E A vigorous and well directed ef fort is being made to have proper enlargements and extensions made in the buildings aud acoommoda* tious of the State Lunatic Asylum. At the last meeting of the Georgia Medical Association, held at. Ameri cas several weeks ago, Dr. R. E. Griggs, of Macon, moved the ap pointment of a committee, compris ing one member of tbe association from each congressional district to urge the general assembly to enact proper measures for the improve ment! of accommodations for the lunatic asylum. The motion was adopted unanimously and Dr. Griggs was made chairman of tbe commit tee, with the following physicians as members: M. L, Boyd, first district; P. L. Hillsmau, second district; J. D. Herman, third district; W. F. Westmoreland, fifth district, K. P. Moore, sixtli district; F. R. Calhoun, seventh district; John Uerdiue, eightti district; T. D. McKowan, Dinth district; H. B. McMaster, tenth district; M. L. Currie, elev enth district. The committee meeting has beeD called to be held at the Kimball House, Atlanta, at 10 o’clock on the morning of November 1, Each one is urged to be present, as the matter is one in which the entire state is interested and which demands iim mediate attention. Every intelligent man in the state realizes that Georgia’s present quar* ters for her insane are not large enough to accommodate the state’s unfortuuates. In almostevery county jail there will be found one or more uieu or women who have been adjudged insane, aud who cannot be provided with quarters at the asylum. Jails are not the proper place for the insane. They should be placed where they can be properly looked after, aud where tire proper medic-d treatmtnt from physicians expe* rienced in the practice can be had. The surrouudings aud associations of a county jail will increase and heighten insanity. The unfortunates cunnot be al lowed their liberty, for the lives of other people thereby would be jeopardized. The committee, when they meet on the 1st. will go to the legislature with strong appeal and petition, which must result iu an extentlon and ins crease of accommodations at the asylum.— Macon News.
