Why this is so we cannot always understand. In silmll places that’ is about all the wages they get for their public service and here in Milledgeville, we feel sure t he present Board lias been well paid in such currency and will all, at the end of tills term, retire on what we have earned. Now as we are on the eve of anoth er municipal election and as it may probably be of some service to those who feel a genuine patriotic interest in tiic future welfare of our city, we have bail the Clerk of Council to pre pare the following statements from his books, for publication: From Dec. 3rd 1884, to Deo. 2nd '85. These statements show that it takes not less than $10,000 to run this city a year. We have placed the follow ing estimate reasonably low. During tlie past few years the city lias had to spend more than tliat amount yearly. Since tiie city lias been paying $2,500 a year for school purposes, the City Councils have been able to make end’s meet by sale of lands. This will no longer do as u means of revenue as there are no more lands to sell. In 1885, Council sold in round numbers $8,300 worth of land. In 1880, $2,900 worth. The sale of land being an ex traordinary means of revenue and not to be taken into consideration hereafter—the following will give the public an idea of what is before us to rn 50, unless some new steps are taken provide for conducting city gove ment. Property lias been given tills year to the amount of about $5 000. Property tax, $2,500 Special tax, 1,000 Street tax 000 Insurance tax, 200 Gross sales, 1,000 Other sources, 700 $0,000 Last and this years Mayor’s salary was put at $300 and Clerk's at $450. But generally, Mayor's salary, about, $ 400 Clerk 000 Three Marshuls, 1,800 College, 2,000 Eddy school, 500 Lamps, 800 Streets, 2,000 Cemetery, 400 Incidentals, 1,500 $10,000 It tiierefore plain that it is impossi ble to make $0,000 pay about $10,000 of indebtedness. The present Board foreseeing this deficiency, applied to the legislature for a right to submit to popular vote the matter of increas ed taxation. Tnere will lie no defi ciency during our administration, but hereafter. We will wind up our term with the city out of debt. Tlie Dill introduced by the present Board lias become a law and soon will bo submitted to tlie vote of tlie peo ple for them to settle as they see tit. it was intended to cover the school appropriation, so ns to make the Col lege and Eddy School fixed on a per manent basis and the school fund re alized would not increase present taxes but change the present plan of raising it, that is, from an appropria tion by Council to a special tax by Council. It is our opinion that next year even, If the people vote in favor of this school tax, the coming City Council will also have to levy the same tax that the present Board has, in order to keep our place a town and not a village. Miliedgeville is not a heavily taxed city when compared with other places and if the usual con veniences, Ac., such as lights at night and working streets are kept up, it is not likely that such economy as has been suggested by several writers in tlie town papers recently will be wise and give satisfaction. Now, Mr. Editor, one more word. We are not candidates for Aldermen any longer. As members of tlie pres ent Board, we- have done our best and have often neglected our own business alTairs and other duties to go out and attend to city alTairs and are only too willing that somebody else should come forward aud do the same. We will heartily join in elect ing a good board for the next two years and hope we can get men to serve who will give our little city a vigorous shove on the road to im provement and growth. Prohibition has changed the revenues and expen ses here, somewhat in that bar room licenses are cut off anil police court lines, etc., reduced. And we also know that some of the former expen ses, such as one extra policeman could be done away with but that only elianges tlie statusof alTairs relatively. H. E. Hendrix, M. R. Bell, A. J.
