Lawyer Walker in
trict.
Hazzard's Dis
The Lunatic Asylum.
The attitude of two investigating
committee* sitting at the same time
in different rooms in this institution,
the one a special committee appoint
ed by the House, the other a joint com
mittee from the Senate and House
branches of the Legislature, is an an
omalous one, and has been the sub
ject of comment the last week very
•generally by the daily and weekly
press of the State. These committees
will report the result of their investi
gations to the authority appointing
them, when the public will be able
to get at the facts, whatever they
are, in regard to tlie present manage
meat of the Institution and the charg
es made by representative Kenan,
which have been submitted by that
gentleman. We take pleasure in re
producing the following article from
theCourant American, and unite with
; in the opinion that the report of
the joint Asylum committee will
be a complete "vindication of the pres-1
. nt management of tins institution |
of all the charges that have been pre-
f, rred by the representative from Bal
dwin county.
•When the committee appointed by
the legislature to investigate the state
lunatic asylum, will have made their
report, it will he found that that in
stitution is better managed than
any of its kind in the coun
try. J>r. Kenan, tho cause of
the dirty scandal concerning its man
agement, no doubt feels aggrieved at
bis dismissal on account of unbecom
ing conduct, from tho physicians’
board and takes this chance of get
ting even. We will wager our exis
tence that the committee will unan
imously agree that no more humane
men and Christian gentlemen exists,
than does Drs. Powell and Whitaker,
and the charges against them arc with
out foundation whatever. It is sad to
think that there is a single person
willing to lend his inlluence in tearing
down such an institution and its
management, an institution that com
mends itself to tlie good people of
the state. It will lie very hard to
convince the people that all is not
right at the Georgia lunatic asylum
so long as Dr. T. (). Powell is at its
head.’’

Mr Frank Walker, Woolfolk’s
lawyer, went out to tho Hazzard
district yesterday morning with
Coroner Hodnett. They left Mu-

o’clock. Returning, they arrived
in Macon about 1 o’clock.
When asked about tho trip,
Mr. Walker said: “I talked with
Mr. Chambliss, Mr. Smith and all
but one of the colored witnesses.
Mr. Chambliss was exceedingly
kind and courteous; and carried
mo to the liouso where the mur
der was committed, and explained
how the bodies were found. He
also carried mo to where the ne
gro witnesses lived that 1 might
talk to them. They were all of
ono opinion, and that was that
Tom Woolfolk committed tho
crime. T may say another thing,
and that is, those out there want
him hanged.”

support your insanity theory?”
