Citizens, What’s the Use?
of pretending to be more than you
are?
Of trying to cut a ten yard suit of
clothes out of a yard of cloth?
What's the use of trying to be what,
you cannot be, or pretending to be
what you are not?
A man, or woman that will do these
tilings is culled a fool. Is a city less
a fool that does them?
What's the use of paying three hun
dred or four hundred dollars fora
mayor when a good one can be had
for t wo hundred, or for nothing?
What’s the use of such an expen
sive “outfit” as tile present tire com
pany'.' As well stick up a wooden
ship on that big ugly hell tower and
call tlie town a port of entry.
Why hire attorneys, or an attorney,
for three hundred dollars, or even for
one dollar, if you have to hire outside
attorneys to do tiis work, if it ever
happens that there is any to do—
which is problematical.
What's tlie use of hiring outside
men to help collect for the city or
help on street wogk, when you have
men already liirW, and under con
tract, to do tlint work?
Why go.ro heavy expense to keep
up wells in tlie streets at certain
points in the city away from tlie bus
iness eentrn, and not keep up wells
at all distant points in the city.?
WhereV the l ight in that? What jus
tice is it to the man who lias his well
in liis own yard to tax him to pay for
one in the street? If a neighborhood
wants a street well let tile neighbors
have it, but pay for it, and keep it up
without calling in tlie city to do it.
Let any tax-payer answer any of
tlie above questions, if he can. 1 will
he pleased to he corrected, if I am
wrong, in any point 1 have taken.

A New Enterprise.
Messrs. W. T. Conn & Co., have
inaugurated a Candy Factory in this
city, which is located at number .5
Hancock street just opposite the
Union-Recorder Oflice. It is a part of
their wholesale Grocery business
located on Wayne street. This is a
much nertled matter in Milledgeville.
•A very large amount of candy is sold
in tiiis market, much of which is not
wholesome to he eaten, and a good
deal poisonous. The candy turned
out by Conn &i Co., will have the
virtue of purity, and can be eaten
with impunity. The operation of
making candies is very pretty, and
the extreme nicety about tlie hand
ling of the sugary dough adds to tlie
attractiveness. Large numbers of
our people, to whom the making of
candy is a novelty, visited the facto
ry during the past week. Thu only
mystery about it that seems to puzzle
all uninitiated people, is how the
colors are got in so hnrmoniously,
and how the workmen can roll out,
with their hands, and so rapidly, long
sticks of a uniform diameter anil
circumference. The ladies and chil
dren will he much interested by a
visit to the Candy Factory, while it
is in operation. The Factory expects
to turn out 1,000 pounds pur day

