A Peculiar People, Oddly Dreued, and
Scenery of Extraordinary lleauty.
A queer race of men are these na
tives of Madeira. Mainly of Portu
guese origin, they clearly are a na
tion of half castes, and the negro
cross is conspicuous in their good
natured, ugly faces, in their stature,
tn their shambling gait and in their
ill knit frames. Their morality, too,
is said somewhat to partake of lax
ity. They are, however, by no moans
flagrant offenders and practice on
ly the lesser vices of pilfering and
lying—they would hardly be quali- j
tied to come under the generic head I
of dago without this latter failing— |
compounding, as it were, for their j
indulgence in potty larceny and
white lies by a rigid oconomy in
tlio greater crimes. Perhaps they
derive their standard of morality
from tho fact of their living on a
very small island—Madeira is only
40 miles long by about 10 or 12 in
breadth—for it is a noticeable fact
that tho dwellers on small islands
aro seldom given to marked enormi
ty of criminality, a man’s Nemesis
being, it is to bo presumed, too cer
tain to overtako him in a confined
space to make it convenient to per
petrate any very great wickedness.
The Madeiras; as a rule, wear no
peouliar costumes. The women cov
er their lioads with a handkerchief,
but otherwise their dress is about
like that of our villagers. The men
generally wear a clean white shirt
and white dnok trousers with a
broad brimmed straw hat. When
they do not wear this, tlieir head is
covered by a piece of gear which is,
I believe, original in Madeira. In
shape and size it exactly resembles
a common tea saucer; it is made of
black cloth and fits on to the very
point of tho baok of the head, cover
ing, of course, only abont a hand’s
breadth of its surface and being
kept in place apparently by nothing
but tho force of suction. This“cara-
puca, ’ ’ or skull cap, is put on and
taken off by a handle mndo of rolled
cloth which projects from its center
and stands up from the wearer’s
head. This handle is as thin and
half ns long as the stem of a long
clay pipe, and the general appear
ance of tho islander with one of
tlioso caps is ludicrous in the ex
treme.
Another peculiarity of dross is the
very general wearing of topboots of
yellow goat's leather by persons of
both sexes and all ages. Tho slippor
so often soon in many parts of Spain
and other countries along the Medi-
terannean would hardly do for tho
steep hills in Madeira, while tho ex
tensive growth of tho priekly pear
would mako going barefooted quite
impossible. Theuso of high boots is
thereforo sensible enough, but the
appearance of a littlo girl of 10 or 12
in a pair of topboots is apt to strike

Mr. A. H. Crausby is one of the best
known and most highly respected citi
zens of Memphis, and resides at 158
Kerr street in that city.
Some years ago his wife noticed a
small lump in her breast. She thought
nothing of it, but it increased in size
rapidly, and soon broke through the
skin and commenced to discharge.
She was at once put under treatment
of the best physicians, but they very
soon found that they could do her no
good, and simply prescribed antiseptics
to keep the place clean. Both her
grandmother and aunt, by the way,
had died with cancer, and when ap
prised of this fact the doctors said that
they would not attempt to save her;
that she was incurable. Although the
cancer had by this time become deep-
seated and her health very low, one of
the most noted specialists of New York
then treated her. After treating her
awhile, this doctor admitted that the

Tho chief interest of Madeira,
howover, lies neither in its inhabit
ants nor in its history, hut in tho
extraordinary beauty of its scenery
and the delicious mildness of its oli-
mute.
Its vegetation of all kinds is so
luxuriant and so lovely and its scen
ery is so varied and so beautiful
that one never tiros of going about,
and a return to Madeira every now
and again is looked forward to with
pleasurable anticipations.
I11 late years they have introduced
a railway to taka one half way up
the hillside to tho “mountain
church,” and any ono caring to bo
deprivod of lots of fun and varied
experiences in tho way of locomo
tion will choose the iron road. But
I10 who wants genuine old fashioned
locomotion will try a pony, a palan
quin or a sloigh. The first mentionod
differs very little from any othor
place where tho drivers all fight for
patronage and accompany the rider
in his rambles o’er hill and dale.
The palanquin is oxtromely comfort
able and is much indulged in by resi
dents, particularly those of the gon-
tlo sex. Two or four men, according
to tho weight to he carried, raiso a
long polo on their shoulders, from
which is suspended either a ham
mock or some othor affair in which
tho traveler lounges during tho trip.
There is a covering for tho head for
protection against tho sun’s rays,
and others for tho body to guard
against the winds. "What tho major
ity find most amusing is, howover,
the sleigh. Madeira streets aro paved
with little, round cobblestones,
worn m smooth as glass, and, in
stead of carriages, which aro only
now and again seen, they have largo
block runner sleds, with hooded
top •, drawn by oxen.—Chicago Rec

CRAWFORD & CRAWFORD,
case was hopeless and further treat
ment useless. “It is difficult to im
agine how despondent we all became,”
said Mr. Crausby, “knowing that she
must die and unable to give her any
relief. I had spent over five hundred
dollars with the best medical skill to
be had, and felt that there was no
further hope.
“One day I happened to read an ad
vertisement of W. S. S., recommending
that remedy for cancer, and in view of
the failure of the most eminent physi
cians in the country, I confess I had
little faith left in any human agency.
However. I purchased a bottle of S.S.S.,
and to my delight it seemed to benefit
her. After she had taken a couple of
bottles the cancer began to heal, and
astonishing as it may seem, a few bot
tles more cured her entirely. You can
probably better understand how re
markable this cure was when I explain
that the cancer had eaten two holes-in
the breast two inches deep. These
healed up entirely, and although ten
years have elapsed, not a sign of the
disease has ever returned, and wc arc
assured of the permanence of the cure,
which we at first doubted.
“As my wife inherited the cancer, I
certainly regard S. S. S. as the most
wonderful remedy in the world, and it
is truly a Godsend to those afflicted
with this terrible disease. You may
be sure that I shall always be grateful
to tl’.at remedy, for without it tny home
would now be desolate and my chil
dren motherless.”
The above is but one of many re
markable cures being daily made by
S. S. S. Cancer is becoming alarm
ingly prevalent, and manifests itself in
such a variety of forms, that any lump,
sore or scab, it matters not how small,
which does not readily heal up and dis
appear may well be regarded with
suspicion. We will gladly send to any
address, full accounts of several other
cures fully as remarkable as this one.
For real blood troubles, S. S. S. has
no equal. It wipes oijt completely the
most obstinate cases of blood diseases,
which other remedies do not seem to
touch. S. S. S. gets at tho root of the
disease, and forces it out permanently.
S. S. S. is guaranteed purely vegeta
ble, and is a positive and permanent
cure for Scrofula, Eczema, Cancer,
Rheumatism and all traces of bad
blood. Our valuable books will be
mailed free to any address. Swift
