the Democrats of Bibb county as rep

Hobson, the hero of Santiago har
bor. is an Alabama boy, The South
furnished the first sacrifice in heroic
Worth Bagley. Thus it will be seen
that the South is playing a gallant part
in the war with Spain.
A southerner and a soldier of the
Confederacy, now living in Iowa, says
an exchange, expressed the sentiment
ot the South very plainly and tersely
tlie other day when he said: “We
couldn’t lick the Yankees in 1801, and
d—d if we’ll let anyone else lick ’em
now.”
No greater heroes have yet distin
guished themselves than Lieut. Hobson
and his seven companions, who ran the
steamer Merrimac into the narrow
Santiago channel and, under a tevvillic
Spanish fire, sent her to the bottom to
become an obstruction to the Spaniards
in case they should attempt to come
out of the harbor.

not exist. At the end of six months I was
reduced to but a shadow of myself, and at
last my heart became affected and I was

Atlanta, Georgia, June 7. 1898.
The weather Conditions have not
materially changed during the past
week or two, and crops over most of
the State are needing rain. Cotton
lias suffered least from t he drouth and
is making steady though not rapid im
provement. It has been thoroughly
worked, and in some sections is bloom
ing and taking on squares. Corn is
suffering in some sections and needing
rain generally. Gardens and grass are
failing rapidly and in many localities
water is growing scarce. Wheat har
vest is over in most sections and the
crop is unusually large and good. All
crops are well worked and would
he very much benefited by good soak
ing rains.

When Admiral Dewey had sunk the
whole of Admiral Montejo’s fleet, lie at
once sent his compliments to the Span
iard and congratulated him upon the
bravery shown by himself and his men.
Subsequently when some* dispatches
from America feliciating Dewey upon
his victory fell into the hands ot Mon-
tejo, the leader at once forwarded them
to the American admiral with his com
pliments.
And so it was in the harbor of San
tiago de Cuba Cervera proved himself
a gentleman by acknowledging the ex
traordinary prowess ot Lieut. Hobson
and his little crew in sinking the Mer
rimac, and assured Admiral Sampson
that lie would treat them as prisoners
of war subject to exchange.
These civilities attest the high
character of warrior chiefs on both sides.
They give to war despite its horrors
the note ot civilization. The bravest
were ever the tenderest. The soldier
who honors the valor of his foe does
himsel* honor.
When the battle shall he over and
the doves of peace take the places of
the war eagle, both Montejo and Ceve-
ra will not he lacking in the respect ot
the American people whatever may be

An American lady, residing in Gu
antanamo, Cuba, has written a letter to
the Oneida Chapter, Daughters of the
American Revolution, speaking ot
some of the misdirected charities, and
stating that among tlie starving people
three things seem to be essential—con
densed milk, quinine pills and Scott’s
Emusion of Cod Liver Oil.
The request ol the Scott’s Emulsion
was emphasized by the following state
ment: -‘A boy to whom I gave some,
when actually on his last legs, had just
come in looking so-bright and happy
that, it has done him good. Oh! if 1 lmd
some money! It is terrible not to he
able to help the suffering.” This at
tracted the attention of the manufact
urers, who entered into correspondence
with the Cuban Relief Committee, and
found that Scott’s Emulsion was being
used in the cases of extreme starvation
where gelid food could not he properly
assimilated; Whereupon they made
arrangements for sending 500 bottles,
to he distributed free, in each rel’ef
ship that the committee should send
forward, and it is now being used in
Cuba with wonderful efficacy.
The estimable ladies ot Oneida
Chapter have been very much gratified
at the prompt response with which their
appeal was met. The example set will
probably he used effectively upon the
large manufacturers of quinine pills
and the condensed milk people.
There were several remarkable inci
dents in the present state primary. The
size ot Candler’s majority was a sur
prise even to his friends. For the first
time in the history ot the state where
there was more than one candidate
every vote in two counties was cast lor
one n an for governor. Colonel Can
dler received every vote that was polled
in Bihti and Gilmer. It was also the
first time that the Democrats in all the
counties expressed their choice for gov
ernor on the same day.
