THE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS
is duo not only to the originality and
simplicity of the Combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Svki'P
Co. only, und we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fig SyruP Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other par
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fig bVKi’P Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it docs not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of
the Company —

Bring
An El Caney Incident.
To the Editor of the Union Record
er:—Sir:—Here is a cutting from The
Sun, New York. Aug. 31, 1898, about
un incident at El Caney that Lieut.
Isaac Newell’s men have not forgot
ten. It is indeed the sort of thing
that wins battles. We all know how
the Lieutenant came by his nerve:
Camp Wikofi, Montauk Point, Aug.
3D.—What every officer of regulars
does, if he is or intends to become an
efficient factor on the field of battle, is
to attempt to win the confidence and
respect of his men. He endeavors to
become well acquainted with their per
sonal peculiarities, and lie studies how
to instil into them that spirit which,
having no English equivalent tor it,
we call esprit de corps. A Captain
usually has plenty of opportunity for
this, the other company officers not
quite so much .so, and it sometime hap
pens that a lieutenant finds himself
suddenly in command ot a company
which has been somewhat demoralized
by the loss of the man to whose leader
ship it has become accustomed. Then
is the time when he mdst act swiftly
and firmly if lie would avoid disaster.
Such a crisis came to Liyut. Newell,
Second Lieutenant of Company A,
Twenty-second Infantry, at El Caney,
and the choicest war reminiscence ot
liis men is how he came out ot it, The
firing had been sharp where they
stood, and early in th£ fight the Cap
tain and the First Lieutenant fell,
leaving the command to Lieut. Newell,
who is a young Southerner, llis men
were nervous and disheartened by their
losses, and their commander saw that
unless lie got them in hand soon there
would he some happenings that would
not look well in the reports. Some ot
his men were out ahead skirmishing,
and one ot them, a man who was popu
lar in the company, fell. The Lieuten
ant ordered his men forward to get the
wounded soldier. They stood still.
Again he ordered them, but they did
not obey. Turning to a Sergeunt
whom he implicitly trusted, Lieut.
Newell suid quietly:
“Sergeant, I want you to go out
with me to get that wounded man.”
“Yes, sir,” said the Sergeant, saint
irig.
The company stood and watched
them go forward. At the lirst glance
the Lieutenant saw that the soldier
could not live more than a few min
utes. He groaned out a request to he
taken hack to the lines to die.
“All right,” said the officer. “We’ll
take you in a minute. Just lie quiet,
and I’ll stay with you.”
In two minutes, during which time
Lieut. Newell and his Sergeant stood
there under fire, the soldier died. Then
the two went hack to the lines. Noth
ing was said between the company and
the officer, who had just proved him
self, hut the nervous wavering of the
line was over. The men stood like
rocks, and when the order came to ad
vance they went forward with a cheer.
In three minutes they had passed the
line that separates the tyro trom the
veteran,
“That ain’t in the hook, sir,” said
the soldier, who told this incident to
the writer; “hut, by God, that’s the
sort ot thing that wins battles!”
Very truly yours,
Lucius Lamar.
