Growing Grapes m Georgia.
It is evident that a new interest is
beitig fHken in grape culture in this
state. This is exactly what we have
been hoping to see 'or several years.
The area devoted to grapes should 1
in the next two or three years be
increased a hundredfold. (Ivor the
larger part of Georgia it is on>* of tiie
surest crops we can grow in the way
of fruit.
While the grape will not grow in
soil that has been robbed of its fer
tility, stili it is a very easy matter to
so fertilize any inferior soil as to
make it produce grapes in perfection.
Many a little out of the way place on
a farm, that is hardly suited for corn
or cotton could be devoted to grapes
aud would make a splendid return in
this healthful aud nutritious fruit.
We have numerous varieties that
succeed perfectly in our climate, of
which it uiav he said that the Con
cord leads the van. The George
Morris Early, the Delaware, Perkins,
Wordea, ClintoD, Norton’s are all
approved varieties that have suc
ceeded in Georgia. There are still
other varieties that do well, such as
the Catawba, Diana, Hartford, etc.
The grapp is of easy propagation,
either by layering or cuttings, and
when one has made a start in grape-
growing, the extension in area is sim
ple and easy.
With the aid of ground bone and
ashes.and a mulch of pine 6traw or
leaves, it is not difficult to establish
and grow to perfection grapes on a
fair soil. Even old clay knolls have
been reudered fit for producing
grapes with comparatively little la
bor and expense. Well rooted plants
a year old set carefully in soil that
has been plowed and replowed until
it has become thoroughly fixed, plow
ing in a part of the fertilizer for a
width of furrow five feet and reserv
ing the rest for surface application,
will start a crop that must prove a
success in time if only the proper
care in cultivating aud pruning
given it.
Those of our readers who have not
yet giyen thought to this splendid
fruit should neglect it no longer. It
Vould be well to make a start this
fall, even if onlv a hundred or two
vines are put out. It will be a satis
faction in the highest degree before
many years come and go.

to my notice. I used it and will say
it is the only remedy that gave me
permanent relief and no bad result*
