JOS. E. BROW ft DEAD.
Thk Distinggisiiiuj Sknaior. Du n
Fhidat at His Homk
in Atlanta.
Hon. Joseph E. Brown, ev*semit ".
ex-governcr mid ex chief ju-tii-.*.
died nt lilp heme in Atlanta last 1 ri
day afternoon, surrounded by his
family—wife, children and grand*
children. Ho was in the seventy*
fourth year of his ape.
Seuator Brown has been in feeble
health tor severs I years past, of
late he las not left his house, al
though not suffering from any s; e«
eifle malady. Death came ns the
legitimate ending of a busy, well*
spent life. Hit remarkab e career
was one of marked activity, and Id-
great powers of mind and body were
given to the public service during
nearly a half century in the mo.»t
eveutful period in the history ot the
state, llv his native intellect, great
energy arid wonderfu 1 will-; ower h
arose from the htnuble walks of life
to be a great hnder. He possessed
in a remarkable degree 111 e faculty
of concentrating his powers upon t.ie
business in haul. He was always
punctual and reliahls. and nothing
committed to iiis care stilfered from
neglect in its most minute details.
With th* numerous and heavy huts
dens placed upon his shoulders his
mental and physical powers served
him long and well. Worn ou' with
ong and faithful servise lie retired
to his home a few years ago, wliete,
surrounded by family and filends, he
has peacefully closed a lift' of great
usefulness and disflnetion—having
gained a prominence in (he history of
the e r.ntry that can he eqtiuibii by
few men.
While living, though differing with
the grout ieadi r on some points in
the days of reconstruction, no word
of abuse of him ever appeared in the
editorial columns of thi- i ape; no *
that lie is (lea i we would f.:n add a
tribute to tl e memory of the truly
great man.
In our next is.-ue we will publish a
sketen of his life. His history should
be studied by the youth of our state.
D v. II lie an inspiration to struggling
oung men.

Senator Brown, Governor Atkinson
