In response to a call, a meeting of
citizens was held at the court house,
on Monday night, 4th iust, to dis
cuss the affairs of the city.
On Motion of Mr. G. D. Case.
Judge D. B. Sanford was called to
the chair aDd Mr. L. C. Hall re
quested to act as Secretary.
On motion of Mr. P. J. Cline, the
chairman was instructed to appoint
a committee of twenty five who
should meet Tuesday night and nom*
inata a ticket for Mayor and Aider-
men.
On motion the committee of
twenty-five was directed to report
to a meeting of citizens to be held in
the court hous*at7 o’clock Thursday
night.
REPORT OF COMMITTEE
At a large meeting of cit z?ns
Thursday night the committee,
through Mr. B. T. Bethuoe, sug
gested the name of Mr. Sol Barrett
for Mayor, and eleven other names
from which to select six Aldprmen.
Mr. Barrett declined, but was nom
inated with enthusiasm against Ins
protest.
The following ticket was nomi
nated:
For Mayor—3olomon Barrett.
For Aldermen—L C. Hal), Johu
Conn, Julius A. Horne, J. W, Mc-
Miilan, Chas. T. Whelan. Geo. C.
Smith.
For Clerk—P. L Fair.
The following resolution was unan
imously adopted by the meeting:
“Resolved. That it is the sense of
this convention, and they hereby
pledge themselves to maintain the
honor and integrity of this city by
redeeming the illegal bonds now
held by the Southern Bank of Geor
gia amounting to twenty-two thous
and dollars, besides interest.”
MR. BARRETT URGED TO ACCEPT.
A delegation of thirty or forty
citizens waited on Mr. Barren at his
residence on Friday night. Prof. J.
Harris Chappell was spokesman for
the crowd and in a few remarks urged
upon Mr. Barrett trie wishes of citi
zens in such a strong and captivat
ing manner, that he yielded and said
he would place himself in the hands
of his fellow-citizens.
' MR, BARRETT DECLINES.
After more mature delibera
tion, however, Mr. Barrett decided
that he could not and would not be
be a candidate for Mayor, and issued
a circular about noon Saturday,
saying, that uudar no condition
could he allow the use of his name
for Mayor.
Mr. Barrett has ior years been our
foremost citizen in “verytblng look
ing to the welfare of our city, and
the desire to make him Mayor was
intense among a large portion of
our 1 best citizens. This is not the
first time he has declined honors
which have been tendered him.
BEV. J. M. WHITE.
Next Sunday Rev. J. M. White will
preach his farewell sermon, and leave
on the following Tuesday morning
for the Conference at Elberton. He
has served the Methodist church in
this city acceptably for four years,
1890. 1891—1894, 1895. He is one of
the ablest preachers in the Confer-
en .ce—eloquent, instructive, enter
taining, he never fails to draw large
congregations. Socialh he is genial,
bright and happy. He has been a
faithful minister of the gospel and
has not failed to warn his hearers of
the sad consequences of sin, and
earnestly urged them to seek first
the kingdom of Heaven. He does
not expect to be returned to this sta
tion, but a Methodist preacher never
knows where lie will be sent. His
own congregation and the people of
Milledgeville generally would be de
lighted if lie and his charming family
were permitted to remain another
year in our midst. Any church that
secures his seryices may well be res
garded as fortunate.
The French say “it is the impossi
ble that happens.” This has proved
to be tlie case with the Mount Leb
anon Shakers. The whole scientific
world has been laboring to cure
dyspepsia, but every effort seemed
to meet with defeat. The suffering
from stomach troubles has become
almost universal. Multitudes have
no desire for food and that which
they do eat causes them pain and
distress. Sleepless nights are the
rule and not the exception, and
thonsancs of sufferers have become
discouraged
The Shakers of Mount Lebanon
recently came to the front with
their new Digestive Cordial, which
contains not only a food already di
gested, but it is a digester of food.
It promptly relieves nearly all
forms of indigestion. Ask your
druggists for one of their books.
Laxol, the new Castor' Oil, is be
ing used in hospitals. It is as sweet
as honey.

Do you know what Cologne Is? How it
is maueV The essential oil of fragnnt
flowers is obtained by thickly sticking
the Howers in fresh fat, which has been
rendered free from all tainf of rancidity,
and water, and after allowing them to re
main in the fat, spread on pane3 of glass
arranged la stacks oovered, for several
days. This operation is repeated-until the
fatfs saturated with oil. This essential
oil is then dissolved out of the fat by spe
cially rectified spirits. Fat, thus prepared
is called Pomade, Many essential oils,
used in perfumery of the cheaper kinds,
are obtained by direct distillation of the

OUR CITY GOVERNMENT.
Editors Union Recorder:
In the language of another, “where
are we at?” A question much easier
asked than answered, but most any
body will tell you we are in a had
lix and still drifting. What is the
remedy? No one ventures or dares
answer that question. The great
und all absorbing question is to nom
inate and haye some one to vote for,
regardless of their capacity and
views »-bout what is to the best-in
terest of the city. All concede that
there must be a tuore economical
goyernment, or financial ruin will be
the doom of the city, hut no one for
fear of hurting his own individual
business, or some other cause, will
dare suggest where economy and
retrenchment in the city’s govern
ment must start. Tins state of af
fairs is a sad commentary upon a free
and independent people. Let re
trenchment start by cutting off one-
half of the present salary of the
Mayor; have only two marshals
where you now have four; abolish
the office of City attorney, abso
lutely; cut off one-half the expense
of tlie water works, and the same
for the electric lights. These items
alone will reduce the city’s expenses
about four thousand and eight hun-
dred dollars, end doubtless there
are other expenses that a wise and
judicious city government could cut
oil and relieve this tax ridden people
of a burden that is almost unbear
able. And -who would be hurt
thereby? Only a few individuals.
If these or some other vigorous re
trenching measures are not adopted
by the future city government this
city will of necessity have to go
into the hands of a receiver. An
other frightful and alarming feature
that now stares us in tlie face is to
see such men as Barrett, McMillan,
Hall, Conn, Whelan, Horne and
Smith declining to serve the city as
Mayor and Aldermen Why is this?
evidently something lias been going
wrong m the past that these good
men should nov* approach the task
of righting matters with fear and
trembling. Tlie committee of twenty-
live should wake up and not sleep
or rest without stirring tlie town
from center to circumference in the
interest of good government, econ
omy ami retrenchment. The peo
ple look to, bliI expect that com
mittee to accomplish that object for
them, it is disgusting in the utmost
degree to see individuals put on airs
and live beyond their means, it is
eminently more disgusting to see a
little municipal corporation do so,
for the reason that it injures and
hurts a great many people and ben
efits but few.
