Kl Prison. Eagle Pass, Laredo and
other border towns on the boundry
line between Texas uud Mexico. A
Mexican dollar is wortii only 90 cents
in the .United States and the Meii
,aus retaliate by only valuing one of
our dollars at 90 cents. A fellow goes
to a barroom ou our side atone of
these border towus and buys a drink,
and tlie United States liar keeper
gives him back a Mexican dollar. The
fellow then goes over to a Mexican
bar ami buys his drink and gives a
Mexican dollar. The Mexican bar
tender gives him a drink uud one of
our dollars for the Mexican dollar,—
Thus, he goes back and forth and
drinks ail day long; at night he has
either a Mexican or a U. 8. dollar and
is notout a red cent. If the fellow
chooses beer at 5 cents a glass, he
makes a niokle every time he buys a
drink. Of course tills will not work
unless he gets a Mexicau dollar at the
U. 8. bar and a U. 8. dollar at the
Mexican barroom.
A CROWING GEORGIA TOWN.
milledgeville developing
ON EVENT HAND. .
A Clean, Prosperous Busy City
With a List ot Profitable New
Enterprises—A Cotton Fac
tory Projected -Progres
sive Citium
Milledgeville, June 8,—[Special,
to Macon Telegraph.]—If you want to
,ee what a town is doing in the way
of progress, go away from it and re
turn in four or five years.
Four years ago I took a good,
square look at this place. It was my
duty at that time to book one of those
incidents that naturally occur occa
sionally, and in some cases the often-
er the better in all well regulated com
munities, namely, a hanging. While
awaiting the arrangements of the
preliminaries I booked the whole
town. At that time there was lit
tle to book in the way of enter
prise, but, to-day a good sized vol
ume would he required to tell what
has been doue.
’T19 A CLEANLY TOWN.
The first thing that struck me was
the cleanly condition of the town.
Macon is clean, but not a whit clean
er than Milledgeville. The next thing
to impress me was the “cltyish” ap-
pearauoe of things. The awnings
that were wont to shelter merchants,
who sat on careened chairs aud whit
tled, have gone, and the merchants
have no time now to whittle. I did
stump n y toe on a cellar door,
and by way of sympathy was assur
ed by MayorGliue that there would
be no cellar doors after the next six
ty days. “When you hear Mayor
Cline say that,” said Warren Edwards
some time later, “he means every
word he says.” And I believe it. In
the short time he has been mayor he
has rubbed out more country town
lines, scattered more eyesores and
brought the town out of the kinks
more than a dozen other men could
have done.
Now, what is better, the town Itself
is humping to keep up with the citi
fied ideus of the mayor.
AN “OMNIBUS” DUMMY.
A powerful but not silent dummy
buzzM through from the depot to the
asylum and Midway, and is a com
bination street car and freight train.
It carries the mail to the postofflee,
the express to the express office, all
sorts of freight to the merchants, and
with it all finds time to trans
port carloads of passengers. It lias
paid like a.little gold mine, and mon
ey oan’i buy it.
THK LIGHT or THK AUK.
Four years agon dark night was
made worse by suiokv kerosene lamps
placed at odd corners. Now odc of
the neatest aud best electric light
quiputents lights up the city equal
to a ball moon. The plant now com
rises a 300 light maohiue, but such
right and pretty light tickled the
people so that an order for a 600-light
maohiue has been placed.
MANY MONEY-MAKING ENTERPRISES.
The same enterprising men have an
oil mill that would do credit to the
biggest city iu Georgia, and there’s
talk of another,
An ice factory not ouly turns out
enough ice for Milledgeville uml the
surrounding country, but has some to
are for Macon, and is shipping to
that point every day.
Warren Edwards, who, by the way
is a genius, has a complete bottling
works establishment aud had iu his
hand, while I was talking to him, au
order from Macon for 300 oases of
bottled soda.
THE COTTON FACTORY WILL COME.
The next thing on deck is a cotton
factory. The people have figured
and met and talked, aud subscrip
tions have been made Let it be
put down that Milledgeville will have
a $100,000 cotton factory before this
time next year.
THE SECRET OF SUCCESS.
And so it goes. There are real {un
deniable, unimpeachable evidences of
thrift anti progress everywhere. There
are lots of good public-spirited citi
zensovtr here, and they are all the
better for being willing to let their
dollars go without kissing the eagles
on the good bye. It is a nigh license
town aud believes in barring nothing
out that makes business if it can
be controlled. I haven’t seen a more
prosperous, well-fed, comfortable and
contented people “since the woods
were burnt.” It does me good to so
note it.
