Mr. Sidney Reid, who has been
agent of the Southern Express office
in this city for several years past, has
resigned his position and gone to La-
Grange, where he and Mrs. Reid have
taken charge ot a hotel. Mr. Reid
has by bis polite and faithful attention
to business made many friends in this
city and county, who regret his de
parture, and wish for him and Mrs,
Reid much happiness and success.
Mr. P. B. Merriwether, who has been
connected with the Co., as messenger
on the Georgia railroad, has succeeded
Mr. lteid, and taken charge of the of
fice. W T e join our citizens in extend
ing him a cordial welcome to our city.
Five Mules Killed by Lightning.
The stables at the Georgia State
Sanitarium were struck by lightning
last Thursday night, about 7:30 o’clock
and five tine mules were killed, two of
which had been driven by Mr. Hobby to
the delivery wagon tor a number of
years. The stables were set on fire,
and Mr. Steve Wright, who saw the
blaze, turned on the alarm and by
prompt action the fire was quickly ex
tinguished.

Will Play at the Macon Carnival.
Prof. D. N. Baldwin has signed a
contract with the Directors for the
Apol lo Silver Band to play at the ap
proaching carnival in Macon. The
band is to be be composed of thirty-
two pieces, and will play during the
entire carnival which will last four
daj*s.
The Apollo Silver Band is com
posed of young men, who take great
pride in perfecting themselves in mu
sic, and by hard practice the band lias
become one of the best in the State.
There will be no better band at the
carnival than the Apollo Silver Band.

The rising of the water 'in Fishing
creek and the Double branches did
much damage to the track ot the Mil
ledgeville and Asylum railroad.

Prof. O. M. Cone will be at the M.
G, M. and C. College today for the
purpose ot issuing certificates of ad
mission to the school which opens on
the following day. No pupil will he
allowed so register without a certificate.
The heavy rains of Wednesday and
Thursday nights caused several wash
outs on the Georgia railroad, between
this city and Camak. Since which
time the trains have not run regularly,
but the road will be repaired In a few
days, and the regular schedule will be
resumed.
The post-office lias been moved to
the store east of Messrs. Hall liea-
nor The new fixtures are very
u ret tv, and the boxes are unlocked by
combination instead of keys. Post
master Wilson lias made a successful
effort in giving our city one of the
best offices in the state.
A very large number of English
Sparrows roost in a large tree near the
male convalescent building at
Asylum. The heavy rainfall
Wednesday night washed them from
their perch, and Thursday morning the
‘.round was covered with them. Prob
ably a thousand of these birds perished
in the storm.
The long-continued wet weather has
produced a rank growth of weeds and
there is an odor of decaying vegetation
on our streets. Many cellars in the city
were filled with water during the heavy
rains last week. Every possible pre
caution should be used to remove any
cause for sickness. A free use of lime
and the burning of tar would, no doubt,
be good sanitary helps. It would be
well for the Board of Health to suggest
what should be done. Any recommend-
ations made by the board wifi be en
forced by the Mayor. In many sec
tions of the country fever is prevailing

A severe wind and rain storm swept
over tliis section of Georgia lust Wed
nesday night and Thursday.
Early in the night the wind began
to blow from the east, and rain soon
followed, continuing until it became a
regular gale. The streets of the city
were badly washed. Oconee river and
Fishing creek rose rapidly, and soon
covered the surrounding low land.
Reports from the county are that the

covered many acres of low-land corn.
The cotton was badly injured by the
wind and rain.

PROTRACTED SERVICES.
The protracted services at the Meth
odist church the past week were not
very largely attended, on account of
the heavy rains, but services have
been Jield twice a day, and in spite of
the small crowds much interest lias
been manifested.
Rev. K. M. Stanton preached with
great power Sunday morning and
evening to large congregations. In
the afternoon a prayermeeting was
held at the church lor the men, and
one at the parsonage by the ladies.
Dunns the present week services
will be held as follows:
9:30 a. m., preaching at the church;
3:30 p. m. man’s prayermeetmg at tbe
Methodist church; 4:00 p. m., prayer
meeting by the ladies in the basement
of the Presbyterian church, and at the
same time a prayermeeting will be
held*by the young ladies,and preaching
at the church at 7:30. Everybody is
invited to attend these services.
Mr. Stanton is an earnest and force
ful preacher, and lias the salvation ot
souls on his heart, and he pleads with
his congregation to turn to God in a
manner that carries conviction to the
hearts of his hearers. * The singing if
led by Mr. Farmer, and is very sweet
