; and then again,
there are others of such very
broad ideas, that they would
bankrupt the world in their wild
{ irojects. From such, “Good
jord deliver us.”
Tho happy medium, is in tho
cool, sensible calculating man, who
sees, understands, and mellowed
by experienced observation, knows
what is praticable and what is im
practicable. You have such men in
Milledgeville, ask thorn to stop to
tho front.

The Coercion Act.
From a dispatch of the 2‘2ud

Tho Coercion act has received

Tomorrow half of ns may bo in

terday slander is heaped on
slanders hard against the repre
sentatives of the Irish people. It
is in such an hour—the hour of
calumny and danger—that the Li
beral party chooses to prove to
tho Irish party that they are no
holiday friends. Tho Irish peo

Cur readers have doubtless often
noticed that Hood’s Har.-aparilla is
well spoken of in the newspapers.
The press is quick to recognize merit,
and does not hesitate to give praise
where it is due. The following is from
tlie Baptist Weekly, a leading relig
ious paper:
“Advertising may bring an article
prominently before the public, but no
advertising can long help it if it lias
not real merit. Hood's Sarsaparilla
is well advertised; but the best proof
of its value is that so many persons
use it on the recommendations of
friends who have proved its peculiar
virtues.” _ [41m
Judge Adams has sentenced
Thomas Fogarty, the young man
who was convicted recently of
trying to kill Dr. Keiffer, of Sa

the penitentiary—the bill penalty.
The case will be appealed and it
will probably be some timo before
garty is sent up. He is in jail
default of $8,000.
