President Cleveland will return to
the White House this week and it is
presumed, although not yet certain
that Mrs. Cleveland and the children
will accompany him. The White
House has been cleaned from cellar
to garret, a force of men having
been working from the day the Pres
ident and bis family left until Batura
day night, to brighten up things for
the winter season.
Secretary Carlisle has almost con*
sented to deliver several speeches in
Indiana and New York and the pres-
Mire is so great that there is little
doubt Unit he will in the end sue*
climb. It was not because be had
any objection to making speeches or
doing anything else that is proper to
aid the democratic party that he at
first declined to make these speeches,
but because he is very busy and ex
pects to continue so until after the
meeting of Congress, and because he
was so modest as to be unable to see
the importance that democrats all
ovei the country will attach to his
speeches. The last is the hardest to
overcame. By working overtime lie
can make up for time lost, but it is
difficult to convince a man as free
from anything approaching the big
head us Secretary Carlisle is that
anything lie may say or do will be a
powerful factor towards the success
of his party.
Secretary Gresham, who returned
from Chicago a few days ago, says he
found tlie democrats of Illinois in
better shape than lie expected from
newspaper accounts of the situation,
and t lint, tie thinks the party will
hold its own in the Congressional
districts anil wlil control the legisla
ture, which will elect Senator Cul-
loin’s successor. Now for a surprise.
1 have just learned from a trustwor
thy source that there is a strong
nrobabillty that Secretary Gresham
will speak, botli in Illinois and Indi
ana, before the close of the cam
paign.
Mr. T. O. Towles, a prominent offi
cial of the House, has just returned
from his home in Missouri. He has
carefully investigated the political
situation in the State and his judg.
rnent is regarded as gooi by all who
know of the accuracy of the predic
tions he has made in previous con
tests. He says that the democrats
are now working harmoniously all
over the State and are certain to hold
their own in Congressional districts,
and have a good fighting chance to
send a solid democratic delegation to
tiie next House. Missouri is one of
the states in which the republican
campaign committee has been figur
ing, or at least claiming to figure, on
big gains.
Every prominent democrat who
lias been in Washiugton for the last
two or three days endorses the action
of Senator Hill, in allowing the dem
ocratic State ticket to be printed on
tbe Union or anti-Tammany munici
pal ticket, as well as on the Tamma
ny ticket, as not only good politics,
tint under the circumstances abso
lutely necessary politics. They feel
that Senator Hill was perfectly right
in declining to makethesuccessof tbe
State ticket dependent upon the elec
tion of tlie Tammany ticket, as it
would have been had tbe State tick
et been printed only upon the Tam
many ticket. While the reports from
New York are lar from satisfactoiy
most democrats still are confident
that Hill will win.

As Described by Dr. Hartman, one of
the Greatest Authorities and
Writers on Catarrh.
The symptoms of chronic catarrh
vary according to the stage and lo
cation of the disease. The first stage
of catarrh of the uo-e and the head
produce discharge of the nose, sneez
ing, pain in the eyes and forehead,
weak and sometimes watery eyes, oc
casionally loss of memory. Iu tile last
stage the discharge ceases and dry,
offensive scabs form in the nose,
polypi growths sometimes form in
one or both nostrils, and the pain in
the head aud eyes is much less. Un
less something is done to prevent,
tiie catarrh will follow the mucous
membrane into the lungs, where it
wilt be followed by cough, night
sweats, rapid loss oi liesh, and tiie
other dread symptoms of consump
tion.
Pe-ru-na is a specific for every case
of catarrh, whether tie disease is lo
cated in the lungs, kidneys or stom
ach. The dose of Po-ru-na should
be a large tablespoouful before each
meal and at bedtime. Women and
some delicate men should begin with
a teaspoonful, and slowly and grad
ually increase to the aboye full dose.
