Death of rfiu Winnie Davis.
The death of the beloved “Daughter
of the Confederacy” has caused pro
found sorrow throughout the South, and
tender expressions of love and sym
pathy have been sent to the stricken
mother, Mrs. Jefferson Davis.
Camp Doles U. C. V., through their
commander, T. F. Newell, sent the fol
lowing dispatch to Mrs.Davis, Monday
morning:
Headquarters Camp Doles No. 730
United Confederate Veterans, Milledge-
ville, Ga., Sept. I'd, 1898.—To Mrs.
V. Jefferson Davis, Narragansett Pier,

The shaft is of marble, but it did not

from far-off Vermont.
Commenting on this fact, the Bir

The South furnished the heroes and
the North the marble to commemorate
their bravery. Henry Grady once
wrote up a funeral, and called atten
tion to the fact that the collin was
made of Maine pine, the nails of Pitts
burg iron, and the cloth was from New
England looms—all that Georgia fur
nished was the corpse and the hole in
the ground. There is certainly no
need to send north for marble, when
the South abounds in marble of the
finest quality. The Washington mon
ument was erected of marble from the
different States, and when Alabama’s
block arrived the superintendent re
jected it, saying that it was Italian
marble; but it was from the marble
quarries ot Talladega.
It is the same old story. We have
a large class of people among us who
want the northern trademark on every
thing. When manufacturing indus
tries in the South send their goods to
market, many purchasers drop them
like hot potatoes when they learn that
they are home products, and straight

if not superior to the northern output,
we find Tennessee depending upon
Vermont for material used in a Con
federate monument.
It is about time for us to prove to
the outside world that we produce
something besides corpses and holes
in the ground, and that our home pro
ducts are in demand among our own
people. We talk about public spirit
and patriotism, but the best and most
profitable sentiment that we could
have would be a strong local pride that
would lead our people to always give
the preference to products when they
are equal in quality and price to the
goods offered by outside competitors.
There is no sectionalism in this. It
is simply taking care of our own inter
ests. In a word, it is business.
Now take the matter of engraving
Wedding Invitations, Visiting Cards,
fine Society and Business Stationery,
etc. Such work ought not to be sent
North as long as there is a thoroughly
equipped establishment in the South
for their production. J. P. Stevens &
Bro., the wellknown engravers and
jewelers, of Atlanta, have such a plant.
They duplicate Northern prices and
their samples show that they have
skilled artists and do the highest class
of work. They are endeavoring to
establish in the South an industry that
is giving employment to Southern peo
ple and is not only a great convenience,
on account of the greater promptness
with which they can execute orders,
hut they are building up a reputation
that contributes to our fame and de
monstrates that the South can and
does successfully compete with the
North in this line of artistic work.”

deliver work more promptly than any
other house in this country.
