5 Free coinage means that the gov
ernment should coin silver as it
ioins gold, free of charge. There
,re now four coinage mints in
he United States. They are
ocated at San Francisco, New
•rleans, Carson City and I’hiladel-
iliia. Any man who will take gold
:o any of these mints may receive
lie gold in the shape of coin. Sil
ver is not recognized on the same
basis, and that is what the silver
aen demanded.
The Manufacturers’ Record of
December 13th says that the organi-
ation of new manufacturing enter-
irises in the south goes steadily on
notwithstanding the severe finan
cial stringency which restricts all
business operations throughout the
country. The indications are favor
able for an early improvement in
money matters, and then we may
look out for a very decided increase
in activity throughout the south.
With money (roubles promptly set
tled, the coming spring would show
greater developments than have
ever been seen in this section.
Every man is interested in keep
ing up a home paper. If a railroad
or factory is wanted, the newspaper
is expected to work for it. If a pub
lic meeting is wanted for any pur
pose, the newspaper is called upon
for a free notice. If any of the soci
eties have a supper or reception*of
anykind, the newspaper is expected
to give the necessary notice. The
newspaper must puff the schools
and everything else to advance the
interests of the business men of the
place, and then give them a hand
some notice win’ll they pass away.
And yet some of them “can’t afford
to subscribe” or do an^ r thing to
wards keeping up a home paper.
