Letter From Eleanor Kirk.
Brooklyn, N. Y.. Nov. 20.1804.
BOG Greene Avenue.
A man who lied served a term in |
one of our prisous, and who bid re-]
pent* cl of IDs deed, was visited by j
the chaplain, wlio was cvenHy inlet*
ested in him, on the rlav of Ills re
lease. I he kind hearted minister
talked eloquently of a life beyond j
tile grave where all regenerate souls j
would be ultimately free and happy.
“That is till very well, Parson,”
said the convict, “but 1 want gome- j
thing to live by. 1 nni a young man. |
and the change vou call dentil may
be a long way off. A hope of some*
thing good fifty years ahead, per
haps, isn't going to help me today.
There >s an awful emptiness about,
hope, Parson.”
Here is a ease where the prisoner
let some light into the minister, and
the latter, though a pretty strict
Presbyterian, was willing to accept it.
“The boy was right,” he said, “and
it has made a difference in my tescli
inps *ver since. It was strange that
the emptiness of hope never struck
me before. It is realization we want
this day, this minute, and if we pos-
scss it we have all there is in the
present and the future. To realize
the goodness of God each day is lo be
sure of an eternity of goodness.”
This minister, so willing to learn
from a source so far outside the lines
of theological respectability, reveals
to us the child heart which in these
davs of dogmatism is a very beautiful
and a rare revelation.
’Man neveris butalways lobe blest’
blest,” Pope tells us, and this has
had almost as great an elY**,;* upon
the eth c« of the 11uin„ti race as any*
thing that has been found between
the coy* rs of the Bible, The thought
may have been an inspiration, but
to my mind it was never anything
but a clear anil true statement of a
very bad habit. Tlmt mi all-good
and all-merciful God ever intended
that bis children should be fed upon
the husks of hope, is a libel upon
His intelligence.
“If you con get time I wish you
would run in and see my wife, a
friend told me the other morning.
“What’s the matter,” I asked.
“1 dunno.” he leplied. “She is all
out of tix, but I cau se** no reason
for it. 1 gladly pay for all the help
she needs, but it seems that, she is
always overworked.”
I knew how that, man felt, and was
sorry for him. There are many
men who have my heartfelt sympa
thy. They haye no comfort with
their wives, and no enjoyment apart
from them, because they never know
what is to happen next. Well, I
strolled in after a while, and this is
what, I found. A woman, white as
chalk, with a wet towel rouud her
head sweeping a spare chamber. This
household consisted of a man, wife,
a daughter seven years old and two
servants.
“Why don’t you let Mary sweep
tills room?” I remarked.
‘Hhe lias swept it’ was the irasible
reply, “and look at that IliifT under
the bed. It is enough to make a
woman wish she was dead and out of
It all.”
“Hut, you wouldn’t be out of it
then,” I made reply. “You would
be in it just as much as you are now,
for if you were to slip into another
condition you would still have your
fussy disposition and doubtless the
same (lull under the bed.”
“I think you are horrid,” she ex
claimed. “It is all very well for you
to talk, who don’t know anything
about responsibility”—this was so
ridiculous that it caused ouly a smile 1
—“but I guess if you were expecting
your sister and iier husband next
week as 1 am, and had such a dirty
house as this is, you wouldn't be as
serene as vou are now. I’ve just u
pood minrf.to discharge Mnrv in the'
middle of her month, T never saw,
anybody so slack in my life.”
If our friends think I wasted any-;
time or bn nth i" this ease, they are ,
vt ■- much mistaken. Mnrv. a sweet j
faced, pleasant, mannered Irish girl
followed me to the front door. An |
eternity with her would bo prefera
ble to n week with her ini-tress.
“I’m so sorry I’m not giving sati--,
faction” she said, “hut Mrs. -
frightens m*> so that I really itMuno* j
do my best.”
There was the whole story in a nut:
shell, and I’m not ashamed »o say.
that I did try to com ort the girl!
who bad been so remiss as to le *vea;
little fluff tinder the bed. I am so j
glad that man in his iguorancej
is the only respecter of pers ms, and
that the heart of God is tender alike
to all.
The worth of this letter lies in 11h
app ication. The majority of the
inhabitants of the world are living
without the slightest reference to
the comfc rt and usefulness of I
the present hour. They are plan-j
ning for to morrow, for next
week, for next year, and a life be |
yond the grave. In this way they
miss all tile joy o( now, and that l-
all the joy we shall over know, be
cause to all eternity there can he
nothing but now.