Out In The Country.
At this beautiful season of the year,
on a beautiful day, such as last Wed
nesday was, it is a supreme joy to turn
one’s back upon tlie hustling busy
city ways, and drink the exhilarating
cordial of high woods and open fields,
and bathe body and soul in God's glo
rious sunshine. Such was our good
fortune on the lovely day alluded to.
But not alone in air, and sunshine, and
gorgeously painted woods, anil the
tinkling melodies of silver streams
rippling sweet tuurmurings, captivat
ing eye and ear witli the poetry of
nature, are the highest pleasures of
country life in Autumnal days to be
found. To be the guest of a refined
and intelligent woman who is mistress
and master of her farm and home—
and such a home—where politics may
cease from troubling and contending
parties lower and fold their banners
as beneath tlie roof of a solemn sanc
tuary and in her company walk over
greensward and broad acres, now
through stables so comfortably ar
ranged for tlie care of stock and cat
tie during tlie winter cold; now in the
gin-house watching tlie fleecy lint
as it dances and whirls in grace and
beauty; now gazing into tlie restless,
circling steam clouds floating above
tlie golden current in the cane evap
orator, looking into monster ’tuter
patches, or romping with the young
colts on the green, or enjoying the
pleasures of the dinner table, where
“naught was new but all was nice”—
these environments, these stern reali
ties of country life chili tlie presump
tion of poetry and warm the stomach
while they gladden the heart.
There is no better medicine for a
pitiful sufferer from protracted disease
or one tired by long confinement than
a visit on a bright Autumn day to
some pleasant country home.
CITIZENS’ MEETING.
A meeting of tlie citizens of Mill
edgeville was held at tile court house
on Thursday night tlie 3d inst. The
meeting was called to order. Col.
Miller Grieve was elected as chairman
of tlie meeting and C. L. Mortis as
secretary.
Col. Grieve, upon assuming tlie
chair, stated the object of tlie meeting
to he to consider the question of city
government. Not to blame or to cen
sure any one, hut, as tlie exigency of
tlie case was upon tlie people, to de
vise ways and means for tlie future
government of the city.
The secretary wus requested to read
a communication from tho present
hoard of aldermen, upon the past man
agement of the city, published in the
Union and Recorder.
Captain C. P. Crawford was then
called upon to express his views upon
the situation of city affairs. Mr.
Crawford said that he had nothing to
offer ns a solution to tlie problem
before the people, that he did not
mean to or intend toeriticise the report
read or the actions of any man or set
of men. But upon the other hand
was desirous of expressing thanks to
those who had served tlie people in
tlie past and towardstliose who would
serve them in tlie future. It wasan ev
ident. fact, from tlie report of the
council, that the expenditures of tin-
city went far beyondits income. That
being a fact it was none tin- less a fact
that we are stranded. Fiuler these cir
cumstances what shall he done? It
would not do to sit still and do noth
ing. Something musthedone. There
were circumstances under which
tilings were to he done only by the
rule “do it.” Tlie only feasible plan
was to run tlie government upon a
schedule which would come within tlie
income of the city.
"The college must be maintained at
all hazards. It is the strongest card
we have. The increase and develop
ment of the city is due to the college.
Tiie rich legacy of lands given by
the State to tlie city are gone and are
no more a source of revenue. The
government of the city is worth just
what we are willing to pay for it.
This is abont the way in which I view
tlie matter; have nothing to offer as
a suggestion, hut consider that tlie
line upon which it has been run can
not be carried on. The present hoard
tells us so; it was not wrong to criti
cise public oflicers, hut all criticisms
should he fair and honest.
He had no ax to grind; only wanted
tlie city to prosper.”
The published report of tho aider-
men was some further discussed. A
motion was carried that tho Chair
appoint a committee of live whose
duty it shall bo to suggest a hoard of
aldermen for the next municipal elec
tion who will pledge themselves to
run tlie city government upon tlie
platform of keeping expenditures
within its income. The chair appoin
ted the following gentlemen upon tlie
committee: T.’H. Morris, Ben Den
ton, I. L. Harris, E. T. Ailing, A. L.
Ellison. This committee was ordered
to report at a meeting to be held on
next Wednesday night.
It was, moved anil carried that Lite
meeting adjourn until 7 1-2 o’clock
Wednesday sight, the 0th inst.
Miller Grieve, Chairman.
C. L. Morris, Secretary.
IN MEM0RIAM

To tlie W. M.. Wardens ami Brethren
of Benevolent Lodge, No. 3, F. A.
M.Brethren:
Your Committee, who were appoint
ed to prepare a suitable Memorial on
the death of P. M., J. M. Clark, beg
leave to submit the following report
as an expression of this Lodge on tlie
life, services and death of our beloved
brother, who departed this life on the
21st day of December, 188(1.
Resolved, 1st. In the death of this
estimable brother, our town lias lost a
good citizen, his chosen and life-long
profession a bright and incomparable
devotee and an earnest worker, and
Masonry an ardent supporter. Of
the numerous duties, responsibilities
and virtues inculcated by our Order,
he shirked none, hut came up to tin
foil measure of them all. Open, can
did, and free-hearted, lie was ever
ready to counsel his wayward breth
ren, to give wholesome advice, and to
extend charity to the unfortunate and
needy. Verify, a bright light in Ma
sonry lias been extinguished, who,
whether as Master of our Lodge or a
private member, always illustrated
tilt-tenets of our Order.
Resolved, 2nd. Wo mourn his loss,
as only Masons can mourn, and ex
tend to his bereaved fumily our con
dolence and sympathy in their great
bereavement, trusting that He, who
“tempers tlie wind to the shorn lamb,”
will be their protector, their shield
and defence.
Resolved, 3rd. That these resolu
tions be spread on oijr minutes on a
page inscribed to our lather’s Mem
ory, and that a copy of the same be
furnished tile surviving' members of
his family, and also a copy be fur
nished the Union & Rkcorkkr for
