all the importance of purchasing the

The Episcopal convention in session
in Savannah last week adopted the
tollowing report on the establishment
of a Church Hall in this city. We
copy from the proceedings of the con
vention as published in the Savannah
News;
“Mr. W. II. Trezevant, secretary of
the committee in the Weston bequest,
presented a long report, favoring the
establishment ol a church hall at Mil-
lcdgeville ns a memorial to Bishop
Elliott. It is desired to make provision
for the hoard and lodging ol from 20
to 30 girls, whose education will be
received in tlie Georgia Normal and
Industrial School, where there is a full
corps of competent teachers in all the
departments, ample apparatus, etc
Each year finds an increased number
of church girls in attendance, whom
to bring fogeiher in family life, with
refined surroundings and Christian in
fluences, is the object of the venture.
A house mother is to he put in charge
ot 1 lie hall, with the priest in charge
of St. Stephen’s Church at Milledge-
ville, as ex-officio chaplain. The work
of the house would he done chiefly by
the girls and the expenses to them
would be small, $12 50 to $15 00 a
month.
The president of the Normal and
Industrial School has assured the com
mittee ol his hearty co-operation to
make the church hall plan a success.
About $020 will be required for furn
ishing the hall, and a suitable building
can he bought for $2,500 to $3,000, or
rented lor $25.00 a month. The in
come from the fund held by the trus
tees amounts to about $290 per annum,
in addition to which there would be the
money received from those accommo
dated at the hall. The selection ot a
suitable house mother would rest with
the bishop. It was recommended that
the committee be continued with the
bishop as chairman to make further in
vestigations and take such further steps
as may be possible to secure the object
desired. The report was adopted. The
Woman’s Auxiliary will endeavor to
raise $900 for furnishing the hall.

Those people
who failed to hear
Betsy Hamilton
last Friday night missed a rare treat.
The character sketches and imperson
ations of this gifted Southern woman
were powerfully realistic. She por
trays the quaint side of plantation life
In the old days with a humor and
picturesqueness that is irresistable.
She is a genius in her line of work and
takes rank with Thomas Nelson Page
and "Uncle Remus” in embalming the
rich and quaint dialect of the Georgia
Cracker, Her presence in any com
munity is hailed with pleasure by all
hut especially the young, to whom the
old time plantation scenes are a sealed
book. The audience Friday night tes
tified its pleasure by frequent laughter
and applause. Betsy Hamilton is sure
ot a cordial reception and a big house
whenever she decides to visit Milledge-
ville again. The music of the occa
sion was in charge of Miss Laura
Paine and lent an added charm to the
evening. The frequent applause, given
with a will to nearly every piece, was
the highest evidence that this feature
of the program was completely success
ful.
The Senior The present Senior
Entertainment Class will blaze
out a new way
by giving what they call “The Senior
Entertainment.” The affair will oc
cur at the Opera House on Friday
evening, June 10th, and will in matter
and execution be the exclusive work
of the class—with the barest sugges
tions from Mr. Reynolds. These pros
pective young graduates have arranged
a unique program, consisting of a
class poem, the class prophecy, two
taking pantomimes in costumes and
other interesting features, U° conclude
with M, Ilaughwont’s Dramitization
of Tennyson’s Princess. This beauti
ful play is a satire on the “new woman”
arid is in the poet’s best strain. The
Seniors will present the play in cos
tume. This is the last appearance of
these young artists before a Milledge-
ville audience and it goes without say
ing that each and singly, they will be
at their best. No more popular class
has gone out from the college in all its
history, a sufficient guarantee, apart
from the excellence of the proposed en
tertainment, and the Opera House
will be crowded in their honor.

Every one desiring to learn the true
art of ladies tailoring in all of its de

practical and thorough. It is the
latest and best; neither charts, ma

compare with Chase’s New French

is easily learned, rapid iri use, and in

n» Porto Rico B—RfiwL
A great deal has been published
about Admiral Sampson’s bombard
ment of San Juan, the capital of Porto
Rico, which is not true. The admiral
did not bombard the town of San Juan.'
He bombarded the forts which protect
the entrance to the harbor. Some of
the shell may have reached the town,
but no satisfactory evidence on that
point has yet been received. The
Spaniards say that little or no damage
was done to the town, and that if there
were any casualities the San Juan au
thorities have not been .intormed of
them. The captain of a French ship,
which was at San Juan at the time of
the bombardment, says that consider
able damage was done to the town,
and that a shell fell in a school house
and hurt a great many school children.
That story appears to be improbable
for the reason that at such an exciting
time children would not have been at
school. The bombardment of the
forts began very early in the morning.
It is absurd :o suppose that children
would haye assembled in school, if
deadly shells were being thrown into
the city.
Admiral Sampson had no intention
of bombarding the San Juan torts
when he appnSuched the harbor of that
town, and be would not have done so
if the forts hadn’t opened fire on one
of his ships which attempted to enter
the harbor to see whether or not the
Spanish squadron was there. The
Iowa was the ship fired upon, flic
Spaniards, having fired the first gun,
Admiral Sampson decided to give them
a specimen ot his gunnery, lit; prac
tically demolished the forts, but ho
did not attempt to take possession ol
Porto llico. fie did not want posses
sion of it, because, mainly, he hud no
troops with which to hold it. Under
the circumstances it he had taken it he
would have had a white elephant on
his hands.
It is announced that the Spanish
government intends to make it protest
to the other European Powers against
what it called the barbarous act of
Admiral Sampson. That government
says lie bad no right to bombard a town
without first giving twenty-four hours’
notice, of his intention to do so. As
already stated, the town of San Juan
was not bombarded. Only tbe torts
were attacked; but a state of war being
in existence between tbe United States
and Spain, no notice would have been
necessary even if Admiral Sampson
had decided *o bombard the town.
Admiral Sampson doesn’t appear to
have violated the law of nations in any
respect. He has done his work well
so far, and the American people believe
he will continue to do it to their entire
satisfaction.—Savannah News.
